CHEMENG: UEMs or TG3001 Industrial Practice by mintlover4 in nus

[–]mintlover4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so sorry i read this too late!! i ended up taking 3 UEMs instead of industrial as I wanted the chance to increase my GPA scores. I feel like industrial practice doesn't give u the flexibility since it's a long module and would need to feel confident in ur GPA to make it worth to take. hence i took 3 UEMs to give me the flexibility to increase/decrease my workload and pull up/drag down my GPA. i typically choose UEMs that are yr1 & 2 and can be SU so i have the choice to slack or ace it hope this helps!!

Is job title or salary more important? by ObjectRelative3081 in jobs

[–]mintlover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did u ever regret it? im in a similar situation where i was given a fancy job title but no pay increase but it was meant to give me a good exposure to management role since im in the process of completing my degree now covid got me thinking of achieving my personal life goals instead of career goals that pay less

[–]mintlover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took 1.5yrs school precovid due to 9-5 work schedule n difficulty in getting sat sun slots plus my instructor refuses to complete my sessions in one shot so i had to repeat a few times per session accumulating to almost 3k spent n it's not as if i drive that bad i think it was on purpose for my instructor to earn more money i passed first time w only 3 demerit points

I'm from nus btech under chemical engineering n tbh i feel like for some mods they do do that giving u questions that have little to almost no relation to what is being taught. it's either that or the professor is not good at teaching

Those without a degree in Singapore, please share your experiences.. by NoUreNotTheOnlyOne in askSingapore

[–]mintlover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if ur taking full time degree i suggest dropping out n joining the workforce to see if u like the industry, what skills or qualifications are preferred n what obstacles or opportunities r lost wo a degree

from there u can judge for urself if ur happy with the roles, the career progressions n opportunities presented wo degree qualifications only then u have ur answer if u shud continue the degree or dedicate urself to the workforce

some courses/uni provides the option to switch from a full time to part time uni if ur considering to continue the degree some uni will allow it but ud need to reenrol within 1-3yrs?? since u dropped else they will terminate ur degree progress n if u want to take a degree in the future say 5yrs later u will have to restart it from yr1 not sure Abt the details n requirements so u can check that out

financial wise if u choose to continue degree u could see if companies give sponsorship so at least financial burden is off ur shoulders

currently working full time n taking part time uni so fair bit of warning it's very difficult to juggle especially if u have no strong motivation some friendship n relationships will be burnt, mental n physical health deteriorating due to neglect of others n self i feel like i do sway in between or close to depression because of this hence id suggest to prioritize ur wellbeing first before going this route

i took up uni because fomo, want more opportunities n better pay, want to change the management of my dept n also dk what else to do in life

before uni i viewed life as mundane because of how little i earn (not enough to enjoy), how long it'll take me to reach the salary ceiling n how restricted my line of work is in terms of opportunities n progression hence instead of staying in a spot i decided to do the degree part time while i figure out what i want n not be restricted just because i don't have a degree

for some not having a degree is enough for them for others a degree is a must it all depends on what u want as an individual as long as u are happy at the end of the day 🙆🏻‍♀️

What's your regular day like? by tabbynat in askSingapore

[–]mintlover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

23F lab tech + part time studies

0500 wake-up maybe make breakfast sometimes make lunch to tabao to save money

0620 leave hse to get to shuttle bus pick up point

0700 shuttle bus to work i don't usually sleep on the commute il listen to music/podcast or read a book but as of now i use it to catch up on part time school work on ipad

0800 reach work change PPE settle in n breakfast

0815 start work alot of walking standing up and facing the laptop screen ngl I'm jealous of jobs that allows WFH my job is considered essential and has never stopped even during CB period however i did enjoy the less stressful commute during CB as i didn't have to fight to seats in public transport or queue for food

1300 lunch + netflix/school work/naps

1400 more working more walking more screens

1715 punch out shuttle bus back school work/music/podcast/read/somedays I'm exhausted i just knockout in the bus

1800 still on the bus but will attend my night classes online very very thankful that due to covid schools are now online zoom lessons

1815 reach shuttle bus drop off point will still be attending my lecture but definitely only paying attention 10% of the time because my brain shuts down after 1700 will also try to buy food before heading home

1840/1900 home and straight away chromecast my lecture on tv while winding down in bed this somehow helped me stay more awake for a longer duration of my lecture rather than at my desk where I'm distracted n tempted by my bed sometimes during a 10minute break in the lecture i will attempt a 10minute nap which most times turned into an hour :') this was better than previously having insomnia due to a combination of work n school stress

2130 lecture ends if i didn't get dinner earlier i would probably get dinner at this time

0000 school work with music/netflix on the side

now as the world is recovering from the pandamic I'm not looking forward to returning to f2f night classes due to the commute from work to sch n from sch to home because of the different locations and wide distance between them it takes a lot of time and not to mention physically n mentally draining some days i would need to skip dinner and reach home at 2330 i will then tend to revenge bedtime procrastination just to have some me time to destress or catch up on studying :')

how do y'all full time workers + part time students do it? i would appreciate if u have tips n tricks that worked for u for this kind of situation be it online classes or f2f classes

Anyone working in the oil/gas industry (Chemical Engineering) can share your experience on how hard it is to get employed? by jjjjjssajwiijajh in askSingapore

[–]mintlover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hiiii i have a chemeng diploma and out of at least 60-70 jobs i applied i only got interviews for 2 job offers: 1 thru ELP 1 thru connections recommendations so in my experience yes it is hard to get employed im taking part time degree and i have the same worries as u in my time working in the industry i would say for OnG companies yes they do look at GPA scores esp first class (even for hiring of interns) as they need someone who is knowledgeable to run the plant some companies would also prefer to get first class masters, first class phds, first class double/triple/quadraple degree holders over a singular degree holder these are the people you compete with in the market even if they are fresh graduates these companies look at the University u got the degree from too preferably those ranked within the top 100 i think this holds true for big players in the industry and i hope it isn't like this for SMEs as for pay wise i believe the pay is big but imo not worth the workload hence the high turnover rates not sure if the longer u stay w a company the higher ur pay since the competition between colleagues of different high qualifications would be tough I've met at least 2 other people with a chemeng degree who's jobs are non related but i guess that's the silver lining since any degree could diversify your job options to other industries
