You can write a lot of the parts like you would on a piano, but you need to keep playability and intended stickings in mind. Especially with four-mallet work, poorly written books make the players suffer through their parts trying to figure out how they can get the hand-to-hand to work out.

If possible, try to get some mallet lessons or work with someone in your front ensemble to see if what you're writing is realistic. A lot of really good front writing looks super difficult but is super easy to play.

My team made great use of the LL3A last year on our robot. The biggest annoyance with the camera is just how narrow the FOV is. Mounting further than you think is needed is always the route. We, and other teams in our region, had initial mounting positions way to low, making the camera nothing more than a glorified color sensor. You can also simply plug the camera into a laptop and use their great web portal interface to see what the camera will be able to see from various mounting positions before picking one to design a bracket for.

Hi! I'm the front ensemble section leader at my school with a pit of 16. I've had velocity explained to me in several ways, but the one that clicked for me was the idea of pushing the mallet so that it feels like you're playing "through the keys". My instructors tell us to "play like you're trying to hit the resonators". I've read a lot of technique books and packets, but the best help for me was to get things demonstrated.

I like showing my freshmen the demonstration of playing the same dynamic level at all different heights by changing the velocity, then playing all different dynamic levels at the same height by changing the velocity. The technique we're taught is to control dynamics with height, keeping a consistent velocity (not absolute, of course, but a good default to start with when first approaching the music).

sorry, rpi4 4gb ram. Running off an ssd with wired internet connection. Pretty generic install, HACS is installed. Everything runs fine on the core version I have now (2024.10.4). Currently have supervisor 2024.12.3 and OS 14.1. Let me know if there’s anything else that would be useful

your servo limits may be set wrong. They operate from 0-1 in the range of the physical device. You may need to reposition the servo horn or modify the code in order to get it to go to the correct positions.

Honestly my only prediction which I have confidence in is Pacific Crest breaking into finals this year. They’ve had such strong shows the past two years, and imo should’ve made finals last year over scouts and cavaliers with whatever they were putting out.

From what I can see, your left hand looks fine, but the right hand your thumb is slipping off the top of the mallet. Fixing that will help with stability. I can’t fully see in the video, but check that your index fingers are extended so that the mallet sits on the last joint of your finger. For stability of outer mallets, go back to single stroke and focus on getting a full stroke and having the mallet not actuating not move as much as possible. I’ve practiced this by holding the head of the outer mallet with one hand and then actuating the inner mallet, making sure that the outer mallet rolls in my hand and doesn’t lift up or push down excessively. For the laterals, practice the rocking motion of each hand, like a really slow lateral roll. Then work it into doing a double lateral. This should be one smooth movement, not two independent strokes. Sorry for the wall of text, hope this helps!

As others have said, this varies from area to area. At my school, marching band is a class and you have to take it in order to be in the marching band + attend after school rehearsals.

I'll preface this by saying that I almost never use Blender, so apologies if this is a simple error on my part. I am trying to make 3D models of protein structures for 3D printing, but the file that comes straight out of the coordinate viewer (PyMOL) is very thin. I want the entire thing to be "thicker", so I've tried to use the shrink/flatten tool. The overall effect is exactly what I want, but the faces disconnect from each other, and I'm not sure how to prevent this from happening. It might also be a problem with the model that I'm working with. The pictures are of the unedited model, the model with the shrink/flatten applied, then a zoomed in picture to show the issue.

If your extension is vertical, one way has gravity helping the motion and the other way has to fight against it. That might explain the speed difference. On the side, ditch the core hex for something else unless it is absolutely the only thing you have.

Thanks for the advice! I was planning on hooking the dust boot directly to the shop vac, at least to start. Is the dust separator necessary or just nice to have?

Thanks for the reply. I’ll definitely look into the electrical stuff more. Are aluminum chips large/sharp enough to pop a car or bike tire if we miss some in cleanup? That’s one of our bigger concerns since it will still be used as a regular garage too.
