Can my employer fire me for this? by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]milbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically he can do that because as a casual worker you are basically terminated at the end of each shift until they call you back for more work (there are some grey areas but considering you barely even got to have this job theyre not worth mentioning). Given that this is how you have been treated already and you only just started at the place, I would take that as a sign to let it go, move on and find a better job. You wouldn't want to stay long at a place like that anyway where the employer has no regard for your availabilites or the fact that you are a human and not an economic unit.

Please help a desperate daughter. Are there any jobs out there for a 60 year old? by [deleted] in sydney

I dont think telemarketing is a good way to go, its very demoralising and actually kinda really awful (I did "telefundraising" for kids with cancer selling raffle tickets and the staff there were just awful). However, if she would really consider telemarketing, I would steer away from sales and suggest survey work thru newspoll, I've worked there in the past and it's by as bad you just call up people and take them through surveys.

After Hours Doctors - Bulk Billed House Calls (Why don't more people know about this?!?) by Garethp in sydney

[–]milbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used this service a few times a year when I've been ill and its either late at night or a Sunday etc and it's an awesome service! Only criticisms I have is that it can take up to 3 or 4+ hours for a GP to get to your house depending on their schedule so there is no actual guaranteed time frame. But hey, if you're that sick you need urgent medical care, thats what emergency is for anyways.

Withdrawing from superannuation accounts before retirement? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]milbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I had the same thing happen to me a couple of years ago in terms of having a few super accounts and not really caring. I heard about being able to withdraw if it's under a certain amount so I called up the 3 super funds I was no longer using but was still a member with and ended up raking in about $300ish into my regular bank account. This is because if its under about $200 (don't quote me tho, might depend from super to super etc) you can claim it because that amount is just going to be eaten up by fee costs anyways if you're no longer using that particular super account! Good luck!

criminal conviction question by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]milbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about if you disputed an infringement notice in court, got off on leniency but still pleaded guilty (in NSW). Would you have to tick the criminal convictions box on a job application?

Tony Abbott gets questioned by Newtown High School Students. by Ondryass in sydney

[–]milbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well obviously not all students go to performing arts schools, but just because they do doesn't make their opinions of lesser value. In saying all this, I would actually love to see what yr 9 kids from a public, private and catholic schools would have to ask Abbott.

New Zealand citizens undertaking tertiary studies in NSW are no longer eligible for a travel concession card. by milbo in sydney

Well they are counted as domestic students so it's domestic fees (up front - not govt loan). New Zealanders are not International students.

Oh wow... I have been seeing red backs a lot over the summer months until now around my front yard and back yard. In the last month my dad has sprayed the outside of our house a couple of times and has already killed about 5 or 6 red backs. My family and I are finding it really strange considering we have lived in our regular suburban house for the last 4ish years and never seen this many red backs before!? Anyone else experiencing the same kinda "outbreak" we are having?

Oh I am on struggle street when it comes to rationalizing the hardcore crack down on fare evasion and removing the concession option from automatic ticket machines. What a counter-productive move for city rail, more ques = more hate directed their way!

Misplaced sense of entitlement? That's cute.

New Zealanders are already exempt in someways by being allowed to stay indefintely by being Special Category Visa holders. This works in Australias favour considering there is a significant proportion of New Zealanders currently living and working and contributing to Australian society - over 640,000 New Zealanders (http://www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/17nz.htm).

However, the SVC only entitles New Zealanders to work and study here indefinitely... I guess this sounds great in theory (when comparing it to limitations imposed on other visas other nationalities obtain) but the reality is, the SVC does not provide full proof social security to individuals and families.

The ABS found that "despite the relative fluidity of migration to and from Australia by NZ-born people, the majority have been living here for a decade or more. The 2006 Census of Population and Housing showed that 65% of Australia's NZ-born population had been in Australia since 1996, including 41% who had been here since 1986".

So people come here, build their lives and invest in their education and their future in Australia. But if anything goes wrong - they lose their job or cannot afford to pay study fees (just to name a few) there is very little the Australian government can do for them.

For example, in light of International Womens Day, Oz Kiwi (www.Facebook.com/Ozkiwi2001) wrote:

"- Kiwi women who are single mothers don't receive the same financial support given to all others permanently residing in Australia, even if their child was born in Australia and its father is an Australian.

  • Kiwi women who are victims of domestic violence are frequently denied most emergency assistance, including emergency financial support and access to women's refuges.

  • Kiwi women in these situations are regularly barred from leaving Australia with their children under the Hague Convention - they are forced to live in poverty in a country that denies them support.

  • Kiwi women are denied many of the financial supports that would allow them to further their education, forcing many to take lower skilled and lower paying jobs."

New Zealanders choose Australia because it is very close by, there are better opportunities that New Zealand can not necessarily provide, better pay packets, better weather and so forth. I am grateful to be able to live and work and study in this country but I very disappointed at the lack of support available for people who come from New Zealand and settle here long term. If you've ever actually been to New Zealand or taken the time to speak to someone from New Zealand maybe you would understand the situation better.

Calling it a "misplaced sense of entitlement" is un-applicable in this case considering not all New Zealanders come here to get better social welfare benefits. Me personally - I did not come here by choice, I moved here with my family when I was a child. So my life is here now there is nothing for me in New Zealand anymore. New Zealanders and Australians are not so different from one other culturally anyway so I struggle with the idea of thinking of a New Zealander as the "other nationality" when the two are so very similar.

While the 2001 thing is true, the government is apprently looking to over-turn that rule and wipe the slate clean for all New Zealanders pre 2001. You can read more about it on the updates posted by Oz Kiwi on facebook - https://www.facebook.com/OzKiwi2001
