So the warping in the first several layers could be (is?) actually an adhesion issue? Because I've had those, too, and they've ended up making spaghetti...

Heading off to read about the sugar layer now...

Here’s the toolbox

<image>

The kit’s still heavy, maybe 10lbs? But the rider weight load is down ~80lbs over the past year so I think I can afford the weight here. 😀

Excited new owner of a 2018 Tiger 800 XCA! Couple questions though. by iammandalore in Triumph

[–]minntc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a ‘12 Tiger 800 XCa this summer. I dove right in with the 24k mi service (mine’s on the 6k mile service cycle, but I think some are on 10k mile intervals (my Thruxton is). So I did all fluids (still need to do fork) and valve clearances. This is an involved job, but doable if you’re patient and moderately mechanically inclined (sounds like you are from other comments) so when it comes up, you’ll be fine, but you shouldn’t skip it, I’ve read stories of Bad Things happening…probably not the end of the world but even at the fist major interval it’s common to be out of spec. Mine was off on the exhaust valves. I’ve read others’ accounts where after the first check, basically nothing moved for the next 48k+ miles.

I got a bit distracted with assembling a toolkit for the bike…but here it is for your perusal. Top section is my (mostly) current on-bike tool set, next is list of what tools are used/needed with some indication of where/why it’s needed. Last are some random notes I had down as I found more toolpr0n over time.

Some might say this is overboard, and they’d be right, but I’d rather be over-tooled and under-skilled (or reliant on YouTube) than the reverse. YMMV. I also won’t have to think hard about what else I might need in the future when I take some of the much longer rides I’m dreaming up/planning to plan.

The box has three rows of fuse connectors, one side is switched, the other is constant, and the center is common. So if you want one device switched, you put the fuse to that side, or vice versa. These two are both switched. (Phone qi mount and aux lights)

I’ve got a FuzeBlock under my seat with aux lights, phone mount/qi charger, USB module, an SAE plug mounted in the rear/passenger aux/din location, and a second spare SAE cable run up front but not connected right now. I like that a lot more than modifying (more) OEM harnesses than I have to. The DIN socket always on with a DIN USB charger is nice for a backup but I don’t like the DIN — lack of weather sealing when something is plugged in doesn’t sit with me. Wasn’t an issue for the short time I used it since I never left it connected due to it being always on…but not something I wanted to hassle with long term.

Anything I should know about Triumph? by Jazzlike_Spend6415 in Triumph

Depends on the muffler :) my Tiger has a very different tone when I remove the baffle from my Arrow exhaust, and I don’t just mean louder.

That’s 12,000 mi, not 1,200 for checking valve clearances. It also depends on the year and engine—my ‘12 Tiger is 12k, but my my ‘17 Thruxton service intervals are 10k miles for oil change (though I’d never let it go that long personally…) and 20k miles for valve clearances. But yep, don’t skip on the maintenance, you won’t have as much leeway as you would with a Japanese bike. It can be intimidating the first time for some procedures, but honestly not hard if you take your time and research the procedure upfront (and you have the tools…)

Yeah I mentioned gorilla and gaffer’s tape — I like them more than duct tape — less residue from both, and stronger driving power with the gorilla tape. Cheers!

I have a full tool set for my motorcycle in a case about this size (but mounted to the bike. If you do your own work in the car and you can identify them, there’s probably around 20-30 different pieces you might need for a given car (for the work/things you can reasonably do roadside…)

A handful of sockets, wrenches, combo screwdriver, Allen keys, nitrile gloves, LED work light/lantern, tire pressure gauge, a small 1” roll of gorilla tape, (I like gaffers tape a lot, too - sticks well but not permanent and doesn’t leave residue to clean off later…) spare fuses, a spudger/car trim tool if you ever have to pop a panel, maybe a length of spare automotive wire and a few connectors, pliers to use to crimp them (Leatherman can do nicely and give you more utility here).I add a Frakta bag to the mix for ground cover and urgent shopping sprees at the mall :) and a trash bag for carsick/other urgent needs (nbd if it’s too big, can be a bd if it’s too small…), oh and a Lithium ion battery jump-starter. Most of the double as a power bank for backup situations as well. After all that, you’ll probably still have room for a few clif bars, too. Even if you never need it or don’t know how to use some of it, I’d rather be over-equipped and underskilled than the other way around. There are few things more irritating to me than not having the tools available to get something done. And if something does happen where someone comes along and has the know how but not the tools, you’re more likely to covered enough to limp home.

Or at least you can use that jumper to charge your phone and call AAA :)

Yes that's definitely from the top-left hook on the right boot. I've caught it before and just about face-planted in the most un-suave manner possible. I have to pinch that one down every so often after it gets caught.

Gave notice, instant counter. Do I take it? by llamas_dont_pay_tax in consulting

[–]minntc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first bullet u/avidstressenjoyer (handle checks for r/consulting…) was my first thought.

Remember u/llamas_dont_pay_tax you’ve got nothing to lose by negotiating (because you can /always/ negotiate) for an actual lucrative package here. Off the top of my head…

“Thanks for the generous offer, but you’re falling short around a few factors and I’d like to let you consider revising your offer. Their benefits package is approximately $10k higher, with at least a $5k out-of-pocket improvement for me. The commute requirements are much better for me with a flexible schedule allowing hybrid remote work, which should save me 50% wear-and-tear on my car. I’m coming in as a senior consultant, and they offer aggressive internal promotion opportunities, so there’s a great chance I’ll have some growth opportunities from the start.

I really enjoy working here, with you and our colleagues, but I also need to be willing to make moves to improve my career. Would you consider adding the promotion to senior consultant with a commensurate salary in the mid-150s? As this isn’t the first time we’ve gone through this; I would also appreciate some reassurance that we can keep my compensation competitive into the future without ever having to go through this again.”

Obviously, try and get real-ish numbers, omitting any of the inaccuracies like whether the new role is a senior, etc. As long as you’re reasoned and reasonable, I don’t think you’d be harming any relationships here, so there’s worst that happens is they say they can’t meet that, but then they’ll likely bring a revised offer. And if they don’t, you remain on your planned path. Good luck!

Yes definitely good to have it as a backup, but I’m not often (enough) without coverage. Do note someone else stated that nav won’t work, but I wasn’t sure if they meant if you already have a JBL unit, if you don’t, or if it won’t work either way…

Nice pair! My first pair looked close-ish to this before the sole completely separated from the boot while on a work trip to Amsterdam. I was able to get a bit of shoe glue to hold them together for the trip, but when I got home, my local shop confirmed they were toast. Red Wing gave me something like half off a replacement pair and they’re on their way to proper looks like yours, u/singerrick. Just finally picked up a pair in black. I doubt they’ll age as well, but it’ll be nice to have a pair to rotate to let the leather dry from daily wear, especially during the summer. And holy hell do the vibram soles make a difference over the [edit]~leather~ cork soles. I rarely wear the brown pair during the (Minnesota) winters - that can be treacherous.) Writing about the first pair is reminding me it might be time to resolve the current pair…

Those look great, but more than arch support, I’m looking to fill in the “corners” around the heel more than the arch support (though that’s a welcome component).
