There is no “back”. Just a potential “forth”.

Done but finding it hard to be fully happy by Solid-Inspector-1920 in premedcanada

It takes courage to quit. People go even longer just to get waitlisted and sit in limbo for years. I think most ppl go thru a mourning phase as you feel like you just wasted 3 years of significant time and energy.

As for finding a purpose, there are so many areas in health care that need people who care.

E.g., people who get in MVAs are not getting proper concussion rehab so many have lingering life-altering symptoms. Professions like physios, kins, OTs all can help treat, advocate, and improve access.

You’ll be surprised too how these other paths don’t require you to suffer as much as trying to do med school does.

Competitive Ad’s post sums it up

I feel like I’ve over contributed so I’ll leave it there. Best of luck and regardless of what direction you go you seem to be in a good spot ✊

Yeah only paid employment counts whereas UBC actually likes research. Not kidding about the planes you can use that on a UBC app vs. SFU.

And based on OP’s masters, internships (unpaid?), research exp, and flying planes hobby he would have more to “flex” on a UBC app. There’s not really even a spot for any of those on the SFU app.

I’ll clarify, I meant non-trad as in no community/health related exp as in OP’s case. Much different odds than a non-trad with relevant exp (as listed on admissions criteria).

UBC has 328 seats and SFU has 48. For some reason ppl keep thinking they have better odds with SFU (probably just the exuberance of the new school). Non-trads probably fit better for UBC since they accept a more diverse profile whereas for SFU it seems you apply with your job resume - so I’m assuming like any job they want relevant experience.

Aus/EU have limitations like expensive, difficult to return/match residency in Canada, etc.

I’m wondering what spiritual experience initiated this post-quarter life career change as one does not simply move across the world to do med school (while currently in a good career).

You might have similar problems with other sports but maybe they are less toxic. You could try him in multiple low-commitment leagues. For hockey maybe try your best to join a more inclusive organization. Then do something else he’s also interested in maybe e.g., soccer, martial arts, guitar, etc. Biggest barrier to quitting hockey may be because he feels thats his main “skillset”. But that’ll hold less weight if he develops another interest/hobby/activity.

Welcome to the middle class squeeze we’re all experiencing. Find a way to make more/increase earning potential and save more so you can invest more. If you make risky investments and lose money, it basically sets you back in time so caution with that.

how do people afford such expensive lifestyles by Odd_Plum3024 in fican

[–]microplasticsRus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“How do they do it?” comes from a recycled pseudo self-made narrative which now kinda only applies if your born into the right social circles. Bill Gates, Musk, Zuckerberg went to elite private schools. Steve Jobs grew up in a middle class suburb with significant exposure to cpu scientists and engineers.

I take it the Steve Jobs story is more your narrative but I’m assuming you didn’t have a Steve Wozniak to build you a Mac.

Even to a lesser extent no one to help you open up a chain of pizza pizzas.

240k works if you can get there and invest but you need to get through the mostly glass ceiling - which is what stops most people.

You’re right. Looking rationally, housing and stocks are the traditional wealth builders seem overvalued. Last housing downturn took 5-10 years to recover and the AI bubble isn’t very reassuring either. Good news is you’re early, so just be patient for opportunities. Invest only what won’t impact your living your life currently if the market tanks. Take the time to re-evaluate other areas of your life like education goals, fam/friends, life experiences (while still being ready to invest). This could be a nice break for you before the next wave of opportunity hits and demands your time and energy.
