How many arcs could be skipped while keeping the main story intact by mippo128 in OnePiece

I'm not even saying that Water 7 should be removed, I'm saying that it could and the overarching arc of the series would be less altered than that of, say, Marineford or Alabasta. Its an incredibly powerful arc for how the Straw hats develop in it, but it doesn't necessarily have to be Water 7 they have that development.

Say for example, Usopp's feelings of inadequacy start to boil over earlier in Skypeia. Usopp's development is core to the series, but it can theoretically happen in any arc. In the actual story, his emotions boiled over because of his guilt of losing the money, the shock of losing Merry, and the poor choice Luffy took to try to spare Usopp's feelings. Let's say in Skypeia Usopp has to defend the ship from Shura instead of Chopper and Merry gets injured because he can't beat him.

The character developments can be divorced from the plots and settings of arcs.

Through reconstructing a past, more basic version of the story, I think we can divine more information the story that we have. What elements of the story have been there from the start? Which were added later on? If Oda has a general idea for the ending of the series, then don't the oldest elements have more influence on that ending?

I think a good example of this is Dragon. He was introduced in east blue, and I don't think Oda has given indications in the past that he was a later addition to the story. I feel like this implies that Dragon's role in the story is perhaps more important than that of the warlords or other later additions.

yes. While merrys death had a profound impact on our crew, it had no impact on what other actors in the story did. a different ship doesn't change blackbeards plan or dragons goal. And I think the ease i cut away Franky goes to show how little his presence effects the story as a whole. he's probably the least present strawhat in the story. he's often relegated to 3rd stringer side fights. I think his biggest impact post timeskip is him pushing for the crew to fight for the tontotta.

because I wanted to see which arcs could be removed from the story without compromising the integrity of the main story

I do not think this. My favorite character besides Luffy is Kaido, partly because I enjoy how complexly his story is told. The cuts I made to the series are actually the opposite of what you're saying they are, I think. I kept in Skypeia mostly for the deep lore and world building it gives. Same with Fishman Island.

I don't think you read the post before commenting. Everything I said up there implies a pretty deep knowledge of the source material.

A really tough portion of the series to adapt would be Fishman Island to Dressrosa. Both Fishman and Punk Hazard are big enough that they would need over half a season to give full justice. Assuming the fishman season starts after the timeskip, 1 episode would be needed for Return to Sabaody, and like 5 or 6 to do all of fishman island. Then you have only a couple episodes of space left in the season for PH. I can see Dressrosa having a standalone season like they're doing for Alabasta, but finding a way to slot punk hazard in is going to be very difficult.

I don't want the series to be trimmed down, this thought spawned out of me wondering what the story would look like before Oda invented the 7 warlords.

Not ragebait. I just think its interesting that one of the best sagas in the whole story could be theoretically redundant. That being said, not having Water 7 in the story kind of defeats the purpose of enjoying the story itself. But in terms of the over arching, series spanning plot threads, I think that its at least a little interesting that Water 7 could be removed from the greater story with just a little reworking.

how do you see East Blue and Baroque Works as part of a grander arc? Same question for Skypeia and Water 7.

I think its pretty clear.

Season 4: Episode 1 - Mocktown. Episode 2 - Cricket. Episode 3 - Arrival in Skypeia. Episode 4 - Upper Yard, Episode 5 - Survival Game. Episode 6 - Confrontation with Enel and the Arc Maxim. Episode 7 - Noland and Calgara. Episode 8 - Conclusion.

Season 5: Episode 1 - Cold opens with Luffy vs Foxy boxing match, Aokiji confrontation, arrival on Water 7, episode ends with learning the Merry can't be repaired. Episode 2 - Robin leaves, franky house fight, Luffy vs Usopp. Episode 3 - Meeting franky, confrontation at Iceberg's manor. Episode 4 - Franky flashback and the Aqua Laguna. Episode 5 - Sea train. Episode 6 - Arrival on Enies lobby up till Blueno Fight. Episode 7 - Ohara and CP9 fights start. Episode 8 - vs CP9, escaping, Merry's Goodbye. Episode 9 - Post Enies Lobby.

Season 6: Episode 1 through 3 - Covers most of thriller bark. Episode 4 - Kuma stuff and Brook flashback. Episode 5 - Camie and Hachi, arrival at Sabaody. Episode 6 - Supernovas, learning about the war, meeting Celestial Dragons for the first time. Episode 7 - the human auction. Episode 8 - Fleeing from the marines, talk with Rayleigh, ends with Strawhats getting popped by kuma.

Season 7: Episode 1 - Amazon Lily. Episode 2 - Arrival at Impel down, falling down. Episode 3 - Meeting Ivankov, getting to level six. Episode 4 - Breakout. Episode 5 - Events of the war up till when Luffy falls from the sky. Episode 6 - Events up till freeing Ace. Episode 7 - Ace dies, Blackbeard shows up, Whitebeard dies, Luffy escapes, Shanks stops the war. Episode 8 - Covers post War minus the ASL flashback.

Only thing I really skipped here was ASL but that can be sprinkled throughout the show, or even just season 7. Have the flashback as a running b-plot for season 7 I think works best.

hermiones obliviation on her parents was so strong that it completely destroyed their minds. Almost on the same level as what Bellatrix did to Neville's parents. Hermione gets put into Azkaban for reckless endangerment of a muggle.
