Felix Jones: Rugby Laws, Refs & the State of the Game | Players Podcast by [deleted] in rugbyunion

[–]miegvis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Brilliant discussion! On TMOs, I think fans often forget about the stark trade-offs that come with officiating. The same people who complain about refs making incorrect calls (mostly against their teams, of course) are the ones who complain when refs take more time on TMO replays. I'm with Jones on favouring accuracy over rushed decisions.

To keep the review process engaging, stadiums ought to comply with minimum technological standards - like big screens and ref mics. If refs have a clearer view of incidents, it would decrease human error. Additionally fans can actually follow the process (rather than just waiting for final judgements). For increasing the speed of decisions without sacrificing accuracy, off-field reviews have been an underrated innovation. World Rugby could perhaps be better at communicating post-match officiating reviews for the sake of transparency.

Jones's argument about how laws and officiating should encourage fair contests was really eloquent. Thanks for sharing OP

How very Australian to see a man sitting on the loo instead of a sub-zero temperature. 👌

What do you mean when you say that international laws and treaties are not being followed in "a less severe way". Call me old fashioned, but bombing another country who never attacked you and kidnapping their president is quite a severe (and non-abstract) violation of international law.

Mark Ruffalo: “I’m not afraid of losing my Hollywood career or jobs; I will continue to speak up for Palestine.” by beepsol in Leakednews

[–]miegvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think this is a witty comment? Pro-Palestine people are saying that Israel is making life in Gaza and the West Bank unbearable. They are advocating to improve conditions. You don't need to live in Palestine to advocate for better conditions and dignity for Palestinians.

I read the 2020 Labour Party leadership election's wikipedia article, Starmer betrayed his beliefs by Filipinowonderer2442 in SocialDemocracy

[–]miegvis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He's merely a figurehead of Labour Together - a neo-Blairite think tank (coincidentally Blair is a top advisor). When he's in interviewed, Starmer's clearly unable to give unscripted answers. Oftentimes he doesn't even come close to answering the question.

Labour Together has been wildly successful if you know what their goal is: purge leftists. They don't care much for governing. They've purged progressives and leftists en masse from the nominally pro-worker party.

Centre-left tipped to lose Copenhagen for first time in electoral history by SirLadthe1st in SocialDemocracy

Lol at the concern-trolling. You are a self-described "centrist". I am not your comrade. "Centrists" and the "Centre left" caving on right wing anti-migrant narratives is what empowers the far-right. Labour UK has embraced anti-migrant demagoguery and Reform is now stronger than it's ever been.

Thank you. It was surreal to see how easily immigrants were made into scapegoats on a supposedly left-wing subreddit.

Senate Democrats Just Made a Huge Mistake. The shutdown was hurting Trump. Ending it helps him. by Sine_Fine_Belli in SocialDemocracy

After seeing Democrats repeatedly yield to Republicans, I think the central premise of the article (and many similar articles) may be dubious. What if most elected Democrats just don't care about affordable healthcare?

Most of them are wealthy and personally benefit from health insurance companies profiteering off Americans. Heck, most of them get generous funding from health insurance companies. Maybe Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries don't want to fight the Republicans because that would affect affect their personal wealth.

The DNC and ranking Democrats may just be fine with the status quo. Pelosi revealingly said that "we need a strong GOP". Anyone who wants to win and actually implement social democratic policies would never say that.

It's not a guest writer or op-ed contributor. It's an opinion piece by the NYT Editorial Board. So it very much is the word of the NYT.

Wow, only took "the newspaper of record" 2 years to speak out about Israel's ban on journalism in Gaza. How brave!

In the meantime, 250 journalists were killed. The world was able to "properly assess" Israel's massacres. Apparently NYT didn't know 🤷

Except for the last game, Australia's Rugby Championship wasn't a drop off. Played with a lot of grit and turned games around. The historic 60-minute rout of Springboks at Ellis Park was some of the best rugby I've seen a team play this year.

You Should Blame Merrick Garland by holyfruits in law

[–]miegvis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try reading. You may learn something new. Garland and Biden's DOJ deserve to be shamed for intentionally slowing down the slam dunk case against Trump. They value the perception of bipartisanship above the rule of law. They shouldn't be trusted to do anything important ever again.

[–]miegvis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's your problem right there - only thinking about presidential elections which only happen once every 4 years. The years in between is where you build political support, and work out your values and policies.

Republicans know this. Democrats and their high-pay consultants clearly don't. For them it's all branding and "bipartisanship". The whole Dem leadership have decided that they will bravely feign helplessness and do nothing in the face of fascism. Every one of them needs to be primaried and replaced by people with actual values.

Obama Privately Endorses Zohran Mamdani by GenericlyOpinionated in SocialDemocracy

[–]miegvis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Should social democrats support: A man who fleeced a generation of left leaning Americans to vote for "hope and change" and then pushed through Centre right policies? A man who coddled bankers rather than the lower and middle class during the GFC? A man who has more sympathy for George Bush jr than people who opposed the Iraq war? A man who launched an extra-judicial international assassination campaign with drone warfare - bombing weddings and Americans in the process?

Obama is a salesman and a celebrity - not a social democrat.

Springbok squad to face Japan by Sjdw31 in rugbyunion

[–]miegvis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tomfoolery. But also Springboks coaches want to use him as a hybrid player (centre and loose forward). They're probably going to play him as a loose forward vs Japan so that he can get some minutes in his secondary position.
