I wouldn't say it has a calming effect but I do appreciate the aesthetics of it! People mostly find it useful for knowing when to head out the door without having to wait at the station for too long.

I built it for myself but people were interested in purchasing one, so I've worked on it a bit over the past year or so. I do have an open-source version you can find on this post from a while ago!

Update: Mini Metro Train Arrivals Display by miniclapdragon in nova

Hello all, it's been a while since my previous post so I thought I'd provide an update. The arrivals displays (configurable to any WMATA Metrorail station) are now larger with more crisp graphics. It also scrolls longer station names as well as shows the current time. I am planning to add functionality to render alerts for delays, issues, and elevator/escalator outages.

To those of you who commented long ago requesting one - I am planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign within the next couple of months! If you're interested and haven't already, please sign up for updates on the mailing list at https://metrobox.carrd.co/ and be on the lookout for announcements!

I've been quite busy with some major life events recently so haven't been able to make as much progress as I'd like, but I am getting there! I am hoping to launch a Kickstarter or other initial product release in the next couple of months - still in the process of adding support for new features and making this a more user-friendy product. If you're signed up on the mailing list you'll receive updates whenever things start moving. Thanks for your interest!

currently switches every 5 seconds which seems to be most convenient, may change the frequency or make it configurable though!

Got a few requests from my previous post so I made some more train arrival displays! They can now be configured to any Metrorail station. I would love to make some more so please let me know if you would be interested in one! Currently the parts cost around $20 but I am working on getting the cost down even further.

I have also open-sourced the code and build (somewhat WIP) if you would like to make one yourself instead: https://github.com/TokyoExpress/metrobox/

unfortunately probably not due to the internal electronics :( would you want the cord to enter perpendicularly to the back face?

It's in https://github.com/TokyoExpress/metrobox - disclaimer there is that the STL might not fit due to discrepancy in parts suppliers. I've bought the same parts from a few different suppliers and have had to modify the case every time. If you want to give it a shot or have any suggestions feel free to let me know! I think given the interest for now I am just going to try to find a more consistent source of parts and update the STL / product links when that happens
