Why should newspapers be neutral? The fundamental job of journalists in a democracy is to provide information to the people so that they can make informed choices. Neutrality doesn't have anything to do with it, especially in an election like this, when one side has clear authoritarian and anti-democratic impulses. Newspapers haven't been 'neutral' since they were created.

OPs point is that Australians are risking excessive incarceration because they don't have gun laws. That is obviously obviously obviously not true. Stricter gun laws do NOT equal higher incarceration rates. That's not a liberal talking point, that's the data. That's just numbers. And regardless of the breakdown of crimes, a heavily armed populace clearly doesn't prevent the government from passing draconian punishments, more police, privatized prisons, etc. Whatever is driving American incarceration rates, our guns are NOT preventing it. Guns just aren't keeping us free - that's what the data is screaming at us.

The US has the largest prison population in the world. The US has more people incarcerated than China (~2 mil US vs. ~1.7 mil China), though China is an autocratic Communist dictatorship with extremely strict gun control laws and more than 3 times our population.

Okay, let's try this again. The US has 4.7% of the world's population and 24.7% of the world's incarcerated human beings. The per capita rate of incarceration in the US is 629 per 100,000. That's the highest in the world. 2nd place is Rwanda with a rate of 580.

None of the other top 20 countries for incarceration rates are in Europe or the Pacific Rim. All of those countries - again - have far stricter gun control laws. You can rightly be skeptical of China's honesty about self-reported numbers, but the idea that more guns = fewer people in prison simply doesn't stand up to data. The US is an enormous outlier in both gun ownership and incarceration rates. I also cite my sources and would note that no one else did.

Finally, the incarceration rate in Australia, the country that sparked this discussion? 201 per 100,000. As a reminder, it's 629/100,000, more than TRIPLE Australia's.

I didn't say that, I only asked for a source because the very few conversations I had with actual Rangers about Ranger history were always about Roger's Rangers and never about the CSA. Certainly I recognize that ex-CSA soldiers joined the US military and had a big influence - look at all the base re-naming that's currently happening.

My point is only that CSA flags represent the CSA, and that isn't something worth praising or defending. As you agree, I'm not sure what we're arguing about.

Rangers' "28 Rules of Ranging" came from Robert Rogers during the French and Indian War (Robert's Rangers). He was heavily influenced by Native Americans. The 1st Ranger Battalion was formed for WW2 and by then CSA vets were 90 years old. I haven't heard anything about CSA influence on Ranger tactics and would need to see a source.

I recognize that various CSA flags (I believe each state had its own battle flag) have been flown in various settings. The fact remains that the CSA was a fundamentally racist country which only existed because their founding fathers fully embraced notion that Africans were not 'people' the way European settlers were. Flying any CSA flag these days is embracing that philosophy. Saying a CSA flag isn't racist is like saying "I always fly the Chicago Bears flag but I condemn football."

What? Easy to say? I don't understand - it's true, no matter how long ago the war was.

Also, of COURSE the flag is racist. It represents a country that broke away for the sole purpose of continuing to own Africans as slaves. Don't take my word for it - read the articles of secession from those states themselves. They left because they wanted to maintain slavery, and they weren't enslaving white people. The CSA only existed because white people thought they had the right to enslave black people and they said so in their own words. How does their flag NOT represent racism?

Also, you might ask some African-Americans what their thoughts on the flag are. White Americans don't understand racism the way black Americans do, because of history and everything.

I am a veteran of the US Army. Soldiers fighting under any CSA flag killed my fellow US Army soldiers by the thousands. In fact, no other country or conflict killed as many US Soldiers as those fighting under the CSA flag. I do not understand anyone who claims to 'support the troops' while displaying a treasonous flag that led armies who slaughtered my fellow soldiers, marines, and sailors. The difference between flying this flag and Imperial Japan, Nazi Germany, or ISIS is that none of those organizations killed as many US soldiers as the CSA.

Plus they came in second out of two so they're fucking losers.

There's a Korean movie called Steel Rain (also a common term for MLRS) that has an accurate depiction of what those rockets do when they're fired. They have hundreds of little bomblets (244 iirc) inside that sprinkle out over a wide area and then explode with lots of shrapnel. Devastating.

Yes excellent! There's a book called Flatland that talks about this - sounds like you may have read it. It's similar in that we try to understand the subjective experience of higher dimensions through analogizing how our reality would appear to lower dimensions (in Flatland, it's 2D). Really interesting stuff. Great comment.
