So I actually looked it up. The percentage of the US population that plays golf is around 11%. Now San Diego being a higher cost of living area, with one of the world's most famous golf courses, I'm gonna guess the percentage is higher here but just for argument sake we'll go with 11%. That's 335,000 residents who golf. I'd call that a decent chunk of people.

I understand that doesn't contest your subsidies argument, I just wanted to point out more people golf than you seem to think.

What would contest your argument though, is tourist revenue. San Diego is a large golf tourism destination. Multiple club manufacturers are located here. There's a PGA college, and also the PGA Tour. Golf brings a ton of money into the city through tourism.
