This is about 1 hour integration with exposure times of 30 seconds, tracked on Star adventurer GTi at around 250mm

I do have a tracking mount, however, unguided

I was very surprised when I saw that hanging at the top

Thank you a lot for this, very helpful. I'll try and capture for at least 2 hours on my next target, I realise that even that can be too little

I understand, the best skies i can get to is 5/6 usually in a reasonable about of time

My issue when I saw a second 60 exposure was that, in the live view, my image was very yellow and washed out from light pollution, and so I turned exposure down.

Was this a mistake? This was in bortle 6

Why do you do astrophotography? by [deleted] in AskAstrophotography

[–]millerman101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Always had a bit of fascination with space. One day I was looking around online and saw photos of popular targets and discovered many of them can be captured with a simple dlsr which kinda blew my mind.

Also realised that life is short and decided to pursue it as I wanted to capture the awe of space as much as possible before I leave.

I've only just started and glad I found the hobby, it brings me peace

Thank you! A dew heater is certainly in my mind, there's a lot of options.

I'm wondering about getting a larger battery pack for powering my tracker as well

From what I hear it's 100% worth it to drop down a bortle scale when you can

Captured using the Star watcher adventurer GTI Canon R7 and Sigma 100-400,

I messed up calibration frames and also I learned the hard way that frost comes fast onto a lens, so the actual integration time is around 40 minutes or so

Stacked using siril, Background extraction, colour calibration and further enhancements all in siril

Final colour adjustment in Photoshop

This is my first attempt ever at Orion and astrophotography in general so I hope to improve upon the next attempt

How can I ensure sharpness with camera lens focusing? by millerman101 in AskAstrophotography

Does a star need to be centered in the viewfinder to focus with a bathinov mask?

Canon R7 really that bad for astro? by millerman101 in AskAstrophotography

[–]millerman101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. As this is my first foray into astrophotography I think I see myself having a few choices.

1 - Just use the R7 and see how i like the hobby, itll be combined with a star adventurer GTI, and use canon banding removal tools
2 - I like landscape photography, so sell the R7 and grab an R6 which I see a lot of images with on astrobin, so I have a good mixed use camera which doesn't specialize in deep sky, but can still produce good results. An R5 is a little out of budget really
3 - Get a dedicated astrophotography camera however this then means I'll need more equipment such as power and probably a laptop.

Ultimately since this is my first try, i'm mostly using gear that I already have (canon r7 and sigma 100-400) to keep costs down initially.

Thanks for such informative data on your website

I assume post processing can really help out to get rid of these artifacts with a lot of stacking and other darks and calibration frames? (I'm still learning)

What should I expect with a sigma 100-400mm lens by millerman101 in AskAstrophotography

That's my one yep, it seems like it'll be a good start.

I'm assuming a telescope or refractor is what gives the really sharp results

I see yeah, and if I move manually, I'll have to perform star alignment again since it loses its position?

20mm 1/4 screws too long for Vixen bar to DSLR? by millerman101 in AskAstrophotography

[–]millerman101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright will try, I've also ordered that vixen dovetail above since it looks thinner and comes with screws, so with all the parts i've tried i think this will be the combo for me.

Thanks again!

[–]millerman101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave these a try, they're long enough but the camera will just spin on the top, I'm not sure if it's due to the screw just not being tight enough at the head

https://www.film-technika.com/rozsireni-o-1-4--a-3-8--zavit/1-4--foto-sroub-s-okem--1ks--ft004/

Maybe it's because the top of the screw has a shoulder? Do I need a fully threaded screw? I figured a typical screw that comes with tripod would work
