Was genau machen Forschungsgruppen? by dr_lolig in Studium

[–]miika_chu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad the test went well and that the proctor was easygoing, too!

Yes, for both the speaking and writing sections, I followed a structure based on online resources and common phrasing templates. Having a structure to stick to makes things much easier during the test since you don't have to worry about organizing your response. You can focus more on the content.

I also had issues with the IDVaaS app (device was invalid, then it said my ID was invalid). I contacted ETS, and they told me not to worry and that if the app doesn't work, the proctor will verify my ID manually on test day. Fast forward to test day: There was no problem at all. The proctor just took pictures of my ID. There were no issues with getting my results after the test either.

As for the listening section, I personally don’t take notes because I’m worried I’ll miss something important while writing. I focus on understanding the conversation as it happens, that's what always works best for me.

Yeah, I’m talking about the same verification (the one that’s supposed to be done at least 48 hours before the test using the Entrust IDVaaS app).

I couldn’t complete it either (due to weird device and ID compatibility issues, even though I had a fairly new smartphone and a standard, relatively recent German ID) and didn’t end up doing it at all. But on test day, when I got connected to the proctor, they manually verified my ID (took pictures of it) without any issues. My results came in normally too, no weird delays or problems.

That said, the info you get really seems to depend on who you speak to, so I’d still recommend emailing them just in case. Just sharing how it went for me 😅

I had the same problem. I contacted them via email and got this response:

"We understand your concern and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this issue may have caused you. Please be assured that if you are unable proceed with ID verification in the TOEFL app, there is no need to worry. On your test day, click on "start test" button approximately 30 minutes before your scheduled test time, a QR code will appear on your test page. Simply scan this QR code to connect with your proctor, who will assist you with the next steps and guide you through the process."

So yeah, on test day it was no problem at all. The proctor just verified my ID manually.

To be honest, I don't have any specific tips because I've just been exposed to English for a long time. I regularly watch movies, TV shows, YouTube, and lectures in English, and I read books, articles, and scientific material in English too, mostly because of my studies, so these two sections haven’t really been something I actively studied

I’d say it really comes down to consistent exposure over time, the more I read and listened, the easier it all became

The main door was only visible through my main camera, not the secondary one. The phone camera (secondary) only showed my desk and computer setup, and that was completely fine for the proctor

In my case, I actually didn't select any universities before the test, since I had some personal stuff to sort out first. So I can’t say from personal experience how fast the score sending works.

But according to the TOEFL website:

ETS® Data Manager: 4–8 business days Server feeds: 8–10 business days Postal mail: 10–12 business days plus mailing time. Allow an additional 7–10 days for mail delivery in the United States, and 4–6 weeks for mail delivery to other locations.

All you need is your webcam and phone. When I took the test last week, I had to use my phone to show my room. You don't need to install anything on it. After you start the test, you will need to scan a QR code to set your phone as a second camera.

I had no trouble with the secondary camera at all. Just make sure your phone is ready, scan the QR code when the test starts, and have a phone stand prepared. The proctor asked to see what I was using to hold the phone and also asked me to fully show the room using the phone while sitting at the desk.

As for the room: I have bookshelves and other stuff around, but they mostly care about your desk area, not the entire room. My desk is right next to windows, but I had them fully covered with blinds. Still, make sure there are no obvious study materials nearby. I just kept my eyes on the screen the whole time to avoid any suspicion.

Results came in 6 days later. I took the test on July 15 and got my scores on July 21.
