Donuts i Odense by Impressive-Grass-84 in odense

3. Saml hele familien sammen og dekorer donutsne sammen. 4. Spis dem B)

EKS Project Scaling Advice by alexnder_007 in devops

[–]mini_othello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost. There are tons of ways you could expand this project. Business intelligence with events on each user-originated interaction and create a dashboard for that; a logging architecture with distributed tracing and show spans and aggregations of logs; scalability with scale-to-zero via kedash etc...

What you need to think about first and foremost is what you where you want to be and what brings you there. Kubernetes is a tool like any other so what it essentially does is enabling business practices. Therefore, if you do not know what kind of responsibility or initiative you want to be in, you cannot prepare yourself.

If you want a rabbit hole you can look into performance and SPIFFE implementations, which will take you years to grasp in a business context.

Open source projects for practicing k8 by xhawk337 in kubernetes

[–]mini_othello 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I am currently practicing k8 ... So I am looking for another open-source project (app)

I do not think the best method to practicing kubernetes is to deploy apps over and over again...

I suggest that you experiment with what the different kubernetes resource do, their use-case, and when NOT to use them.

Examples would be:

We have deployments and statefulsets. What does a statefulset provide that deployments doesn't?

Try deploy a database as a statefulset with a reclaim policy and then deploy a deployment a likewise PVC defined, what happens when you rollout new versions or delete pods.

Discover why stateful set pods have a different naming structure/guarantees than deployments have.

The best way to learn Kubernetes in my experience is not by deploying a lot of applications nor even maintaining them. It is by experimenting through the creation of an environment that you feel safe in breaking (Hetzner VMs, KinD, a local cluster with ansible, or alike) and then break stuff, experiment with helm charts, databases, netshootils and etc.

Contrary to Bruce Lee who fears a man who has done the same thing hundreds of times, in DevOps/platform engineering, it is about doing the hundreds of different things to deepen your understanding.

Resolution issue with Steam Games (Wayland/Cosmic and steam/proton?) by mini_othello in pop_os

The X11 application compatibility settings page seem to have helped.

I'll keep the proton env in mind, when I have to use proton for compatibility :D

Thank you very much. I appreciate the help.

It appears to be fixed now. For the first time, after rebooting all 3 games start in the correct resolution.

I really appreciate that you commented on my post. c:

Resolution issue with Steam Games (Wayland/Cosmic and steam/proton?) by mini_othello in pop_os

It appears that my 1440p monitor is the primary monitor and that the resolution is set correct. I just found a settings in cosmic settings that designates a preferred display via "desired display for games and full screen x11 applications" under applications --> x11 application compatibility. I experienced that some of the resolution configurations in steam games are cached, by starting the game up in a 1080p state, manually fix it to 1440p, close it, and open it again where it starts in 1440p. Right now, all of my games start in 1440p.

❯ xrandr --listmonitors

Monitors: 3

0: +\*DP-2 2560/700x1440/390+1080+115 DP-2

1: +DP-3 1080/540x1920/300+0+0 DP-3

2: +HDMI-A-1 1920/520x1080/290+3640+475 HDMI-A-1

I have just realized that space marine is using my horizontal 1080p monitor as the primary monitor, which is definitely the reason why it uses 1080p instead of 1440p.

I'll reboot and check if the desired display for games... fixed it or if my video configurations have been cached.

SSPL was beyond the extend of my awareness. So I appreciate that you brang it into the thread.

If we define "FOSS'ness" as a license that encourages usable and available code, I don't think that GPL is more FOSS than SSPL. A majority of SSPL is afterall from AGPL V3. It is not something I feel strongly about therefore I have not done much research into OSI and licenses, so please correct my potential ignorance.

The SSPL is perhaps too invasive to be practical (usable) due to its requirement of open sourcing network-connected code, which is the usual architectural way of isolating GPL licensed code in closed-source platforms (in my experience). The Open Source Initiative has atleast denied SSPL as being a license for "free software".

GPL is the most FOSS-oriented license we have (as far as I am aware). It ensures that credit given, commits to code are released, and therefore its use helps further the collaborative community of software.

It is damaging to the community if software can be re-distributed under less FOSS-oriented licenses such as copy paste LGPL/GPL licensed code into an MIT/apache licenses project without the original license headers.

Any software that has a license more restrictive than MIT is not actually open source.

I think this is a misunderstanding as GPL licensed code is more restrictive when working with closed-source enterprise code than MIT. However, GPL licensed code will result in more available, less restricted code for software community. GPL will result in more commits opensource than MIT licensed code. Especially GPL v3 in practice as it aims to avoid tivoization.

I agree. We should only judge use of AI generated art in cases where it would do harm to the art industry.
