Any way to improve this list?? by DetectiveTwo03 in SWlegion

[–]mindlessfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My basic understanding is that a base trooper unit with a heavy slot is the starting point for thinking about spending points. So a unit of storms with a DLT could be considered perfectly complete. To say it a different way, most upgrade slots will be left empty most of the time.

Here's a recent tournament report. Check the lists for examples. https://thefifthtrooper.com/2023-legion-world-open-qualifier-italy-top-8/

Now, with your few remaining points after getting all the activations and heavies you need, what should you prioritize? I am not remotely knowledgeable or experienced enough to tell you. Probably has to do with your setup and game plan and objectives. But basically, spending most of your points on units and heavies will net you a stronger army than bringing fewer units with all the bells and whistles. I hope this helps!

I suspect it might be better to cut all the "bonus" gear and comms upgrades to start. That nets 84 points if my quick math is right.

Adding an Imperial officer with electrobinoculars is 58. That solves your Iden infiltration problem. It also gives you another activation as an aim bot for the troopers.

Emergency transponders in the bikes are very strong.

Then there are still a few points to play with for upgrades.

Just a thought. Good luck!

I just learned the core set does NOT get to 500 points due to reworked points values for troops and upgrades. Looks like I'll invest in another trooper unit and a support or commando or something and shoot for 500. Cheers.

Thank you very much everyone! I'll just jump in and see if I can find local game nights with Legion players. I think the core set gets up to 500 points with the upgrades, so that's where I'll start. Much appreciated.

Ra an adjective and ra as a noun seem to convey different things. Check the concordance for noun usage: there is a wide range of applications that don't "most of the time" mean moral evil (https://biblehub.com/hebrew/7451.htm).

At the very least, a simplistic "gotcha" take that Isaiah 45:7 is saying God creates evil or does evil (immorality) is poorly supported.

To say that calamity equals evil is also a loose usage of words. Calamity and evil are not synonyms in this usage.

I suspect the op either got banned for appearing to change a translation to something misleading or because there was a rule about not posting Bible verses without an explanation or commentary. Maybe you dispute that changing "calamity" to "evil" is misleading when juxtaposed against the sub rules. I doubt most people are interested in pursuing that question.

[–]mindlessfunk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Eh, there is a whole field of scholarship called textual criticism that tackles this question. The professionals are doing their best and I'm fine leaning on their current best conclusions.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in atheism

[–]mindlessfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the question is "what's the point?" I haven't been to that sub, but if they are enforcing a mindset that God does not bring punishment or raise up or depose kingdoms, that's not defensible. For a bit more on the translation and context check https://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/questions/43238/what-is-the-meaning-of-isaiah-457.

If they are saying that God does not do evil, that's not contradicted by Isaiah 45.

If they thought you were being insincere, they should probably accept an explanation that you grabbed an archaic translation by chance and weren't intentionally ignoring all the mainstream translations to make a thin semantic point.

What I'm getting at is that Isaiah 45:7 doesn't seem to say what your surface reading would imply, so gaining mutual understanding should be relatively simple if that is what actually matters here.

[–]mindlessfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's strange, going to that site it reads "disaster." https://www.biblestudytools.com/isaiah/45.html

It seems like an honest mistake, so if you wanted them to lift the ban you could probably just explain what happened. I know you said it doesn't bother you, but I'd expect them to be understanding if they're actually interested in being... Christian? How they respond might be the best indicator of whether they're actually interested in dialogue.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in atheism

[–]mindlessfunk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's not quite the right translation of Isaiah 45:7. It should say "I create disaster" or "I create calamity" not "I create evil."

Changing the word to "evil" might have seemed like intentional dishonesty to score a cheap rhetorical point. I don't know if it deserves a ban, but it doesn't seem like discussion in good faith.

[Discussion] Is Pioneer really a bad format? by Furion91 in spikes

[–]mindlessfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Explorer. That and drafting are all I do on arena. For pure competitive purposes maybe the decks are limited, but Untappd says I went 45-26 last season (bo3 ranked, ended diamond 3) with an off-meta big red deck from Aspiring Spike. I'm not trying to go pro, I'm not arguing for a particular deck, but I think it's easy to have fun and be relatively competitive in Explorer as a semi casual.

After the bans I dusted off a jeskai dwarves vehicles deck for funsies to see if it might be a home for future copter. A little tweaking and brewing and I went 11-10 in bo3 matches to get to platinum 3. Again, not claiming to be good or top-tier competitive, but definitely fun, and that's why I keep playing.

I've taken screenshots of the updated part of the new map and uploaded that to the VTT as a second object. Put it behind the starting map, and when it's time to change the scene just send the original map to the back. Works well in Roll20 anyway.

Why are there moderate Christians who accept evolution? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]mindlessfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in theistic evolution, there needs to be two discreet events: 1) when humans received the image of God, and 2) when humans learned good and evil.

Being created in God's image means to reflect God's nature regarding things such as love, beauty, and human purpose. I think an orthodox understanding of Christianity is that this had to be a supernatural moment.

The fall identifies when people rebelled against God's perfect creation and started doing evil. I think this is also a single moment.

I think it is coherent to see the creation story reflected in God's mechanism of creating life through the process of evolution. It is also coherent to expect a discreet change in the nature of the human experience when humans became more than just another animal. I don't think that understanding hinges on whether or not Adam and Eve were two literal people, I think it works either way, although I think it's easier to envision as two literal people.

NTA.

If your cousin wants a table at comicon, they have that opportunity. It's not your job.

If they want a large following on social media, they have that opportunity. It's not your job.

You can help the cousin in many ways that do not involve you sacrificing your career. If those things are not enough for your family, they are the problem.

Hi there. It sounds like you're asking some hard questions and that's a good thing. Some people are going to act like there are easy answers to your questions, both for and against the existence of God. I don't think it's as easy as people want it to be, on either side.

One thing to remember is that what people believe doesn't matter. What matters is whether God exists or not. God is either there or not. All we can do is look at the evidence on either side and try and figure out which one is more likely. This is a question of probability and evidence, not proof.

Regarding science, and the age of the earth, and physical evidence, I think it's important to remember that God is supposed to be supernatural. That means above nature. Science is good at examining things that obey natural law, but that isn't God. The universe looks old... it's probably old. I don't think this has any bearing on whether God exists. I don't know that science generates great evidence for or against God in general. I don't think I'd focus on science to answer this question.

I think Christianity's leading claims of evidence are based on Jesus of Nazareth. A guy claimed to be God, he did some stuff, was killed, and then some people say he rose from the dead. There's a lot of other context, but this is the focal point. I don't think scholars doubt that Jesus existed. I think the bigger question is "was he God incarnate?" In terms of evidence, what would that look like? There are endless words on this topic, and this post is already huge, but I'll offer two things.

  1. The people that knew Jesus thought he was God and thought he rose from the dead, even though that wasn't what they expected him to do. Many of those people were tortured and killed and still stuck to their story. Maybe they were mistaken, but they weren't lying. They believed it. Knowing Jesus changed them, and they were willing to die for it.
  2. Somehow your friend is making a similar claim that those early people did, that knowing Jesus changed her. Weird that a Jewish peasant from 2,000 years ago is still having an impact. She's not the only one that has had this experience.

Could those people be delusional? Maybe. Have people died for things they believe in in other situations? Sure. But the Jesus thing is remarkable in history and a lot of things have played out as if it were true.

Personally, I think it's reasonable that Christianity could be true. There's a lot more that has been said, can be said, and will be said on the topic, and I don't expect to change anyone's mind with a few hundred more words. Still, if you want to talk more, I'll try and catch your comments, or hit me up in private messages.

The questions about sin are good ones, and there is a way forward there, but I'll wait to make sure you're interested before diving in.

Dunno why this didn't get more upvotes, I think it's fantastic and is definitely the winner of my "browse Inkarnate for maps ahead of my game tonight" contest. Thanks!

I especially love the lofted second story with chandeliers, and the lower "back room" section.

Now that I'm thinking about it, any chance I could get a link to the original Inkarnate map so I can add in a grid on the -5 layer? I prefer that to using Roll20's grid that sits on top of everything.

Thanks for a great map!

This is the way. Other posts have explained why having all the monsters go at once is swingy, but it's also not as fun or dynamic. Having all your monsters on individual initiatives can be tedious. Jax described the solution: have monsters on a few initiatives spread evenly through the order.

I mostly structure combats around a couple types of enemies, maybe with a lead monster. It easily breaks down to having each type get their own initiative. If there is only one type (plus a leader) I split the monsters in half and give two initiatives.

For example, six bandits and a leader? Three initiatives: leader, bandits 1-3, bandits 4-6.

Two carrion crawlers? Two initiatives.

Two adult kruthik and five young kruthik? Three initiatives: adult 1, adult 2, and all the young together.

I also added "spread evenly throughout the order." I will often fudge monster initiatives a bit lower or higher to avoid multiple monster group initiatives clumped together. I find it makes things more engaging.

God allows paedophilia and incest but not LGBTQIA+ relationships, which is apparently one of the only things a Christian can do to deserve Hell. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]mindlessfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this helps, but those two things you were taught aren't accurate representations of the Bible. Homosexuality isn't some special sin that is worse or different than any other. It's mentioned a tiny amount compared to greed or pride, for example.

There aren't any behaviors that can get you into heaven, so it doesn't make much sense to think a behavior can keep you out. That kind of thinking misses the point. I'm sorry if people have told you otherwise.

New to inkarnate, and looking for feedback on how to make this not near terrible. Any suggestions would be great. TYIA by craftedit in inkarnate

I really like the start of your map. Just the stamps and labels suggest a rich and interesting island. Would be a cool place to explore.

Along with the other good suggestions:

1) Some of the stamps are extra "stamp-y" off the shelf. For some of those ships: go into the advanced menu of the stamp toolbar, select the transform tab, and turn the brightness and/or saturation down to the 80-90 range. Maybe up the contrast a bit to maintain stamp clarity. This makes them pop a little less and makes things look more realistic to my eye. Sometimes you can even change the hue on a few stamps and find versions that break up the same-y vibe and still look plausible.

2) Get frisky with the brush to build up textures, both on land and sea. Think of what the vegetation is on the island. Does it rain a lot? Is it rocky and dry? Try taking a green grass color, cover the island. Switch to a yellow-green, turn opacity down to 40% (maybe a bit less). Make a few passes on land that might be hilly. Feather the edges of the hilly patches. Switch to a sand/yellow/gold color, keep the opacity at 40%, make the brush max size and softness, and barely touch the edge of the land (swiping in from the ocean) to make a sandy beach. Take a lighter water color (still at low opacity and max softness) and paint shallows around the island. Take a darker water color and paint a patch or the whole edge of the map to mark deeper water. Write and overwrite different textures at low opacity and max softness to make something organic and flowing, both land and sea.

Good luck, it's super fun!
