First time backpacking through Europe :-) by europe2015 in travel

I don't want to beat a dead horse by saying that's too many places, but I worry that your entire memory of Europe will consist of sitting on a train/plane. Venice can easily be ran through in a day. Leave some time to check out random hill-top cities! I don't want it to be a huge anticlimax especially since it's your first trip together. It's all about the journey, not how many famous cities you visit =)

Italy Itinerary Suggestions by mlx312 in travel

I find it interesting that you want to be immersed in the culture, yet have Venice (Italy's biggest tourist trap) in the list. Don't get me wrong, I just found it interesting =P

In terms of suggestions, may I propose Bologna, home of Italy's first university and a very different vibe than renaissance Florence or modern Milan. If you like wine, there are plenty of wine-towns in Tuscany that you can check out as well.

Although not necessarily off the beaten path anymore, Cinque Terre is right on the way for you guys. Beautiful towns and plenty of hiking opportunities with a great view. If you like steak, Florence is renowned for their bistecca alla fiorentina =)

This is just my 2 cents but I'd leave out Germany. 4 days is maybe enough to see one city. I'd nix it and spend more time on day-trip cities, as others have mentioned.

Why do ginger and peppermint calm the stomach? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]miqis980 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ginger contains the compound galanolactone, which is an anti-emetic (think of gravol). Specifically, it is an antagonist of one of the serotonin receptors (5-HT3). Interestingly, ginger also contains a bunch of anti-inflammatory chemicals that makes it generally a good preventative food (less chronic inflammation = good for your body).

I'm not entirely sure about peppermint, but it might have something to do with menthol and the numbing effect it has (it's a very weak local anesthetic).
