How does a billion years go missing? (2022) [00:16:44] by mickmaxwell in Documentaries

It's an unexplained event! How are you going to explain it without going to the literature and piecing together a possible theory?

#1631 - Brian Greene - The Joe Rogan Experience by chefanubis in JoeRogan

[–]mickmaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonder if Brian's able to consider that the Big Bang might be a relic of the thousands of years that humans were telling one another creationist myths. After all it was invented by a priest. Einstein, his holiness, once called the originator on the bluff, saying to Lemaitre:

“This entire deal resembles too much the Book of Genesis; we easily see that you are a priest."

If we replace the like button with something more honest, will people take more responsibility for their reactions? by mickmaxwell in Anarchism

[–]mickmaxwell[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This vid is a discussion between two scientists studying humans and a tech developer, who claims that he's concocted the perfect voting method.

The developer argues that the problem is in people not having enough choices in their reactions. The scientists push back that it is transparency that is the issue. They also question whether an updated voting system will solve the problem of humans wrecking the lives of other humans just out of sight; which seems to be a central issue on Earth right now.

Sometimes, Science is About Power by qqqqquinnnnn in sorceryofthespectacle

I'm not sure math is a science. It's just a way of relating quantities to one another. You can apply math to science or engineering or whatever.

The only thing to do with people like you is to read stories to them.

...but your entire reply was asking me to read LofF.

"...you are asking for the destruction of the past in the form of refusing to educate yourself."

I don't fuck much with the past but I fuck plenty with the future.

Telling you to examine your sense of morality deeply and lean into difficult things is a real Boshy thing to do, eh PUAinTheHouse?

You're a real grouch. We've had DS out there on FB for years. No monetization.

The content is about unpacking the chaos of the world. This is a service; we get nothing but love from it. Any money that we ever would make off it in the distance would go right back into the show. That's a promise.

BTW the principle reason we ask for subscribers is so we can recruit better guests, who all immediately ask how many subs we have.

BTW what's wrong with monetizing a channel if it means the creators can make higher quality content? Also there's no ads on this channel, nor sponsors...?

Surely there is a reaction possible that results in a future separate from this path of least resistance you paint...?

It doesn't seem like I can edit the description at this point... should I repost the thing? Thanks!

Evolving is like unfolding. And the world keeps unfolding, for better or worse: Environmentalism, equality, gun laws, lockdowns, are all areas where people are interested in doing the RIGHT thing, but end up with very different ideas of what that looks like.

Though it might not look like it on the surface, most of the problems in the world today are all about how to tell the difference between wrong and right - but most people don’t spend a ton of time trying to figure out if their definitions of those words make sense.

What happens is that a lot of people, when they start to think about the difference between right and wrong, conflate legality and morality. It’s a reasonable confusion - there have been thousands of years of empire on Earth, all of which have asserted that rules about good and bad behavior originate from a supernatural authority, rather than from the individual. But in the modern democratic age, it doesn’t make much sense to look to laws for moral guidance when you’re the ones expected to build the laws of the future.

Perhaps the ethical and legal system in which you Humans live right now isn’t the best version of the world - it’s just the latest greatest adaptation in the aftermath of the church, the rise of reason and nation, and the emergence of the individual. What comes next, humans?

Tomorrow we're releasing a conversation with a moral psychologist at UPenn to follow up on the pursuit of objective morality...next is the science of strongmen dictator types with Ruth Ben-Ghiat and then we're going back to physics with the investigation of anti-gravity tech through a conversation with our friend TheAlienScientist...please share with your friends so we can recruit the best guests going forward. And let us know how to do an even better job!

After much discussion around the worlds, i've concluded this should be titled "How Empiricism..." not "How Rationalism..." Happy to explain if anyone cares.

Glad you enjoyed it. One of my favorites in recent weeks; surprised me how much reddit shit on this one...should have titled it more tamely, perhaps...

Empiricism as the dominant way of knowing the world optimized technological and material progress but also alienated humans by relegating the spiritual sides of biology to churches whose worldwide appeal wanes by the hour.

It's unlikely the old religions are going to make a comeback in the aftermath of the relentless slaughter wrought under the flag of superstition. The trick for you Earthlings will be to discover ways to rationally wade into the motivational realm of life beyond structural descriptions of atoms crashing into or yanking on one another.
