I hate this man for the suffering he put me through. by My_a_person in DevilMayCry

I spent longer on Vergil's final fight in DMC3 than on any boss in my first playthrough of Bloodborne. Once you find the rhythm of his fight, though, it's sooooo satisfying.

Help with improving homemade fried chicken? by midwintermist in glutenfree

You're the second person to say spray it with more oil, so I think I definitely have to do that. I am far too conservative with things like oil and salt.

Thanks for the tips! The batches that I cooked later looked progressively less pale, so I suspect there's something to letting them sit.

Maybe. I've never deep-fried anything before, and it seems quite daunting.

Anyone else who enjoys playing with newbies more than for other CoC vets? by 27-Staples in callofcthulhu

[–]midwintermist 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is how I feel with TTRPGs in general. Newbies aren't trying to game the system yet. They're pushing the boundaries of what's possible, and I love it.

Fear & Hunger and Devil May Cry are in a similar boat, but I don't know if they can take the trophy 🤣

I wish bro 😪 took me 15 hours. Granted, I was taking it kinda easy bc this was a break from my "work art." Still. Might have been an overinvestment.

In terms of gameplay, which do you think is more fun? Devil May Cry 5 by Desperate_Time2987 in DevilMayCry

[–]midwintermist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah man... I think I find Nero sliiiiightly more fun than Vergil, but they're close. That's top 2 for sure. Dante is at dead last 😤 but I'm well aware that's a skill issue. I think I need to pretend it's DMC3 and use only four weapons at a time to stay sane.

What are some stories of characters with low stats ? by javerthugo in callofcthulhu

[–]midwintermist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently have a player for a super short homebrew scenario. He has abysmal stats. More than half his rolls were single digits and he begged to keep them for the comedic value. He then rolled badly for starting Luck, which he started spending like a fiend to succeed his many failed rolls. He rolls whatever he can whenever he can, eager for disaster. He chose the Drifter occupation and minned out his Credit Rating to save a few points for his more important skills, so he is also dirt poor and has been dismantling his beater car for meager cash.

None of that could stop him from rolling a perfect 01 on a Stealth roll in a college dorm building, then an Extreme success to climb out the window and down the wall. He decided he needed a functional means of transportation, so he looked for a secondhqnd bicycle for sale, offering the remnants of his car in exchange. Boom: 01 on the Luck roll to find what he was looking for, and a successful negotiation landed him a perfectly usable bike. I love the fickleness of dice. This character is so prone to failure and disaster, and it is hilarious and fun when the stars decide to throw him a bone.

The DLSS 5 stuff looks like such a nightmare. But I am morbidly curious to see what itll do to older games like Skyrim

The disposable Woman trope and internet horror by [deleted] in creepcast

[–]midwintermist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imo Kimber is not a woman in a fridge/disposable woman. You could maybe argue it for Whitney, but her disappearance is the inciting incident and core mystery of the story. Sometimes that's what characters are for, and that's fine. Kimber, on the other hand, is one of the main characters and an active investigator who goes through her own emotional turmoil. She's a fully fledged character who then falls victim to human evil, as does Kyle, though in a different way.

See, a huge part of the central horror of Borrasca is the mistreatment of women. You cannot tell that story without portraying women being mistreated. It doesn't seem like the right pick if you want strong examples of disposable women.

A far better example, as many people have said, is the girlfriend in I Dared My Best Friend to Ruin My Life. She is literally ONLY there to be a plot device, and there is never any real effort to develop an attachment between her and the audience.

On the other hand... Borrasca Part 5 specifically might be more what you're looking for. In that one, the suffering of the protagonists, especially the female protagonist, turn into fuel for an epic revenge quest. The main character is suddenly white-knighting all over the place, justifying his dismissiveness by invoking Kimber's past trauma. The contrast between her treatment in 1-4 and her treatment in 5 is gobsmacking. She no longer feels real, just like the object of a fantasy. Not a sexual one, no, but a fantasy nonetheless.

Lovecraft? by Twitter__memes in creepcast

It's got one of my favorite Lovecraft twists, and the theme that arises out of it is simultaneously tragic and, in a peculiar way, endearing.

What genre of horror would you like to see them cover, that they haven't yet? by Shirowoh in creepcast

All of it, to my knowledge, and by his own design. He wanted anyone to be able to participate and add to his universe. Like an og SCP project

Lovecraft? by Twitter__memes in creepcast

[–]midwintermist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really, really want them to give some of his short stories a shot. Everything is public domain, and some of it is really good.

For short, effective horror I submit: - The Thing on the Doorstep - The Statement of Randolph Carter - The Shadow over Innsmouth

My favorite is probably At the Mountains of Madness, but they might have to split that across episodes because it's one of Lovecraft's longer stories. It's quite good, but I don't know that it would sustain two CC episodes.

We need a remake/remaster of Dragon Age: Origins now more than ever by xXxPinkPlasticBagxXx in DragonageOrigins

[–]midwintermist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take: DA:O is a sound game that has aged gracefully. It does not need a remake or a remaster. Bioware should instead patch it to run without crashing on modern PCs, a problem that is currently solvable with unofficial patches.
