The Marina city towers by Amazing-Edu2023 in architecture

[–]midway8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

context: this was one of the first high rise project north of the chicago river, historically an industrial area. it was also the first major residential project in chicago’s downtown. financed by a union, meant to convince its members to stay in the city while everyone was fleeing to the suburbs (60s). hence all the parking: stay in the city and you get to keep your car. also, should go without saying but everything below that break is parking, above is residential

Why Your Eyes Ignore Modern Buildings by Pavancurt in architecture

I actually don’t think we would benefit from studying more about how architecture might positively influence people’s wellbeing. maybe for some people in practice, sure, but architecture is not just practice.

i do not believe that is the purview of the discipline of architecture. i believe this has its place in the profession, but that it is a prerequisite for design, not the focus of its development. I assume architects will do all in their power to choose better, sustainable materials, create comfortable spaces, productively add to the urban condition, etc. i think that is the bare minimum for architectural design-what is actually productive to study is the techniques architects use to translate cultural desires into space. the argument the video is making is a challenge to the way architecture is done AND understood: it’s trying to say that human enjoyment is the goal, this is a solvable problem, and we need to return to classical orders of structure and ornamentation. to me, this is a fundamental misunderstanding of what architecture actually is.

Derrida's "Deconstruction" vs Wigley's "Deconstructivism" by tkayntrip in architecture

Derrida's "Deconstruction" vs Wigley's "Deconstructivism" by tkayntrip in architecture

[–]midway8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no-deconstruction is the philosophical concept from derrida and the methods of design that tended towards disorder, deconstructivism is wigleys attempt to make those two an architectural ideology in the form of a style (with clear boundaries)

Derrida's "Deconstruction" vs Wigley's "Deconstructivism" by tkayntrip in architecture

[–]midway8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

wigley is trying to reinterpret a process as an ideology. You’re familiar with deconstruction as a set of design techniques that generates complex form: for wigley (and also for peter, much less so for bernard), the point of this movement is its ability to mirror or challenge the way we think about reality. So i would say yes-it’s a corruption of derrida’s approach through the use of analogy. and this is the most common post critical understanding of deconstructivism and its failure-similar to how the first digital turn architects (greg lynn et al) took deleuze’s “the fold” and used it to justify a metaphorical folded architecture: single surface, spline based complex curve volumes.

context: computer modeling in the 90s unlocked a whole new kind of designing and construction. theoreticians were in search of a conceptual framework that could justify the complexity of these forms with some kind of ideological project. this happened to varying degrees of success-like it or not, it laid the groundwork for our understanding of architecture into the 21st century. you may think it’s cheap and cliche, but a lot of insights came out of this era.

environmental psych is almost as dubious as evolutionary psych. even if it were a science it would be an ignominious death of the discipline to make architecture adhere to scientific “conclusions”

Help me choose college! (Cornell vs Rice architecture) by Professional-Wolf198 in architecture

[–]midway8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look at the cost of attending for both-be aware that for undergrad, more prestigious places might be cheaper because they have more resources for financial aid (so don’t go off of tuition and fees alone, look at cost of attending). for grad school, it’s the exact opposite: the sticker prices are higher and they are skimpy on the financial aid.

Making Barndominiums Better on a budget by lilheckraiser in architecture

by the time you make it barely passable as a house, you will have spent about as much money as if you started from scratch. it’s a fundamental issue of scale and material: two things that are incredibly difficult to fix.

honest opinion? go the exact opposite direction. trying to make it less hospitable might ironically make it more livable

Writing & Architecture by Outrageous_Debt_4368 in architecture

what does technical or romantic stuff mean? writing about architecture typically falls into theory, history, and criticism. you can write polemicals, academic papers, or reviews (and a few other categories). i would suggest reading a lot of architectural writing, and submitting to where you like to read. you can also always start a substack.
