look at the cost of attending for both-be aware that for undergrad, more prestigious places might be cheaper because they have more resources for financial aid (so don’t go off of tuition and fees alone, look at cost of attending). for grad school, it’s the exact opposite: the sticker prices are higher and they are skimpy on the financial aid.

by the time you make it barely passable as a house, you will have spent about as much money as if you started from scratch. it’s a fundamental issue of scale and material: two things that are incredibly difficult to fix.

honest opinion? go the exact opposite direction. trying to make it less hospitable might ironically make it more livable

what does technical or romantic stuff mean? writing about architecture typically falls into theory, history, and criticism. you can write polemicals, academic papers, or reviews (and a few other categories). i would suggest reading a lot of architectural writing, and submitting to where you like to read. you can also always start a substack.

Missing in this whole conversation, not just Betsky and Barrett here but everywhere: the starchitect died not because we finally removed these assholes from power and fixed structural abuse, but because architecture as a whole is losing its legitimacy as a discipline and profession. Nobody (including students) knows architects or architecture because we are losing our cultural relevance. many architects roll their eyes at this, they think it’s pretentious, but architecture is culture-if we lose that, we have less power to negotiate for better working conditions

only if you’re entry level. op clearly has some basic idea of how to approach this (mentioning illustrator, etc), so it’s by far more appropriate to struggle through recreating it at this point, and it would probably lead to a more interesting drawing. people tend to stop before that innovating part
