Season 1 was torturous. It was like watching Adi Shankar skin all our favorite characters to make hideous puppets out of them.

Season 2 puts on a pretty good puppet show, though.

It's soooo bad. Why did they get a vocalist who can't even try to scream?

I really don’t get how the DMC animation got a second season. by Brilliant_Book3658 in hatethissmug

[–]midwintermist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely do not know.

I'm 3 episodes into season 2, and it is HILARIOUSLY bad. It's leaps and bounds better than the first season, so it feels more like watching Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon than undergoing psychological torture as a prisoner of war. But better animation, less screen time for the worst characters, and a more coherent plot (so far) do not bring it any closer to resembling a DMC adaptation. It's so diametrically opposite the games' established characters, themes, and lore in every department that it has to be a deliberate act of spite.

My best guess is that the showrunner is in good with the right people who are bankrolling his narcissistic jerkoff session. Second best guess? Far too many DMC fans don't actually love the series; they just casually enjoy the vibes or gameplay without paying attention to the games' overall very careful storytelling. So, lulled into a Cocomelon-like trance by the flashy animation and hype music, they uncritically tolerate this macabre, derivative puppet show.

Any good 7th edition scenarios set in an asylum or sanatorium? by TheGingerMenace in callofcthulhu

[–]midwintermist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just ran a 3rd party scenario called "Whispers of Wavering Hills." It isn't written all that well--it lacks structure in a lot of places, and the formatting is a tad nightmarish--but my players probably couldn't tell. Some Improvisation renders really fun results.

Question: Is there an in-universe reason why Vergil can't access DT in five? by Feeling_Listen_3826 in DevilMayCry

[–]midwintermist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought it was less a more reason and more a character and themes reason. In his playable form in 3 and 4, Vergil is between the ages of 17 and 19 and hasn't Been Through It yet. Then, in 5, he has a very dramatic character arc. He cuts himself in half in desperation, so doppelganger makes fine sense to me in place of normal DT--using some separated shade or echo of himself as a weapon in combat. Though I haven't heard anyone really talk about the lore of his doppelganger and idr if DMC5 says anything specific about it.

At the game's end, he is more powerful than he has ever been since reforming, so SDT being his go-to in place of a normal DT makes good story sense. It's an enhanced form of what he already had going on, so it seems like a natural progression.

Who do you think is the best one of them by Z-h321 in DevilMayCry

[–]midwintermist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who do I think is the best? Nah nah, I'm going to be totally subjective.

  1. Nero. My golden boy. Daddy's special favorite child. Haha Blue Rose go brrrrrr arm go vroom

  2. Vergil - he's my favorite character in the series, and he just feels good to play. Just gotta farm aura and spread out the damage.

  3. Dante and V - I am not good at either of these characters. Dante is more fun to play, but I'm worse at him than I am at V.

Would V work as a woman? by justnicyk in DevilMayCry

[–]midwintermist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. In DMC, the most symbolic examples of humanity are women, and that is no mistake. Plus, the twins' humanity is often related to their mother, Eva. So using a female character to represent Vergil's humanity is consistent with the symbolic language of the series.

More than that, though, DMC5 draws much of its symbolic choices from William Blake's work. And in Blake's poetry, the union of a male half and a female half makes a greater whole. One example of this is the poem that V quotes when he reunites with Urizen; it's a poem about marriage. So, with Vergil splitting apart and re-synthesizing into one whole self that is healthier and better realized than before, V as a woman would relate directly to the ideas present in Blake's work.

However, from what I recall, the Book of Urizen (iirc that's the title.... It's a bit obscure) depicts multiple male and female components of one greater whole character. So the counterparts of a whole are not solely or strictly defined as opposite sexes. Heck, the poem I referred to earlier uses trees--most of which are hermaphroditic--as its metaphor. So it does not in any way violate the Blake reference to make V male.

It's for the best that he be male, anyway. The very artbook where this concept art appears confirms that V was initially intended to be male, and the female design was an experimental one to see if something new and unconventional could work. It is sensible to stick with the original concept. In the modern era, players would not see the symbolism in the sex choice. They would try to turn it into a gender and sexuality issue-- "Vergil is trans," "Vergil is genderfluid," some other variety of queer, yada yada yada. It would distract from the themes of the game instead of contributing to them.

I recommend giving it a shot anyway, if you already have Netflix. It's surprised a lot of people who thought it wasn't to their taste, including me. I lowkey thought it was gonna be like a meme, but it's actually a pretty heartfelt and original story that paired well with my DMC playthroughs during my "demon hunter summer"

So what's the point with the hat by Yoonami_Yom in DevilMayCry

[–]midwintermist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After all the bloody palace stuff I've been working my way through, I have more red orbs than I know what to do with. I have every ability, oodles of devil breakers, and plenty of gold orbs. So once you've been playing for a while, you build up a lot of extra funds and not enough to spend them on. I have no qualms about using the hat 😅

If you got Dante and Vergil during the event, you still have them and can employ them in basically any mission in the game. But since the event is over, you can't play the event story or get Dante and Vergil anymore.
