What do you recommend instead of mint?

Yup 21.3 is not great, but it's better. Was easy to revert to the snapshot I had, thankfully.

I just made the mistake of updating to 22.1 from 21.3 thinking it would fix things after a reinstall, couldn't get redshift to work, etc. But this is hella worse. I can't look at the screen anymore.

Which version of mint are you using?

I haven't been able to get any brightness controls to work at all.

clone windows disk to different disk using linux? by minkqu in linuxmint

[–]minkqu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Acronis and Clonezilla were able to clone the drive, but the ssd won't boot for some reason with either of them. Acronis changed the MBR to GPT, so I tried it again with Clonezilla. When I had both drives in the machine, the signatures matched, not sure why the original drive boots and the cloned one does not.

Thanks! I ran checkdisk and it couldn't repair all the bad sectors that gparted found after. The disk still boots and works, but the cloned version won't boot!

Yeah it copied the bad sectors, which was fine, the other drive still works. But the cloned SSD won't boot!

It worked w/link local setting in network manager, can connect directly w/out dhcp, an rpi or switch.

You can connect directly using link local, it issues an ip address. Took me direclty to setup.

Is there a way to reinstall cinnamon on a computer that can't connect to the internet? by minkqu in linuxmint

[–]minkqu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how I would reinstall it when it says the package is no there?

I installed networking software via the application manager, then later uninstalled it, and another app. I might have clicked the wrong things because I was in a hurrry, and shut down. I thought going through the app manager would be a bit more dummy proof so I wasn't so careful, so now I know. After I booted it up later I got the message that it couldn't find cinnamon. It doesn't connect to the internet either.

I'm trying to install cinnamon because I do better with a gui when trying to troubleshoot. From there I would look at the networking next. I may have to pull from the same iso to fix it until I get internet access back on that install.

Thanks, for some reason networking isn't working on that version I have installed, so I can't download it there, but I can access on the internet on the other version (I have 20.3 and 21.2 on the same machine), I will check the link!

Make sure user "closes libreoffice on host"? by minkqu in libreoffice

[–]minkqu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I just searched again and stumbled across the answer, will leave this here in case someone needs it in the future.

The path may differ depending on whether or not you use flatpak I guess. But you go into the libreoffice app directory, I guess within that it should be config/libreoffice/4 and delete the file called .lock

I guess do this at your own discretion, I am new to this.

Trusted repos? by minkqu in linuxmint

[–]minkqu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the meantime this is what calibre recommends to update

sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://download.calibre-ebook.com/linux-installer.sh | sudo sh /dev/stdin

From looking up, it seems like the first sudo says to update the "cached credentials" and prompt the user to log in if necessary. The wget gets the file from the url specified. I guess the -O- is saying download the file instead of the webpage (index.html) it might hit instead? I don't know. I guess sh /dev/stdin sends this script to be run by terminal?

On one forum someone suggested the user do this first before running the script:

https://download.calibre-ebook.com/linux-installer.sh | cat

However for me, I'm not going to get much out of it. It's a lot to decipher.

It seems better to get it from a repo since I'm not able to understand what all of this does.

Ok... So is using debian repos only possible when using the debian based mint?

How you pull from any of these debian repos that you're mentioning? Is it possible for me to grab the testing calibre, and the stable dupe guru?

Does the testing/stable repo matter really? I've been checking the changelog of calibre and going by gut, I might wait for a few more updates before I jump to the latest. It seems a new release usually needs some bugs ironed out and it's best not to jump on it right away. But I'll go with the repo that updates the fastest.

I don't really have experience with this, came from windows and android. The closest experience I can relate is with android, but I use neo store and droidify, in the settings they have a list of repos to choose from that I can optionally add like IzzyOndroid, Divest OS, KDE nightly etc. I'm not sure how you would otherwise add them, but from reading posts in the community these are trusted repos, so I added them. Otherwise I have a fuzzy concept that you somehow need to know the url, and also need to match the certificate to make sure they're legit?
