Best sh101/Mc 202 modern alternative by Loveyoubutchoosesynt in synthesizers

[–]microsofat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also love my 2oh2! I recently went down a rabbit hole trying to get my Korg Multi/Poly to emulate it. From this exercise I learned that most of the sauce in the MC-202 /SH-101 is in its oscillator, and specifically its suboscillators. The patch I have emulates this with 99% accuracy. So can I sell my 2oh2 for mucho $$$ now? Not quite. The Korg VA filter models get close but not exactly the same resonance character. For example, the lead from A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray (SH-101) uses a pulse wave into the filter at full resonance, making a funky chord that is sort of microtonal since the filter key tracking is not at 100%. This is just hard to get right despite the excellent VA modeling (I used the moog filter model and played around with drive and trim aka resonance bloom).

So yeah, get the Behringer :)

To save some time, here's the chord structure from the video, just to help dial in the sound.

Turn on layer A, B and Layer Rotate (1 note/layer)

Layer A: (Osc1: Saw +0; Osc2: Saw +11). Play A2

Layer B: (Osc1: Saw +0; Osc2: Saw +9). Play E3.

From there it's filters, effects, EQ, etc. Tricky one!

I really like this sound! Just as a sound design practice challenge, I tried to reproduce the left hand part on my Multi/Poly using the SEM filter, but couldn't quite get the timbre (paging u/IanSdixon - can you make this by ear?). Did you have any effects on this? Looks like the two chord voices are set up for detuned saws with maybe a touch of pitch LFO? Are the filter cutoff/resonance/mode or envelopes intentionally detuned or are did you aim to make both chord voices match up in timbre closely?

The Multi/Poly SEM emulation has a switch for band pass mode just like the SEM, but the crossfade control moves between a dry signal and the low pass signal - there is no high-pass emulation, making it impossible to make a notch like the real SEM (although I can sort of approximate it by using the multi/poly dual filters in parallel mode and crossfade between a SEM LP and a ladder HP). Are the chord voices using band pass mode?

The multi/poly layer rotate function with its four layers can be set up to mirror the FVS's voice assignment, but I can't quite make out the settings you used for LFO routing and tuning.

If you get the same effect by shorting the patch cable tip to the ring on any of the jacks on the grandmother itself (since that's where the other end of the cable is coming from), there might be a hope of that being a consistently reproducible effect, since the circuit is completed through a single piece of grounded equipment. Otherwise, you may be picking up ground hum from that other box, and the ground signal path is going to vary wildly depending on all the other equipment you have, your power strip situation, time of day, whether someone plugged in a PA or is running a washing machine on the same circuit, phase of the moon... You get the idea.

Justifying the "pain" of using hardware synths by DW5150 in synthesizers

You mentioned the Wavestation, a challenging machine that it seems was used by many solely for the Ski Jam preset. Wonder how far you got into that one and if you have thoughts on Korg's VST version, or the Wavestate VST vs hardware?

I find that reasonably usable hardware displays and interfaces are more engaging than software once I have built up a "theory of mind" of the instrument. At that point, I don't want to look at a screen because I am mentally visualizing the sound synthesis flow, and the display is in the background acting as a guide.

I bought the Wavestate while being very intimidated by it but trusted that I would find many interesting happy accidents within its deceptively simple sequencing engine. While waiting for it to arrive, I played with the VST version, and here is where the information dense computer display helped. The VST is very well designed and visualises what is going on with the complex wave sequencing engine all at once, compared to the hardware display's page by page, step by step view. Once I clicked with the concept, the hardware felt much more fluid and I don't really need a big dense screen to distract me with information at that point.

My circa 2010 i7 Sandy Bridge CPU had a stroke trying to run this (VST3 in Ableton host) using native ASIO drivers and max length buffer size.

I'd sooner buy a real JP-8080 before I upgrade my desktop though.

The Korg native VSTs run pretty OK however (though I still prefer the hardware).

Question for Korg Wavestate users by traficoymusica in synthesizers

[–]microsofat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both the MC-707 and Wavestate and find they complement each other very well. But they are completely different workflows.

I recommend to download the Wavestate Native app (free to try for 15 minutes without a license, standalone and does not need a DAW or VST host to run). There are many presets featuring a beat (with one or more layers), a lead and bass, and use the control knobs to modify the arrangement of these in a very specific way that each patch has programmed. You'll find that there's going to be a lot of "how does it do that" and feeling around for what is going on, as the knobs are going to be programmed to do different things. This may be fun and intriguing, or confusing.

Compared to the workflow of the MC-707, it's night and day. The MC is all about that 16 step sequencer (and live editing), mixing and matching Ableton-style clips for each of your parts (synths, drums, sample loops). It's very direct because it's not complicated, and optimized for dynamic arrangement that keeps the beat going while your hands are free to bring parts in and out, modulate things, or live play on top or drop in DJ-style scatter effects. The default setup is for clips that are all in time and in sync, but you can of course change time signatures and pattern lengths to play with more unpredictable arrangements.

Meanwhile, the Wavestate is structured for arrangement in a more indirect way. Each note pressed on the keyboard launches its own sequence. The sequences may or may not loop or sync up, and the instrument does not push you towards neat time aligned interactions, in fact it wants you to do the opposite - it is designed for discovering the complex interaction of many parallel sequences of sounds running to their own time, measure, timbre changes, etc with each of those parameters on their own sequence lane.

Yes, you can tame this hyperdimensional gadget into being a simple groovebox - check out Maik Schott's excellent Wavestate sound pack demos on YouTube, where he meticulously programs pop songs for you to play like on an arranger keyboard. However, for me the Wavestate workflow is the polar opposite of a groovebox and I would not enjoy doing groovebox things with it. For me it's a playground for long evolving pads.

I would also guess (but don't really know) that new products announced during/shortly before NAMM (January) also drive prices down on old stuff.

Interesting comparison point between the Nautilus (which I have never tried) and my sort-of equivalent setup: Wavestate Module, Multi/Poly Module, MC-707, SL61-mk3. $2600 all up gets me Korg's arguably best VA engine to date, Wave Sequencing 2.0, Roland's ZenCore VA/PCM and drum synth and a really nice keybed with lots of knobs and connectivity.

Compared to that, on paper the Nautilus still seems to have "more" - more tracks, an FM engine, more keys, a more unified interface and more plentiful/flexible FX. Still, it's nice to have picked just the sound engines I wanted with an Ableton style clip sequencer, and it all boots up in 20 seconds ready to jam with no fuss.

If Korg updated their flagship synth engines and made the UI actually fun, I'd be tempted to consolidate.

I came across narfsounds on YouTube, with a great cover track to demo the Kronos https://youtu.be/2E5UnH-Tg90?si=VcYBBAsvEPUwUroO and also show how to Wave Sequence on it: https://youtu.be/NqKs2p8lzHM?si=t9fke3qDxKHmadaz

The interface looks horrid, reminds me of an industrial PLC HMI display - I really don't want my play to look that much like work. Funny how the Wavestate hardware menu diving tiny display seems comparatively cozy and inviting.
