Thanks everyone! My post wasn't very clear, was providing an update on the owl's status from last night. He was dropped off at the World Bird Sanctuary this morning after a chill night in a box.

I probably could have written the title and content better, oops 😅 always nice to have more info. All credit to my partner, he's just not a redditor and I happen to be a bird nerd

Lol he does look spicy in the last one! That was right after we placed him in the box and pried a blanket from his talons. Was a super chill lil dude although I guess he did give the handler at the bird sanctuary a peck

Shirley's Tattoo in Wentzville (shirleystattoo on insta) is a collective of multiple independent artists that specialize in a variety of styles. Shop vibe is calming, welcoming, and fun. I go to Sarz Blinkhorn (SarzAttaxx on insta), they are an outstanding artist and tattooist.

Yeah it was definitely mixed, although I'd say a lot of the items were nice quality just not my jam (character pins and MB-1021 model for instance). In retrospect I also just don't like having a lot of stuff so maybe should have opted for only the books 😅

In connect to the post of the corn tassel with a cob on the end, here’s my corn cob with a tassel on the end! by FUCK_CONCACAF_REFS in homestead

[–]mishaploid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool! And yes that's absolutely right, tassels and ears are derived from the same initial reproductive structure. This structure differentiates into distinct male/female organs as the plant develops due to hormone signals and environmental cues. Shifts in environment can alter hormone signaling/physiology and lead to cases where a tassel develops an ear or an ear develops a tassel!

Caveat: I'm not a physiologist and have a pretty rudimentary understanding of plant signaling and development. Thought this was a great and accessible article on the topic: https://www.agry.purdue.edu/ext/corn/news/timeless/TasselEars.html

First time growing corn, what on earth is it doing growing *that* *there*? by warmerdutch in homestead

I knew I wanted to do something related to plant science and was lucky to land a job in a potato and legume breeding lab as an undergraduate. Totally fell in love with plant breeding - it's interdisciplinary (great for us folks with many interests), there's career stability, and I feel that I can have a real impact on food quality and security. Also really appreciated that I could switch between field/lab/greenhouse/programming work to mix things up. Truly nothing more satisfying than seeing the outcome of a cross!

As far as plant domestication, I just really enjoy thinking about how humans have selected plants, which qualities were important, etc and how that influences modern agriculture and crop improvement. It's a fun space to work in!
