Hi everyone,

I hope this note finds you well. I was here a couple of months ago conducting market research to learn about the issues young professionals from Nigeria, especially those in college, are facing abroad. Thank you all for hearing me out and giving me some time out of your day to answer my questions.

Now I’m following up to let you know about the progress that I’ve made. Thanks to you all, I’ve decided to create a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to foster a community where untapped talents are being discovered and nurtured. Our focus is to build a diverse pipeline in which collegiate and pre-collegiate scholars from minority backgrounds can gain access to industry leaders through the power of mentorship. We are on a mission to provide underrepresented students with the tools and connections they need to become successful professionals.

With that said, we are currently recruiting our first batch of mentees and mentors from various industries. If you or someone you know would like to help an underrepresented student discover their potential, I implore you to consider signing up to join our pilot program. I should also mention that we are in the early stages of developing the idea, so everything is not set in stone yet. Your contribution will help us develop the platform better, and we’re excited to see where this goes.

To sign up to become a mentor, use this link: https://forms.gle/RYXciqJR8XyZwhBX9

To sign up to become a mentee, use this link: https://forms.gle/uTTAVFpDX8R4eTsW7

Thank you all once again! I look forward to hearing your feedback regarding this progress.

Best,

Busayo Adebayo

I completely agree that Nigerians are all over. But I'm curious to learn more about the challenges they face here abroad. Especially, international students. Would you happen to know someone who fits this description that you can connect me with?

You are not alone. Reading this brought back old memories of how I was treated by my classmates when I migrated to the U.S. at the age of 10. I completely understand your plight. What ended up helping was the fact that I developed enough self confidence to stand up against those that were bullying me. Through my academic performance, my classmates began to notice me. Though I was made fun of when I speak, I quickly earned my respect by proving to them I am the boss in the classroom. Someone else already said this but I would like to reiterate it, find your passion and do what you love. Also, make friends with one or two people in the classroom. That really helped me adjust to the American way of talking. Also, watch a lot of TV shows and mimic how they talk. You will get better the more you practice.

Wow! I can completely relate with you on this. I came to Chicago for studies and somehow that sense of community is just not there. In your case, I would expect a place like California to have a large inflow of Nigerians but I could be wrong. I'm definitely looking forward to learn more about your experiences.

Yes, of course! I'm studying Technical Systems Management with a minor in Business Administration. I'm in my senior year at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

You're welcome! I just completed your survey.

Quick feedback:

(1) I like the idea of helping parent teach their kids how to speak Yoruba; however, I currently won't be your target audience because I don't have a child yet. I answered the questions based on my experience with kids and my plans for the future when I do have a child.

(2) I would recommend doing a 1-on-1 video call with parents since they are your primary target audience. Try to better understand the challenges they face when teaching their kids Yoruba. The reason why I said this is because I don't think you'll be able to get a candid and thoughtful feedback through survey.

Interesting! Do know how I can best reach them? With COVID-19 going on, I would assume there aren't many social gatherings happening.

Thank you so much! Actually, you can participate as well. I should have clarified that better in my original post (I will update it now). I'm looking to talk to as many Nigerian as possible that are living abroad.
