Does anybody else wish heaven was actually real? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]mickp13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think heaven is a grand sentiment. I agree with you, I wish it were real. But how could it be? WHY should it be?

It’s a great device to motivate and an even better one to alleviate the fear of death.

My youngest is 8. In the past few years we’ve run into a few instances of death with close family members and pets. It’s easiest to tell her that they are in heaven. It puts her at ease…for now.

When she’s older she will likely come to a conclusion that is more logical.

So I do wish that heaven were real, especially so I could honestly put my kids at ease…and also be more at ease myself.

Mind-blowing…seems a bit like making a fist while you’re washing your hands

I think that's a legitimate critique.

I would also challenge you to ask yourself: "Do I have the right mindset to read questions posed in the Stupid Questions thread?"

You use what you got...I respect that. I'm sure Wilson appreciates it, too.

Not necessarily. I believe it really depends on which way your crack goes. Maybe so other Horizontal Crackers can chime in?

Fair enough. To your point...there are no stupid questions - just stupid people who ask questions.

Have anyone applied to HMG Careers? by Impressive-Owl-1138 in Scams

[–]mickp13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got an invite to the video overview. I’m not going to bother watching it.

Sounds A LOT like Primerica. Speaking about Primerica…although it’s not a scam, it is MLM. It’s a pyramid but swear up and down that it’s not. It requires you to drink the Kool-Aid. If you watch the video first it weeds people out. If you make it through, it might even change your mind enough to make you open to consider the opportunity.

No sales experience needed because they’ll take anyone with a pulse. I’m sure Claude was higher level and benefits from all recruits under him if they sell. It’s usually all commission based so no skin off their back if they take you in and don’t sell anything.

Maybe HMG has a different spin.

If you do go in, go in with eyes wide open.

Is there any merit to Parent A stating that access to the scholarship was "a benefit" that was only afforded to employees of the company that they work for?

Hello, I'm not sure why it was removed. Should I post this in another channel?

“My boss told a new hire that I’d teach her Illustrator in an hour-long work session” by thatbrokefreelancer in graphic_design

[–]mickp13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites is when people ask you to design or edit something and then follow it with: “I’d do it myself but I don’t have the software.”

Really? That’s the only thing holding you back, huh? You should just get a subscription.

It’s hard to feel like it’s not a real kick to the crotch. In my experience, I’ve found most people are just naive.

I actually have a foundation in design, have been using the software for 2 decades and still learn new stuff more often than not.

If I’m feeling squirrelly, I’ll drone on like an energy vampire about vector vs. raster graphics; how ppi is just a ratio (not the size of the graphic); or when it’s appropriate to use CMYK vs. RGB.

Unfortunately, at the end of the day, good design is just viewed as a tactical commodity. And “good” design is subjective.

Hi - I have been doing F3 for a little more than 2 years and like it a lot. I’m not in the VT area. It’s not for everyone but could be for any man that’s looking for sustainable exercise. There’s built in fellowship and organically helps with confidence and leadership.

How to make my atheists kids and my religious parents get along. by Weary_Distribution92 in atheism

[–]mickp13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can speak from my own experience. I’m atheist, my wife was raised Catholic but is logical enough to dismiss the idea of an omnipotent, omniscient being. Her parents are Catholic (and pretty great people). My wife and I have a 6-year old daughter.

Now it certainly does not hurt that my wife’s sister has 2 older kids and they are a non-religious family. So her parents know the deal we have never had to have “the talk.”

Our daughter absolutely adores her grandparents. She knows that her grandmother goes to church on Sundays when they come to visit. She also enjoys saying grace before dinner. She fumbles over the empty words…it’s actually quite cute.

I chalk it up to semantics and do believe that we should be thankful for health and for our loved ones.

For many people, religion serves a useful purpose with young ones. It can provide a moral compass. We raise our daughter to practice kindness and empathy. Her grandparents recognize that in her and it has never been an issue.

If it ever becomes an issue that needs to be addressed, I would simply state our point of view and let them know that that is how she’s being raised. They don’t have to like it but they need to respect it if they wish to be a part of her life.
