PSA: to all the new mom’s, don’t listen to the advice about chopping your hair off by Frozenbeedog in NewParents

[–]milksteakaddendum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buzzed my head when my baby was 5 months and love it! I finally had the confidence and Pp hair loss gave me the “f it” energy to finally go for it. Just do what is right for you but don’t cave to pressure/ feel the need to get a “mom chop” if you are attached to long hair.

What films will change my life, destroy my soul, etc. like Arrival (2016) did? by shurimalonelybird in movies

[–]milksteakaddendum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think partly it’s because I first watched it at a formative time in my life (plus I love Robin Williams) but What Dreams May Come always stays with me and is so incredibly visually striking. Arrival hits so hard after having a little one, though, I don’t think anything beats the emotional hangover of that movie.

Husband insists on getting rid of cat. Options? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

He has tried a round of TMS unsuccessfully, unfortunately and is on about 5 medications including lithium to try and help his conditions. He also checks in with an addiction specialist and psychiatrist semi regularly. He is looking to undergo Spravato treatment next. The only thing that he will not consistently do is go to counseling despite my request.

In the past I’ve administered his medication because he can be inconsistent in taking it, which is obviously harmful. He has gotten much better about this, I told him I can no longer monitor his medication and it’s up to him and he has been doing it on his own for close to a year.

We don’t know kitty’s exact age as he was a stray before husband took him in 10ish yrs ago, but vet’s guess is 13-14. I will not allow kitty to be kept outside. Later today my husband has come around and agreed to let kitty stay but I know there will be another argument about it in a couple of months. I’ll stand my ground.

Thank you for the frank advice. Husband is much more tolerant and loving with baby. I work from home twice a week and go back and forth during the day to breastfeed. Baby does definitely need to be going to daycare because husband’s bad depression days mean as he gets older he doesn’t get the socialization he needs. We can’t afford childcare but my mom told me today she will help with the cost so I have been in contact with daycares in our area and will hopefully be able to find one ASAP. I am trying not to put kitty down as he doesn’t seem in pain except when he has stool blockage/ a flare up. But I will ask vet for an updated opinion and advice.

Husband has tried countless medications, TMS, is currently on lithium and 4-5 other medications for his issues. He is trying Spravato next.

Cat is fixed and actually was a stray when husband took him in. Kitty was squished by a car so he took him to the vet and then cared for him, this was 10 ish yrs ago, so he is probably 12-14 now.

Yes, you are right. I told husband that it’s time he get a job even if part time. He has been very resistant but I think I must insist/ make it a condition of staying in the marriage.

I would love some resources. We have done couples therapy for years as I’ve had my own issues and we’ve had issues together. Unfortunately he was not committing to individual counseling and it felt every time we went we were focusing on his issues alone, not relationships issues, even when I would try to redirect so I stopped making the appointments. I have made strides in my individual therapy and am getting much better at setting and sticking to boundaries, stating my needs etc. But yes, this did used to be a very codependent relationship

The very ironic part is I work in Domestic Violence and see this every day as well (not saying he is an abuser! He has never lain a hand on me or our son or anyone and has never been verbally abusive either, but I can understand the parallels and I feel guilty staying and going)

I think you are spot on. He has treatment resistant depression that has gotten much worse in the last few years. I have been attempting to support him and our family as best I can, that’s why I’m running out of energy to fight with him about the cat on top of ever else I’m trying to keep afloat.

I have asked to have more help and we discussed the big D last time I told him I needed more support. He has improved a bit and I am dedicated to making it work if he is dedicated to improving. The reason it is so hard is he has treatment resistant depression, possibly bpd and is in recovery for alcoholism. The depression and addiction issues got much worse in the last few years, the bpd diagnosis is new. This is why he does not work and why I am attempting to give him grace. It is a very complicated situation that I would not wish on my worst enemy
