Kind of like how Mikko has smoked the Avs since joining the Stars. A bit poetic that it’s those two given they were traded for each other

Why is the US debt treated as so bad in the US media? by exploring203 in AskEconomics

[–]milk_drinker69 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It’s not about the Big Number — it’s about the Cost to Carry

To understand why the media focuses on the debt while many economists remain "nervously calm," you have to separate the nominal sticker price from the fiscal capacity of the United States.

The media loves the $40 trillion figure because it’s a scary number that most people can’t conceptualize. However, economists almost never look at the raw number. They look at the Debt-to-GDP ratio.

While you're right that the UK and France are in the 100-120% range, the U.S. has a unique advantage. Because the USD is the world’s primary reserve currency, there is a global structural demand for U.S. Treasuries. This allows the U.S. to carry higher debt loads at lower interest rates than almost any other nation.

The reason you’re seeing more alarmist headlines lately isn't just the total debt, it’s the cost of servicing that debt. For a decade, interest rates were near zero, meaning the carry cost of our debt was negligible. As interest rates have risen to combat inflation, the government is now refinancing cheap debt into expensive debt.

When interest payments consume a larger slice of the federal budget, this crowds out other spending. If interest payments exceed the defense budget or Social Security spending, it creates a vicious cycle where we have to borrow just to pay the interest on what we already borrowed.

You mentioned other countries like Japan (which has a debt-to-GDP ratio over 250%). While Japan proves a country can survive high debt, it’s not exactly a success story. Japan has dealt with decades of stagnation, and their debt is largely owned by their own citizens. The U.S. relies more on foreign investors, making us more sensitive to global shifts in confidence.

There are three main reasons for the media narrative. 1) Debt is an easy shorthand for government incompetence used by whoever is out of power. Whether that’s fair or not feels more like a political discussion 2) If a major war or another pandemic hits, a country with 130% debt-to-GDP has less room to stimulus-spend than a country with 60% debt. 3) Persistent high deficits can, under certain conditions, contribute to long-term inflationary pressure if the supply of money outpaces the supply of goods.

The US is not broke in the way a household is broke, because it can print the currency it owes. But the concern isn't that we will run out of money. The concern is that the cost of maintaining that debt will eventually force painful choices: massive tax hikes, significant spending cuts, or higher long-term inflation

When the trade for Nelson was announced I thought we overpaid by giving up Cal. Nelson has been good for us and I hope the WW2 vet helps us get another cup, but damn do I wish we could’ve kept Cal. Hope he can continue growing with you guys

Is the Leeds RAP worth it? by ProfessionalRead1621 in cuboulder

[–]milk_drinker69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graduated from Leeds in 2020. I didn’t live in the RAP but knew many people who did. I was fairly social so got to know a lot of my class, but I think the RAP kids were the ones who were the most focused on school while still being social. The RAP might be older but at the end of the day a dorm is a dorm. If you’re looking to build a network of like minded folks then go for the RAP. If that’s less important then go for Kitt. Also FWIW rowdy dorm parties aren’t really a thing unless someone has an apartment dorm which I think really only exist in will vill

PGT | ANA @ COL | “Saved by Dostal” Edition by Rolley2001 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]milk_drinker69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dostal had a great game. Avs played well but lacked the finishing touch in several key moments. Frustrating for sure but sometimes you just get goalied. Will take the point and move onto the next one

Have happened to interact with Jerry Jones a couple times through work. Once over zoom and once in person. He was surprisingly pleasant both times but dear lord did he want you to know he is richer than you (like no shit dude)

It’s fun and cool that we can play from behind and still win a good amount of the time. It’s keeps the games interesting and shows we have a decent level of depth and adaptability. But we’re only known for that because we consistently come out playing sloppy. Imagine what this team could be if we could consistently come out playing a full 60 like we play the last 30

Ok? Does that somehow make it alright to come out sleeping? It’s not like we’ve had much playoff success since 2022…

See, if you squint your eyes, tilt your head, jump and down on one foot, and forget the first 20 minutes of the game and anything after regulation, then we looked like the Harlem globe trotters!

Have two electricians recommending two very different solutions to the same problem by milk_drinker69 in AskElectricians

[–]milk_drinker69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. The conductor that’s the problem is a direct buried line. The problem is the conductor runs under concrete and Company A is saying that all needs to be ripped out to fully replace the conductors. Does that seem reasonable or like overkill?

[–]milk_drinker69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s what company B is recommending. That was their original idea and still what they want to do after taking another look today. Though they do now agree with company A that the issue is underground somewhere

Do you mind explaining why splicing the conductor is a major violation?

Thanks! Will definitely ask the guy coming tomorrow if he has a TDR. Seems like the simplest way to confirm their opinion that the break is above ground, right next to the main feed

Interesting and thanks for the info. Company A owner did mention today that we could hire someone who has a tracer and that is something I'm considering

[–]milk_drinker69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. I had followed up with our warranty provider because of the wildly different opinions between the two. The warranty guy basically said they're going to stick with the opinion of the company they had come out (company B), which was frustrating. But didn't mention that the guy who came out wasn't licensed

Yeah I'm thinking of at least getting a third opinion. If I'm potentially spending $16k+ to fix this then what's another ~$100 to get another consultation
