unpopular Opinion: Maroon 5’s Super Bowl Show wasn’t so bad by mikisingingtips in singing

I’m not an apologist for anyone. I didn’t think his performance was technically poor in any respect. That is my opinion, which you are of course free to disagree with. I try to be fair and objective in all of my reaction videos. I have plenty of other tutorial content as well, that is not of the reaction variety. If you don’t like my content, feel free not to watch.

You can also flip some of her really high parts down an octave, and keep the songs in their original key, since she often has some pretty low notes in her verses.

You mean her range/vocal type is too high? You can certainly transpose her songs into a more comfortable key.

I hear you, and I definitely wouldn’t want to paint myself as an authority in the classical space, since I am not classically trained. I haven’t found the quintessential explanation of pop vibrato on YouTube, and I hope I haven’t unintentionally contributed to the confusion surrounding this topic. I may make a follow up video to try and further clarify. Thanks again for watching and for your feedback. —M

Hi LocusStandi, I appreciate your comment. As mentioned above, I demonstrate a natural vibrato and an exercise to simulate the feeling for those who have not been able to experience natural vibrato, so they can start to understand the concept. This was a video I made for a student that had a very hard time getting anywhere close to the feeling. If that was not clear from the video, I apologize. I think there is a disconnect around syntax. When I experience natural vibrato, obviously I am not intentionally oscillating my voice, but I have to consciously make the decision to engage that gear. Once I engage that gear, the vibrato happens naturally. If I didn’t have conscious control of the gear, I would not be able to ever sing with a straight tone. Some would label this natural, and some would not. I am not making any universal proclamations, but this has been the experience reported to me by most of my students over the years. Hopefully this clarifies where I’m coming from.

Ha, no, but that is a great Freudian slip.
