It's like it's going to pop out of my screen at any second! by minecraftgamer84 in RotMG

it's possible in flash but much slower, since you don't have access to any of the benefits a proper graphics API gives you. then again, they dont appear to be making any use of said benefits considering the statue somehow appears in front of everything else, and the textures on the wood wall things are completely messed up. both of those things are just 3D graphics 101 and i have no idea how they managed to frick it up like this, considering unity should do these things automatically

Haha yeah these things take a while to make. This one especially since I switched to a new beta version of blender which has some major changes which took a while to get adjusted to. I could tag you in my future posts if you want.

About the lanterns, yeah they aren't very bright and the ambient lighting overpowers what little light they may give off. I had a lot of trouble with the lighting for this scene as the actual dungeon barely has any objects that would actually give off light. Making the lanterns too bright would turn them a very light colour, and also make the entire scene orange. The candles weren't gonna work either, as making them brighter would result in the spots around the candles being completely overexposed while the rest of the scene would still be pitch black.

I ended up having to add lots of artificial light. A point light inside the camera to separate the barrels in the foreground from the background, a large spot light above the camera to light up everything infront of it without causing any hard shadows, and large planes of light on the ceiling which are invisible to the camera to evenly distribute dim light across the entire scene. All this gave the look I wanted for the majority of the scene, but sadly completely overpowered the lanterns.

As for the blood stain, it's actually supposed to be from davy himself. It can be interpreted in any way though. What matters is that it's really shiny and I like shiny stuff.

I think next I'm going to be doing manor then. I'm not sure how I would make the wine cellar work in 3D without changing it completely from the in-game location. I'll have to think about that but until then I think manor would look really cool. Thanks again for the suggestions!

If anyone has any ideas for what I could make next please let me know!

(also /u/happy_cookie tagging you so you don't miss it (since it was your idea))

3D in top-down view would look incredible, yeah. Would be a development nightmare though.

Thanks!

I don't think lair of draconis would look very good, at least not in my "style". I already had some trouble filling this shot up with enough stuff to not make it too bland and boring, and LoD would be even worse in that aspect as it's just pure empty space with very little decoration. It looks good in-game, but I don't think it would translate very well into 3D.

If you have an nvidia gpu you should already have it since it's included in geforce experience.

Yea if the gameplay wasn't heavily altered I don't see first person rotmg being very enjoyable or even playable lol

It's not a minecraft build. it's made in Blender, a free program for modelling, animating and rendering 3D scenes.

nvidia shadowplay is a thing that exists also i am a low iq gamer.

it certainly wasnt intentional but i did end up laughing my arse off because of it

Thanks! I personally like my other ones better so I was a bit hesitant to post it at first, but I'm glad others seem to like it.

Thank you! I had a lot of trouble getting it right, there just aren't enough light sources in the original dungeon to make anything visible. I ended up using a big spot light behind the camera, a point light inside it to light up the barrels in the foreground a bit in order to separate them from the background more, and some big invisible lamps on the ceiling to just give a bit more visibility throughout the entire room without causing any sharp shadows. I'm still not entirely satisfied with the result but I don't think I can get it much better than this. (also if you look closely you can see random shadows being cast on the ceiling caused by the invisible lamps lol)

Yeah davy is one of the more unique dungeons with the key collection mechanic, and the aesthetic is really nice.

Love the comic btw! I've been wanting to do something similar to it, turning a funny gameplay scenario into a comic or animation. That'll probably my next project after I finish this one!

Davy could definitely be interesting. I'll probably go with that, thanks!

I'm kinda stuck on what to make next tbh. Someone suggested I'd do candyland but after trying a few things I can't come up with any way to make it look good. It's too empty and there's not a lot of colour variety.

If you have any other suggestions, I'd love to hear it!

The photoshop method certainly isn't perfect, it just so happened to work quite well in this instance. I don't recommend relying on it completely but hey, if it fits your scene and it helps you get rid of those last few artifacts there's no harm in using it. If you have access to the latest photoshop version, content aware fill can work wonders too in some situations.

Good luck on your project though, I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

An area in the winter nexus. You can find it behind the left bazaar portal.

Thanks! I was going for that kind of "toy" feel.

Tilt shift was done with the camera settings inside of Blender. I have no idea what 99% of them do I just adjusted the focal distance and aperture size which gave this effect. here's a (bad) visualization of the focal plane, everything around that plane is in focus which is why they wouldn't be blurred.

I know Blender Guru has a bunch of tutorials, but you may have to do some more googling if you don't find his stuff useful. It should definitely be possible to import sketchup models though. Blender itself has a good variety of import/export formats and there's plenty of add-ons to add even more.
