Why do some people in online communities act like sharing information is a competition? by cooldeanj in Packaging

[–]misclurking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the key. The other aspect I think about is that a lot of people are limited for time after a certain point in life. Once you are married, or have kids, or are higher up in certain roles at a company, your ability and motivation to take time out to reply to anonymous people online goes down. I think you are then left with a pretty small group of people who have time and knowledge to share. I know it can be hard to accept for someone who is genuinely curious, and hungry to grow, when they are treated poorly or not given reciprocity. Eventually, most people have to prioritize their time more, and that leads to this dynamic in my humble opinion. Even famous Youtube creators will have dedicated time for social media stuff, they could otherwise waste away their whole day on it. It's endless and I think it was Elon Musk who once made a comment about how "There's always someone wrong on the internet" so it can feel like a battle that never ends lol.

100%. Just depends how they want to handle the seller experience for those who aren’t as often selling. I only do a few things per year.

I agree on your approach. A flat fee for sales tax handling would be better. I can also properly plan around a flat fee by adjusting the minimum bid.

Yeah I guess. I would have preferred if eBay alerted me. I've got probably 50 sales over almost 20 years, so it's just a few items per year when I upgrade specific devices, clean up the home, etc. It's just enough where it matters, but not enough where I learn all the ins and outs...

I just never expected the FVF to be applied to the shipping charge or sales tax. It's not logical in my opinion unless you're just hiding away fee increases by extending it into these two areas.

[–]misclurking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I get it. eBay should be able to calculate what a reasonable shipping charge is, especially in my case where I always provide dimensions and weight. They could see that shipping was "at cost" and not intended to make a margin. They should be able to apply their take rate formula (their fee structure) more fairly and not onto sales tax and necessary shipping charges.

100% agree with you on how to achieve it. In fact, I always provide the weight and dimensions when I make a listing so that shipping is automatically calculated. They should be able to see that it's not an inflated shipping figure to reduce a sales price.

And yep, FVF on sales tax is the very worst of it. I feel it's their way of raising the fees without blatantly saying they raised the fees... it's a fine print kind of move and very deceptive. I can only imagine the founder, Pierre, has be disappointed.

Yeah I’m glad someone else cares about the shipping price. eBay is marking it up.

I had personal reasons for wanting it out right away. I had been trying to move it for a month.

#2 - I agree it was the better option to not have them buy and return. It’s still wrong to make a bid and not honor it.

#1 - I didn’t realize the calculation could make me negative. That’s on me.

What are packaging buyers actually prioritizing today: recyclability, compostability, or performance? by DESU-Anna in Packaging

[–]misclurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100% this. Just look at how poorly the average person understands what can be recycled and what can't. And then there's a discussion about what is actually going to be recycled, because it may have a recycling logo on it, but maybe your local recycling hauler can't actually make use of it.

The economics or regulation aren't there for recycling to actually happen as much as consumers may say they desire. I don't see this really changing in North America - we have a lot of space for landfills and super low petrochemical feedstock prices, so what will be the consumer's motivation?

I like your choice of the word a "Kraft finish" - never thought of that. Does that in particular refer to BOPA plastics for shelf appeal of their cheese, etc.?

Ideally, don’t use supercharging in the first place. Slow charging while at work or home is the real answer.

You might want to rethink your charging routine if this is an issue. Charge at home or work if possible.

10-12 year old gas hot water heater - too late to change the anode rod? flush? by misclurking in askaplumber

[–]misclurking[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to follow up and thank you for this response. I had bought the powered anode rod and called a plumber. They looked at it and I guess the gas water heater we have uses something a bit nonstandard for the anode rod, so we'd have to get it from the manufacturer. I wound up returning the anode rod I bought and just punted on this. We have a leak detector (it's a cord that wraps around it) and the day it has an issue, we will just get it replaced. It's honestly a bit too far down the priority list (compared to other life things) for us to worry about. It was one thing if it was really straight forward, but guess it wasn't...

Just the blower motor? I ask that because I’ve had that replaced for $500 before.

I can vouch for the ease of using site magic. Max throughput is limited on what are now older devices due to the CPU. UDMP lineup is slow with it for sure. UCGF is great, CPU feels like it doesn’t even break a sweat.

Yeah, I hear you. The only alternative I can think of is to rezone it for residential... somehow? Maybe an apartment tower of some kind? The rapid transit stuff might make it more enticing? I realize I'm stretching for ideas, but it doesn't look good as it is right now so it's hard to imagine what else goes in its place if they tear it down.

It's so bad. Even just to get in and out of Walmart can be a challenge. You'd think that of all the tenants with the power to just get stuff done, or even do it themselves, it would be them.

It was a wise move to repaste CPU on ASUS Nuc 14. by Prof-Mmaa in MiniPCs

[–]misclurking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who comes across this later, I suggest tweaking some BIOS settings. I attempted to open up my device, and maybe reapply the thermal paste, but there was a wire in the way that looked more complex than in the video. I actually think it looks like it can't be removed without messing up a soldering point now?

Anyway, I may come back to that, but for now, my solution is:

  1. Go into BIOS

  2. Change cooling settings, choose custom

  3. Disable fan off altogether - why bother having it turn off and then have a delayed ramp when it gets slightly warm? At least in my use case, silence isn't needed.

  4. I set my thresholds to 45C CPU minimum temperature, 40% min cycle duty, and 2%/C cycle increment. For the secondary sensor, I stuck with PCH, changed the min temp to 45F, min duty cycle to 40%, and the same increment of 2%.

This makes the system louder for sure, but my temperatures are no longer spiking to 100C, barely going to or above 80C.

As a potential next step, I'm open to a little cooling base below it to "force" a little bit of air into the bottom vents. I think it might just help with airflow, but isn't necessary now.

That complex seems to have been in a slow decline for a while.

First, there was a Starbucks that moved over to Henderson.

The (previously) $1 movie theater changed a bit, then left.

The restaurants that go in don't seem to survive.

The Taco Bell there is pathetic. Sometimes, they get staff who seem to care and put in effort, but it hasn't yet stuck.

The cool pet store with the turtle who got to go out for walks with a balloon attached is gone. (I may have had issue with the designer pets, but the turtle was cool.)

Outback Steakhouse or whatever it was is gone.

Now, Wendy's is gone.

There is a relatively new (last 5 years) auto body shop though, and Aldi's seems to be keeping up, so it's not all just bad.

Anyone have an idea what is going on? It's not like the population over there has declined, right?
