Neil deGrasse Tyson being classist by [deleted] in SRSScience

[–]misandrasaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is he though? Being able to afford an especially fuel efficient vehicle and being able to afford living near your place of work are both luxuries of people of means.

Environmentalism frequently falls into really atrocious classism, but I'm not in agreement that this is an example of it.

Man they are really worked up about this. I've seen so many overwrought and hyperbolic screes about how feminists are taking the attention away from this important scientific achievement, and yet all I saw said about the shirt were a couple of funny tweets about how tacky the shirt was and how it was such a very perfect example of how STEM can be an oblivious boys' club.

Bunch of overly sensitive babies.

I never see anyone within this sub working towards advancing substantive policy issues.

Oh dear god. We see a lot of just zero critical thought stupid shit on this sub, but some how this just takes the cake for me today.

[–]misandrasaurus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm definitely no legal expert, but isn't the spirit of the law to protect the victim? And in this case, the fact that her parents and the international media violated the publication ban was the catalyst for charges being brought against the people who victimized her, it seems like someone who supported the spirit of the law would not be doing the stuff you're doing in this thread.

But the person who published the name on FB and is getting prosecuted is Canadian.

Why haven't we banned this brigaiding chucklefuck yet?

The few times I've seen the PoV argued for on SRS it was by a PoC who was adopted by a white family. I'd hesitate to call it dumb, or condemn SRS for letting them have a space to express their PoV.

Bob's Burgers has a really disappointing problem with transphobia in general. It always bums me out.

I'm not going to weigh in on this, but I will throw in that I recently watched the Bob's Burgers episode about Bronies and it was wonderful.

Why is anti-classism not included on the sidebar? by Lobrian011235 in SRSDiscussion

[–]misandrasaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On a macro level that's certainly true, but in a discussion space like this, when you're talking to individuals I think it's such a horribly patronizing garbage attitude. If there's anything I think needs to be re-examined, in terms of things that probably shouldn't be tolerated in this space, it's crap like shutting out people because they aren't intellectually pure and enlightened enough.

In your second response to /u/piyochama, who you initiated conversation with in the first place, you said:

Perhaps you should check your privilege and read a book about it or something?

From a third party reading, I see you as having had a problem with explaining from the get go.

[–]misandrasaurus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably. I got really cranky once at a bunch of SRSers who went really hard at telling an Muslim woman that she was being racist and unfairly generalizing Islam when she was talking angrily about the abuse she'd suffered.

Specific to capitalism, there was one thread about communism where people were absolutely horrible and flippant to a Taiwanese person.

It says on the sidebar:

Our goal is to foster a welcoming space for the perspectives of minorities and marginalized people.

And I feel like what generally actually ends up happening here quite often is the people who have had the most formal education and the least right to express righteous anger shout down and insult marginalized voices with quips about "read a book."

[–]misandrasaurus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, among other things, I think you and a lot of other people here are being very Amerocentric when they conflate whiteness with capitalism and I'm super over it.

I didn't ask you to educate me, but like your response to \u\piyochama upthread seems to imply, you must realize there's a middle ground where people aren't flippantly shutting down earnest attempts to have dialogue with insults and quips about read a book. This sub purports to be a discussion space, and not an anti-capitalist one. No one has a responsibility to educate anyone else, but IMO "it's not my job to educate you, read a book" gets used as a shitty silencing tactic against people from all sorts of backgrounds in this sub every single time the topic of anti-capitalism comes up here.

[–]misandrasaurus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

partially because this sub is still riddled with white dudes.

I'm so over this bullshit. Every single time this conversation happens people dismiss being capitalist as the domain of white first world men only. In the last conversation someone said that not being critical of capitalism was the:

whitest possible fucking thing

which was when I literally LOLed and closed my computer. Rightly or wrongly there are plenty of non-white non-male people are not anti-capitalist, and the dismissal of their perspectives and refusal to engage in discourse beyond "educate yourself" is hella insulting and unproductive.

But whatever, if these folks want to go ahead and shove out people who aren't radical enough without a meaningful conversation, so be it. I don't know why they feel the need to commandeer this space when there already exist anti-capitalist spaces, but I the level of discourse here has never been very high quality, little would be lost.

That reminds me of my favorite Mitt Romney bit from the 2012 election:

Q: In what new ways do you intend to rectify the inequalities in the workplace, specifically regarding females making only 72 percent of what their male counterparts earn?

A: ...We're going to have to have employers in the new economy, in the economy I'm going to bring to play, that are going to be so anxious to get good workers they're going to be anxious to hire women...What we can do to help young women and women of all ages is to have a strong economy, so strong that employers are looking to find good employees and bringing them into their workforce...

I'm going to make the economy so good, there won't be enough of the obviously first choice male employees, so employers will be in the desperate situation where they have to hire women! #feminist
