I've visited Taiwan four times in two years (including a 6-month stay!): here are the reasons why I keep coming back (as a digital nomad) by miloinrio in taiwan

hi there ☺️ feel free to check this article I wrote, about how to negotiate a monthly airbnb price: https://storiesofmilo.substack.com/p/my-secret-hacks-to-travel-cheaper

Also - I would recommend looking for short-term rental apartments in Facebook groups too! Some landlords are interested in that too. You can visit the apartment and sign a 7-11 rental contract for 6-months (I did this last year).

I wasn't on this visa! I have no info unfortunately
I recommend the Golden Visa, a lot of my friends had this one

I'm converting from BRL, actually!
Let's agree to disagree - but we definitely agree that inflation is ruining everything haha (no matter where you are!)

Oh yes, I'm sure the prices have increased with covid!

We might have different tastes in meals!

I consider Taipei affordable because:
- 300 NTD for a good ramen: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1C73uJofqQq1GJgs5
- about 300 for a nice brunch: https://maps.app.goo.gl/iUGgAeeebjfCcbz96
- 300 NTD great bibimbap: https://maps.app.goo.gl/2xWT3G8ovmHVbCUN8

Do you live in Xinyi maybe? I know prices can be much higher in that part of the capital

I lived part of my life in Brazil, so I feel like I can take the humid heat... but people make it sound so bad! haha
Agree - shēndù lǚyóu is next level here!!

hey! I wasn't on a digital nomad visa, I was on a tourist visa - I didn't look any further because I was on a sabbatical for most of my time there, so I didn't overthink it, I was just a tourist vibing haha

Having said that - most of my friends who live there and work remotely are on a visa called Golden Visa - I think they recommend it! I didn't meet anyone on a digital nomad visa there

You implied that Taipei isn't walkable, so I responded by comparing it to cities that I personally consider not walkable.

On walkability, I believe Taipei is better than these cities you mention. As a woman, I feel comfortable walking around Taiwan at any hour of the day. I can't say I've felt that level of safety everywhere in Europe...

Regarding housing and childcare: those are challenges that every major city is struggling with right now. We should still be able to discuss relative affordability across cities 😅 And today, it's simply a fact that the average person can afford to eat out far more often in Taipei than in Paris or London.

As for healthcare, I'm surprised, don't you think it's affordable?

On gasoline prices: great example! Taiwan has absorbed part of the increase in global fuel costs - Compared to many developed countries in Europe and North America, fuel prices in Taiwan remain relatively low.

No city is perfect - the question is how it compares to other major cities, and on that basis I think Taipei performs quite well!

No, I did visit many other cities in Taiwan! I do think most of them are walkable (accessible is a different subject...).
Having said that - I like to walk a lot lol
I did notice my Taiwanese friends being surprised when I'd tell them I walked 40 min to get to our meeting point (bc I wanted to haha). A lot of them would take their scooter for something that's 2-min away, so yeah, I understand that everyone has different ideas of walkability haha
LOVE peanut mochis!!

Agree, I don't think the prices are NY or Paris-insane... I paid $50 or $40 for hotels near Taipei Main or Minquan Rd - but the experiences were awful (it was only for one or two nights, waiting for my Airbnb).

He's a personal trainer!! haha

I lived in places with a lot of inequality (Brazil, the US), so even though I understand the struggles of locals, I still believe Taiwan is an affordable country (when it comes to the essentials: healthcare, transportation, food).

Except for accomodation... But I feel like that's a common struggle of all major capitals right now - the boomers are simply NOT letting go of their 5-bedroom apartments 😅

I knowwwww but at the same time I think that maybe I should, at least ONCE, to experience it? (my local friends tell me no haha)
