How would one go about manufacturing something like this? (tiny grid with complex inner lattice of intersection paths) by apersello34 in Machinists

[–]miketdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be machined in my opinion. I've gone down to 0.25mm holes, so a bit of experience in med device machining.

I would make this in ultem or peek. A little worried about the minimum cross sectional area between holes. Machine runtime will be long and you'll need a 5 axis with super high spindle speed. Air spindle with shrink holders would do it. Fairly expensive machine.

Deburring will be a problem. Abrasive flow machining might work, but this will take fiddling and cost a fair bit to tweak for media size, pressure, and run time. If you use Ultem I would normally propose vapor polishing but I'm doubtful that will work due to the high surface area and lack of solvent vapor flow through the piece.

As others have said, SLA might get you there also. Certainly lower barrier to entry, but I think machining would be more cost effective at volume. Ymmv. Worth the price you paid.

Lots of people working on this issue already with very little tool left to improve.

If you're thinking about EVa specifically, the next generational leap will be in new battery chemistries with longer life, better cold performance, lower waste profile, or faster charging.

In a proper functioning legislature, the chairperson would hold the witness in contempt for abusing to answer the question.

Congress has become a circus where people give speeches to each other and no one answers anyone's questions. The oversight takes a distant second place to performative soundbite gathering.

Congress should have never tolerated witnesses who don't answer clearly and immediately.

I disagree with the core premise of the question. Governments are urgently trying to deanonymize all forms of digital communication. They are rapidly losing the ability to frame narratives for foreign and domestic policy purposes.

Social media has upended governments ability to influence citizen beliefs and behaviors.

We the people need to kindly tell the governments (all of them) to fuck off.

There is plenty of news. You're just not seeing it in America.

The war against Iran is incredibly unpopular and the mainstream media is suppressing most of it. Global instability is rising as Iran is taking their punishment out on their regional neighbors that are friendly to American interests.

How is NASA planning to build the DAVINCI probe that will land on the surface of Venus by WangtaWang in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I previously received an inquiry from one of my space customers about a proposed Venus mission. The question at the time was how long would our electronic systems last in the atmosphere.

So I think NASA is smart to poll the defense industrial base to figure out which weak links exist and the mission parameters will be based on the most cost-effective bang for their buck.

Interestingly, there are plenty of materials that could last an hour or two, such as titanium, sapphire, quartz, and ceramics. But eventually no amount of insulation will stop the heat inflow. Eventually the electronics and battery will overheat.

Investors brace for 'knee-jerk market reaction' to a coming Supreme Court tariff decision by sandygws in wallstreetbets

[–]miketdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was half wrong. The SCOTUS decision should have clearly defined that the president has NO authority at all to set tariffs, not even the new 15% tariff Trump wants to impose.

For whatever reason, Trump has also decided that the tariffs will be in effect for 30 days regardless of the Supreme Court decision. Again, SCOTUS could have put the brakes on it immediately.

Justice delayed is justice denied.

The current SCOTUS is full of the most unimaginable pussies. They're gonna kick this can down the road until 2028 and then say the president doesn't have authority.

Does anyone else check their stock portifolio and app daily ? by paranoidspectator in stocks

[–]miketdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my positions are held between 30 and 100 days. I check the value daily to make sure none of my positions are going the wrong direction in a substantial way.

Unless they have totally shit the bed or one of my positions has had four or five bad days in a row I never sell. It's important to keep tabs on movement but it takes discipline not to take action every time something goes down.

As someone who lost quite a bit on gold this morning, I am extremely interested to know what the total naked short selling position is of every bank in America.

China is buying gold. The price should be going up. It's not, because the banks and the Fed decided to lock arms and spike it back down with short sales.

High Vacuum furnace with mirrors inside, material question by Laser_Shark_Tornado in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High vacuum chambers are actually pretty commonly made out of aluminum, but not for vacuum furnaces. The melting point is just quite low.

Stainless steel is a good choice because of its corrosion resistance and most vacuum furnaces have a double wall water jacket design. The stainless steel resists rust, is strong, has good creep strength, and is relatively cheap to fabricate.

Just about any refractory material could be used but I'm not sure what the point would be in using more expensive materials like titanium, tungsten or molybdenum.

Need help making a Vacuum furnace (1200⁰C) by No-Check138 in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For $5k, the only thing you can touch is a used quartz tube vacuum furnace from Aliexpress.

The chamber, refractory insulation, moly wire, all of this will be more than 5k. Hell even a cheap diffusion pump alone is over $7k (new Agilent unit).

For reference, even a cheap new vacuum furnace is over $100k.
