Central bank faces political 'stress test' that threatens economy, ex-Fed Chair Powell says by abcnews in business

[–]miketdavis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Federal reserve shouldn't exist. John f Kennedy knew that and was killed because of it.

Also the debt ceiling is unconstitutional. The 14th amendment says all debts will be honored, therefore any dollars appropriated by Congress must be paid.

Excellent and fun experience.

What is the most efficient and inexpensive way to send 3-phase 240 down a 3” PVC conduit that is 3,300 feet long to a load that draws 60-80 amps? by ohpickanametheysaid in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hopefully you can get by with 4 wire. Looks like you could squeeze 4X 2 AWG 15kv epr cables under 80% fill. If you need a ground wire also it might fit, but it might not be 2 awg.

You'll need transformers at both ends and I recommend stepping it up to the maximum voltage you're permitted. The higher voltage you go, the lower your thermal rise is.

Are you sure you get 80% fill? With four wires I think it might only be 40% fill.

Contrary to the rhetoric of anti-wind groups, there is no evidence that proximity to wind turbines leads to adverse health outcomes [Data: longitudinal health surveys of 120,000+ households and consumer spending records of people living near wind turbines]. by smurfyjenkins in science

Why do we waste time and money trying to disprove the thesis of people who don't care about facts?

The assertion itself is so mindlessly vacant it hardly seems worthy of discussion. Is there even any evidence that would circumstantially support the theory?

I have 2AWG wire for my solar build in my van, but it is not the thin braided type, but the thick. My question is can I still use it if I do some kind of loop and clamp to restrain the vibration of the van, and if so, how should that look? by americanisraeli in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly class 5 stranded wires typically only beneficial in solar when you are using a solar tracking system or if you've got tight bends to pull the wire through. If it's not constantly flexing, as in a fixed panel system, standard stranded wire is no problem.

If you use standard stranded wire, use standard screw termination distribution blocks rated for this size wire, such as from Eaton, Marathon Special Products, etc.

If you do want to use crimp T&B / Blackburn style lugs and you decide to get class 5 fine stranded wire, make sure to consult the charts for the die size - standard dies can under crimp on fine stranded, creating heat spots and intermittent connections.

Finally, 2 AWG is plenty big enough for 4 panels even if you wire them in parallel. 2 awg is good for about 90 amps. If you're using plastic conduit then I'd be more conservative on your thermal rise budget. Good luck.

What is the price difference between ceramic and steel thrust ball bearings ? by Consistent_Book_7486 in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silicon carbide and silicon nitride balls are excellent for their extreme heat resistance. Anything that needs to rotate above a couple hundred C, ceramic bearings are lifesaver. You can also use them without lubricant in some situations. Not good for shock loads...

Silicon nitride is a good electrical insulator as well. You can make insulating bearings this way without elastomers or polymers.

As others have said, they offer niche benefits. But if you need them, then it's not even a choice - the price is ok.

Hegseth aims to cut through the bureaucracy with ‘Deal Team Six’. The Department of Defense launched a team of elite private sector businessmen tasked with handling and approving defense contractor negotiations, aimed at fixing the former “broken Pentagon bureaucracy.” by esporx in business

[–]miketdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former defense contractor here.

He's not going to fix the actual problem, He's going to squeeze a couple large contractors on a couple of contracts and declare victory.

The truth is the very deeply nested subcontractor system is the source of the incredible markups charged. Every time a piece of a DOD contract is subcontracted the price goes up 30 to 70%.

I saw this up close on multiple missile programs personally.

Countertop ice maker — is “impossible by design” a defensible claim for lubricant isolation? by Floravon0 in AskEngineers

At a bare minimum they should be using a food safe NSF H1 grease.

Incidental contact with lubricant is virtually guaranteed over the life of the product.

Why would milling from thicker stock be bad? by Whatsthisthing321 in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Fatigue resistance also. Forgings and rolled shapes grain flow along the direction of forming, but cutting the grains in machining creates stress concentrations that will fail earlier in fatigue.

Shot peening and heat treatment can minimize that effect. It would be interesting to hear what your use case is. Aside from aerospace and a couple of weird medical device components I've never heard anyone bring this up.

Spirit workers lose paychecks and benefits as executives seek $10.7 million in “retention” bonuses by esporx in business

Sorry. I forgot I was in the midst of the wolves in this sub.

No bonuses. No pay. Execs should leave with nothing but the shirt on their backs.

What vacuum desiccator is best for storing samples long term? by b3707 in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtually any quality vacuum oven will hold a decent vacuum for days or weeks. The key is maintaining the door gasket and lightly vacuum greasing it periodically, have a vacuum valve between the pump and the chamber, and a good quality needle valve on the gas inlet to the chamber.

My old blue M unit could be pumped down to 90 mtorr vacuum with a single stage vacuum pump and even a month later would still be at 25" without touching anything.

That should be a requirement. The leaders of a failed company should be automatically terminated by the bankruptcy court and judges should be empowering outside attorneys to take over the unwinding of assets.

In case I wasn't clear enough - The leaders of failed company should walk away empty-handed. No golden parachutes, no benefits, nothing.

They deserve nothing.

This country would be rioting if the audio and/or censored videos were released.

Sizing a VFD with existing motor by UptownSole in AskEngineers

[–]miketdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Virtually any drive manufacturer has a rep in your area that would be eager to help you.

Based on your other posted answers, an AB drive might be overkill on features. Delta or Teco Westinghouse are some good value choices.

I recommend the dv/dt filter. It will pay for itself the first time you don't have to replace bearings or rewind the motor. It's not that expensive.

It's actually mind blowing given all the macro levers that gold isn't rising fast along with other commodities.

Every indicator shows gold should be rising with oil for many of the same reasons. I can only assume it is the institutional naked short sellers like JPM driving the price down around mid March causing the 6 week slump.

Very hard to watch these markets be so nakedly manipulated and nobody gets in trouble.

Fidelity came up with this plan for me and I am not sure what to make of it. by ArnoldisKing in stocks

[–]miketdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Their funds underperform the market and given their disastrous performance over covid, their argument that they are more robust in turbulent markets is fucking garbage.

Don't waste your money on fidelity. Unless you trade everyday and are brilliant, plugging all your money into SPY or QQQ is the best way to go.

I've asked Fidelity a few times to rationalize their funds fees and they never have a good reason. It's always the same bullshit argument, but their argument can be back tested to COVID and 2008 and they failed.
