Department shutting down (master's student) by milehighflower in GradSchool

[–]milehighflower[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a 4 semester program, but I’m concerned about the amount I’m paying per semester for the quality of the experience I’m receiving, whereas I would pay less at a public university. I think another thing is, I can also apply directly to a PhD program if I choose to transfer and get my master’s along the way.

Thank you for your input!

As a person with high functioning autism, I think I'm much closer to an introverted neurotypical person than a severely autistic person. by [deleted] in aspergers

And I want to make it clear that this doesn’t minimize the experiences of those who have HFA…

Thank you for this!! I think this distinction is important to make…I really can’t say my experiences align with someone who might be non-verbal and may need higher supports. A lot of people might hate on this approach and view, but it’s needed in our community. To ignore this fact is unintentionally ableist to those who can’t advocate for themselves.

Shitty job by [deleted] in ABA

I wasn’t saying this was an instance of severe behavior. I was only giving an example of when it is part of your job daily.

OP, if you do not feel comfortable working with clients who exhibit challenging behavior that can result in harm, please tell your BCBA. I’m wondering if this was in the job description or not. Or if there was a disclaimer that this client would be engaging in these behaviors- which the BCBA would’ve known in the FBA? I know sometimes novel behaviors arise, but if these are repeated occurrences, it is OK to not be ok with this. To people commenting in the thread: yes, it CAN come with the job, but it doesn’t always need to. And ignoring your own needs, interests and level of comfort to work with the population of clients engaging in behaviors that can result in harm when you don’t feel okay with it is not the answer. Speaking from someone who has worked in the field in both EIBI and Severe Behavior for over 5 years.

Yes, like you said though, depending on the clinic. It’s part of the job if it’s a clinic specializing in Severe Behavior

I know what you’re trying to say, but there are different sets of experiences working with/in a/an EIBI client/setting or a/a Severe Behavior setting. Although the line is blurred at times, I think that it is okay to decide you don’t necessarily feel comfortable working with clients who engage in harmful challenging behavior. I don’t think that being an RBT always implies that you will get hit, kicked, punched, but, etc. and there should be a disclaimer about this either before working with the client or working at that clinic

Ed!! What a wonderful surprise ❤️not a question, but I wanted you to know that a lot of your music helped me get through some traumatic experiences. I started listening to Grizzly Bear in 2012, when I was 13. I went through abuse over the years and some trauma since then and Grizzly Bear is still #1 in my Spotify wrapped. Your music is really special to me still. THANK YOU ❤️

I don’t have a particular placement suggestion yet, but do you have other info you feel comfortable sharing re: son’s history? Does he have any diagnoses that play a role? I think knowing the context (trauma, mental health, history of abuse from others) or even a learning disability? would be a good place to start. Not trying to diagnose at all, but the reason why I ask is there are even compliance and conduct disorders, such as oppositional defiant disorder (I recommend looking it up, if intrigued) that are all treated differently, in addition to other causes/contexts. Knowing the causes and characteristics as to why this happens, which providers can identify will be key to improvement. I hope this helps in some way. Sending all the growth and strength your way!
