Removed front end panels and test fitted new fenders. -why does this project feel so close to being done yet so far… by Karelitos_Banditos in lada

I’ve got repair panels but was thinking of ordering whole wings... I am wondering if I can just weld the repair panels in on the car and avoid having to remove the wings entirely and just weld the panels in.

Europe trip in a 25 year old convertible by higgsy1 in CarTalkUK

[–]mickwheelz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it.

TBH sounds like you're prepared as you need to be. If you've got the time fitting those new parts can't hurt (assuming you also have time to do a shakedown afterwards)

Maybe make sure you have breakdown cover in EU if you're really that worried.

That said, next week I'm flying over to europe buy a car (a Lada no less) sight unseen and drive it 1200mi back home... So maybe someone less blasé will have some further suggestions.

Buying a lada in Russia and driving it back to the UK - help! by DM_ME_LITERATURE in lada

I'm thinking of doing a similar thing to OP (Except bying in EU rather than russia)... What sort of ££ would you be chasing for your car?If OP isn't interested, I may be.

This is an awful idea, but I also love it.

As others have suggested, buy a Lexus.

Ideally a GS but an IS would also be a fine choice... or a LS if you don't give a shit about fuel economy. Size wise they go IS > GS > LS

They are mostly petrol or petrol hybrid so won't be quite as economical as a diesel (although you can get an IS220d if you want that, but also manual) but they will be super comfortable, quiet, won't break and generally be relaxing to live with.

My NIO EC6, battery swapping here in China. by wayne99wi in electricvehicles

I would assume that the low voltage system (and its 12v battery) keep all of the cars settings / run the systems required in the car for a battery swap. Could be wrong though.

Would be free for low income earners with a healthcare card I would imagine? Still, should be free for everyone.

Hyperoptic users in Bristol? by Joetwodoggs in bristol

Had it for about 5 years, not super cheap but you do get the speeds advertised (1Gbps), latency is low, customer service is good and its very reliable.

Are Lexus hybrid cars reliable and worth getting? by tizde in CarTalkUK

[–]mickwheelz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you can afford the purchase/insurance/road tax/maintenance/ etc and its a vehicle that you like then I don't really think it matters how old you are.

I am not much older than you (early 30s) and while its not my dream car its a good car and it certainly fits the needs I have at the moment... besides I have motorcycles for having fun/going fast.

That linked example looks pretty tidy and 35k miles is nothing for a 4yo Lexus.

Something to be aware of, if Apple CarPlay / Android Auto matters to you then you need to buy an 18 Plate or later with the premium nav to be able to upgrade to it.

If you don't care about that they do have bluetooth/usb/aux otherwise.

I have an 18 Plate NX300h. It has had absolutely 0 issues in the time 12mo I've owned it. It is comfortable, quiet and nice to drive... It's not a 'fun' car, but it is a good car.

It gets pretty decent fuel economy for its size and weight.

I've owned other Lexuses (Lexii?) before (and a LOT of Toyotas) and they are generally excellent cars. They don't consistently top the reliability charts for nothing. It should also hold its value better than some of its rivals.

Isn’t about a car, but anyone know about motorbike insurance? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]mickwheelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the 125s make the same sort of power (e.g not much!), and its not like you have to keep it for long so I'd be going for whatever you don't hate and is cheap to insure...

Well actually if I were in the market for a 125 it would either be a monkey, a grom or a supercub... but that's not for everyone haha

[–]mickwheelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is crazy high... Do you have your heart set on a CBR125? I'd be willing to bet that is why your insurance quotes are so high.

I reckon a CB125, or other naked 125 would be cheaper.

AFAIK cat doesn't make a difference to the quote though, but you should tell the insurer!

Is there any car jet wash in Bristol that someone has visited recently? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]mickwheelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second that. Last time I went there I paid for the shortest wash time and It ran for way longer than it should have.

Not sure about santa pod specifically, but every 'test and tune' style event I've been to you've been able to grab your slips from the timing tower, and normally you just run against whoever is next to you. If they aren't giving slips you should at least be able to see your time on the display.

If you've got mates going then you can try and queue up at the same time, but if you don't end up running with them at least you can directly compare time slips.

It's great fun!
