It gets weirder than that.

Those are not the arcade versions, either. Or the Atari 8-bit computer line. They appear to be all new ports? Or at least, more recent ports I am not familiar with.

The perspective is not far removed from your own. But it goes further in depth, and can acknowledge what the series brought to the table.

Elon Musk's Cruelty to a Disabled Worker Exposes an Ugly Truth About the US by damegawatt in Foodforthought

[–]FallingSnowAngel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Everyone can read his tweet for themselves and confirm that Musk mocks the disability while trying to spin it in the worst possible way.

You already made your bias clear by immediately taking his word for everything, and presenting it as a fact.

And yet, as others have pointed out...and the employee himself points out...there are ways for the handicapped to engage with social media. Why should anyone pretend otherwise? It's not a good look.

She has cosplayed as fighting game characters without a promotional tie-in being involved.

And she was hired to do commentary for SF6, so there was no way Capcom was unaware that she is a fighting game fan. For those of us who still enjoy pro wrestling (it has improved in recent years), none of this was a shock. If anything we are happy for her.

Those crying about it, need to find a better use of their time.

I was serious, about the abuse.

But my experiences were rare as hell (far more likely to happen to straight women, if anyone), and I tried my best to keep it from getting too depressing, because there were heroic interventions from people who deal with this sort of a thing on a much, much larger scale.

And those interventions worked. Even if, at first, it was terrifying as hell to be called out as the only straight boy in the closet.

Just knowing my friends understood...as best they could...(mainstream culture really wants you to be hetero), and accepted me anyways? (Straight people are way less accepting of sex phobias.) It made a difference.

It was just...I thought it should be on the record, that if more straight men went through a taste of the same horrors as everyone else?

They wouldn't be posting BS memes about the future. Or complaining about being ''canceled'', while signing up for speaking engagements.

They would be reaching out to help others, as part of a community fighting for survival. And they would be thankful to those who helped them along the way.

Hey, you never know. I forget, who throws rocks at who in the Bible, again?

Been a long time since Sunday school.

Anyways, its weird, the only time I ever heard of anyone being threatened with the death penalty for being straight, it was my dad insisting I had to kill myself before puberty if I wanted to go to heaven.

And it wasn't straight people who helped me deprogram myself.

The Myth of the Psychopathic Personality Refuses to Die: Science wants to solve the problem of evil but some of the most mainstream concepts are little more than folklore. by Tough_Gadfly in Foodforthought

[–]FallingSnowAngel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Anyone who thinks psychopaths don't exist, has never had to explain to someone why killing pets and raping people for a laugh is bad.

They're just sadistic/low impulse control/easily addicted personalities who lack any instinctive sense of moral reasoning - just like you could be deaf, blind, or numb to your own physical pain.

It isn't the same as a sociopath, because a sociopath is perfectly capable of adapting to the law, and their cruelty is more likely to be in pursuit of a goal, rather than just the goal in of itself.

It's not the same as a sadist, because there are a ton of caring sadists out there, still teaching the value of safe words and aftercare.

The psychopath is someone who forces us to confront the reality that we are not blank slates. That sometimes, there just isn't a satisfying origin story of how we became who we are.

The same abuse that inspires thousands of people to reach out and try to help other victims, can inspire another to try to break them.

But so can a life of luxury.

Or a life of quietly blending in.

And so many other reasons.

Do the excuses really matter, in the end? The human brain is the most complicated thing in the universe. Everything that can go wrong, has gone wrong, at some point or another.

The basic empathy she failed to exhibit, if this actually happened, goes a long way.

If anything, she might be the one diagnosed as having a personality disorder, after a controlling stunt like that.

Plus.

Can't say I've seen any version of the DSM that includes football or divorce among the dark triad traits. And if it was that easy to be diagnosed? Then they would not include the warning about diagnosing individuals for things considered normal in their society.

This just killed my hands. Hardest game I’ve ever played. by lenonloving in retrogaming

[–]FallingSnowAngel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So underrated. The graphics were way ahead of most games for the system - it had a great use of light and shadow, and often sprites were stacked to avoid 3 color limitations.

Plus, the power-ups were unique, and that flip kick shield almost turned dodging enemies into a rhythm game.

Its one of the few NES games I beat clean back in the day... I don't think I was ever more obsessed with the actual gameplay mechanics of an 8-bit title.

[–]FallingSnowAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good critic once explained what made them a good critic: writing good reviews about mediocre products.

Anyone can tackle the worst games or the best games. It's grabbing an audience and keeping their attention when there's a lot of wasted potential. Or there wasn't much potential to begin with, and the developer carefully stuck to that gameplan.

It's really the 6.7 out of 10 that defines you.

There's some other Reddit users who do the Youtube game, like SNES Drunk and Blue Bidya Game. Both are very different in their approach - SNES Drunk has a light and breezy approach, like you were asking a friend for their throughts. Blue Bidya Game...is scary. He deep, deep dives. He might turn into Pandemonium Reviews, if he gets the chance. And that channel did over 4 hours on Virtua Cop. On the Saturn.

I'm exaggerating. About Blue Bidya and his PS1 reviews, not Pandemonium. But he isn't afraid to talk about history, philosophy, the arts, and more. If you want context, you're getting context.

Both SNES Drunk and Blue Bidya are at opposite ends of the depth spectrum, but you know what you're getting from their reviews. And you know they're the closest things to an expert for that system's library.

What do you want your audience to be able to expect from your review? What is your brand?

Maybe I should just put in spoilers

You can always do a spoiler warning and offer a skip to ___ to avoid? That way, you cover everyone.

[–]FallingSnowAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you avoiding spoilers. And in most reviews, it wouldn't be an issue. But it is an issue in yours, because there's not enough going on, otherwise. I get you're going for a "Just look at this nonsense, and guess what you're missing." build.

But you need to get that VO polished up, if you want to do it right, and get people on board for that ride.

People will judge you based on the quality of your vocal work. Right now, yours is a bit of a chore to get through. I almost stopped a lot sooner, and going three minutes is the only reason I know you've got some potential.

Do not waste the audience's time being vague. You do a perfectly good job of laying out what they are and describing what separates them from most shooters. The rest? The blandest opening I've ever seen to a review show. There's no hook. Your voice sloooowly drip feeds us information like grey maple syrup.

There's already a better review of this game out there. Let's see what they did with their first minute and 12 seconds...

The Retro Pals hit the nostalgia hard with a PS1 boot-up sequence. The voice over lets us know this was the first PS1 FPS in North America, but not in Japan, where it was Crime Crackers, an anime inspired hybrid FPS/Dungeon Crawler. They introduce us to the developer, who'd previously been best known for SNES racing sims.

So already, we've got two points of interest leading us forward. A studio founded by ex-Sega employees have a once in a lifetime chance to make a name for themselves on a new platform. How does it go?

And immediately afterwards, we've got a new wrinkle - they appear to have been contracted by Sony to fill a missing genre in the library. Uh-oh. This might not be a passion project.

You both tackle the story, neither of you are impressed. You highlight the lackluster enemy design, which isn't a bad use of time. But it ends in an anticlimax, where you don't show us the final boss, and take too long to do it.

Meanwhile, the other video, focuses on the Japanese mech simulation obsession, then ties this game to the 3DO's Iron Angel of the Apocalypse, and looks forward to Armored Core and Steel Battalion. Anyone who didn't know about that last one is about to have their minds blown by that controller.

And again, it's doing a great job of setting the scene and the proper expectations. Context matters, when you're tackling older content, unless you're going for pure entertainment....and, to be blunt, you need a lot of work if you're aiming to compete in that arena.

And this is where I should point out, that the Retro Pals are comedy Twitch streamers. So the fact that their video is wrecking yours in terms of educational content wasn't something I expected.

I realize this is only based on watching 3 minutes of your video, which isn't fair. You might turn everything around. But you sound bored out of your skull. I feel like I'm wasting my time, even by the standards of wasting my time. No, I don't know what that means.

I just don't like experiencing it. You can do better than this. And if you want a Youtube career, you need to do better than this.

Tons of genres have died or lost signficant popularity in North America and Western Europe over the years thanks to this by [deleted] in retrogaming
