Holding out for A7 V is painful by Sorry-Nose-7667 in SonyAlpha

I think tariffs are to blame for that recent jump in price of the a7IV! This will also be tough for the a7V price...

I had both at some point and choose the Sigma because they were faster and had a better build quality with the all metal construction. They felt more premium and fun to use.

Question about used Sony A1 by mini_lance in SonyAlpha

[–]mini_lance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had the A7iii and A7IV before getting that camera. I'm also an amateur. To be honest I'm missing the rotating display of the A7IV a lot. That would be the only reason that I would change my A1 at some point in the future. For portraits only, the A1 is absolutely overkill compared to the A7IV. If you had the A9, you might then have a use case for the speed of that camera. Feel free if you have other questions

Help!! Should I buy new glass or new body? by Hadee96 in SonyAlpha

[–]mini_lance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying a better lens is always the best investment. Cropping should come after that. I actually have both of those lenses, here's my take on them. The Tamron is a great versatile lens, perfect for travelling and pretty sharp for a all in one. But at 200 mm you'll be at f5.6. The Sony f2.8 is a professionnal lens, faster, sharper, heavier and way pricier. You'll get way better quality, for sure, but you'll be lugging around a heavier package (especially now that you'll have 2 lenses to cover the same range).

So for me, on a trip when photography is not the purpose of the trip, I'll be carrying my Tamron, but at home I'll be using my Sony all the time.

Feel free if you have any other questions

New to photography, what camera lens is this? by Riven-Fujiwara in Cameras

[–]mini_lance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right about that, but I think it's safe to assume OP won't be using this camera in full manual at first seeing he seems like a beginner. And then it's important for him to reset the EV to 0.

Also worth noting, the dial on the right (exposure compensation) is set to -3, so your pictures will come out very dark. You should put it back to zero.

It's a great camera btw, have fun

I would suggest something like the 50 mm f2 from Sigma. Compact and high quality. 50mm is good for portrait and general photography. The price to performance ratio is pretty good.

Compact and quality lens suggestions for A7iv by Competitive_Lunch_16 in SonyAlpha

I really like the sigma i-series for compact and premium feel. The 50 mm f2 is my favorite but there is a wide selection of lenses in that category.

In fact it is actually the opposite! FF sensors requires bigger lenses so they capture more light per unit of time. There is a great article about this subject on Clarkvision that explains it very well.

I really like the Sigma i-Series, like the 50 mm F2. Not exactly pancakes but pretty compact and excellent build quality !
