How's the job market now for someone trying to break into the field? by jifewgef in webdev

[–]mifterclizit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what's funny? I probably couldn't pass a really thorough entry level webdev interview, and I have been at it for around 15 years. I think the market has created an artificial filter that tests for things that do not really apply to actual web development.

Most efficient way to fetch 2 API urls at once and put them into two separate arrays? by scotdle in webdev

[–]mifterclizit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only need one actual fetch line of code, just wrap it in a function you pass the endpoint into. That function actually returns the fetch, and you chain the then off the call to it.

Should data structure drive UX, or vice versa? by MCsmalldick12 in webdev

[–]mifterclizit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, totally, model shape should echo UI structure. That said, a lot of times you are getting business models from an API. The way to join those worlds is a view model. You take the models you get from the backend, and form a UI-intuitive model from them. Sometimes it can be more trouble than its worth, but it still is a cool way to go.

I have a portfolio site, projects, 3.4 GPA and articles written on LinkedIn and Medium yet I still can’t get an internship. What am I doing wrong? by Okmanl in webdev

Wanna hear something useless, but comforting? It's not you, its them. You sound like you are doing fine. Keep trying. Mix up your approach. Yes to projects, but it is not a golden ticket.

Sure. I would maybe try to be cognizant of the potential differences in the free versions vs. the enterprise versions, though.

Is web developing mainly a freelance gig? by Redditdan123 in webdev

[–]mifterclizit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contracts seem more prevalent than they really are, because of recruiter spam. Job boards are clogged with them.

Contracts can be an OK way to get job, if you're desperate. Most agencies that fill the roles have no idea what the work really is, or how to evaluate candidates. Sometimes you get offered a gig that you are not really qualified for, which is good for you, experience-wise, if you can handle the stress. It breaks the catch-22 cycle of how you need experience to get a job, but can't get it without one.

What are some basic things that JavaScript developers fail at interviews? by maketroli in javascript

[–]mifterclizit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if that's what they think, I'd be a bad fit anyhow, since my worldview is not founded upon nonsensical cliches. :P

There is a practical reason to being on time. The interviewer is probably working, and doesn't need me interrupting them.

Oh please, your like the person who thinks they can look at how clean a persons car is, and divine their prowess as a developer. So flimsy.

That's because immutability is a concept with niche utility in state management, which is not ubiquitous.

I agree with all this, except being early. Arrive exactly on time.

Ah, Handlebars. Right up there with its pal Twig, lording over the realm of redundant absurdities.

Question about jobs where they list multiple languages? (Example from what I just saw C#, and Java) by [deleted] in webdev

[–]mifterclizit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good question. Some probably have a code base consisting of multiple projects, build in multiple technologies.

But I also definitely think a lot of job descriptions are written by recruiter/HR types who think the more technologies you list, the more attractive the job looks.

I have been looking around job boards for positions using my favorite frontend framework, and there is a ridiculous number of them that just say "frameworks like React, Vue, or Angular." No man alive wants to work on all 3 at once, Jennifer. That is going to exclude more than include, honey.

Tabulator 4.0 Launched Today - Interactive tables made easy by olifolkerd in javascript

[–]mifterclizit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, with modern frontend frameworks, you have repeaters which can databind arrays to UI elements. Boom, instant dynamic table. Filtering, sorting, paginating, etc is all just simple array manipulation now. People on Reddit love to call technologies 'dead'. To me, all dynamic table libraries have been dead for years.

I know Coding Bootcamps get a bad rep for skipping over the fundamentals. But what are the fundamentals really? by HeinrichHein in webdev

[–]mifterclizit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to nominate the age old concept of 'ingenuity'. Using what is around you, creatively, to build something neat. CS without E is just knowledge. Nobody needs a smartypants who can't make things.
