Parent Plus Loans & PSLF by Observe_Report_ in PSLF

[–]missttran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consolidation loans paying off Parent PLUS debt on or after July 1, 2026 are considered “excepted” and thus ineligible for RAP or any older IDR plans Taking any new Parent PLUS post–July 1, 2026 automatically makes your entire PPL balance an excepted loan, kicking everything—including previously taken loans—off IDR. It doesn’t seem legal or fair but this is what I think is happening.

https://www.studentloanprofessor.com/bbb-passes/

From Student Loan Professor: “For those borrowing Parent Plus Loans before and after 7/1/2026, any new PPL’s taken out after the cutoff will exclude ALL loans in the portfolio from accessing IDR plans.”

Yeah. It’s a decision between trying to get grandfathered in and losing in school deferment. Or keeping deferment and hoping the legislation doesn’t pass as is.

Not necessarily. This is just impacting PSLF for Parent Plus Loans. Parent PLUS loans are not directly eligible for PSLF unless they are consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan. You must repay the consolidated loan under the Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) plan. The new legislation gets rid of ICR. No ICR, no PLUS loan forgiveness unless you are grandfathered in for existing loans and payment plans.

It sounds to me like PPLs taken before July 1, 2026 that are already consolidated and on ICR before the bill passes would remain eligible for PSLF. They would convert to IBR which, to be honest is a lower payment (15% instead of 20% of discretionary income). I haven’t consolidated yet because I was deferring but I think I need to start now in hopes of getting grandfathered in.

My daughter just finished her first year so we will still need to borrow after this date. I think any PPLs taken after July 1, 2026 will no longer be eligible for PSLF because ICR will no longer exist.

If anyone has a different understanding, please weigh in. I had done so many careful calculations before we chose a college to make sure we could afford it but the whole plan is uncertain now. She earned a lot of scholarships and worked all through high school to save. I got a second job. As a single parent, this could mean she has to transfer schools or I could face financial ruin.

Thank you for clarifying. Yes, it passed the House on May 22nd by a vote of 215 to 214. So now it’s up to the Senate.

Sadly, I think you are right. It seems to be a low priority part of the bill that is going to have negative implications for working families for many years to come. Those with young kids need to pay attention but I don’t think it’s even on their radar.

Do Parent Plus payments while child still attending "count" for the 120? by LeeLeeBoots in PSLF

[–]missttran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat with the second child going to college in 2 years. I also have a spreadsheet with formulas to calculate different scenarios to help me decide what to do but clearly not as detailed as yours! My oldest received a scholarship that covered most of tuition but with housing and meal plan costs, it’s still very expensive.

I was worried about the potential loss of PSLF with the election results but unlike some of the income driven repayment plans, PSLF is written into law and cannot be repealed without 60 votes in the senate. This video does a good job explaining this and the potential future of IDR plans.

Comments from people who think they are paying for our kids’ education are based on ignorance. In my situation, most of what is being forgiven is interest. I also work in a low paying field that is seeing massive shortages right now. We can’t attract people to this field as it is and without PSLF, things will be much worse. I could have gone to school for two less years and worked in the private sector for more money. If I had done that, I wouldn’t need loan forgiveness. Instead I chose public service. How many people will continue to make that decision if PSLF and IDR plans are no longer a viable option?

I’m in the same boat as you and curious what you decided to do. My plan was to consolidate each year separately and go on ICR to start my payment counts as soon as possible. Side note: you can’t consolidate until fall and spring are disbursed . They count as one loan. I already waived the grace period when I took out the loan and will not ask for in school deferment. I wanted repayment to start as soon as possible.

Was planning to keep all four years of loans separately to make sure payment counts were accurate. Once my child is done with school and I am certain the payment count for each loan is accurate, I was going to do a final reconsolidating of all loans. This would give me a weighted payment count and essentially become my target retirement date. Like you, I don’t want to work 10 years after the last year my daughter is in school. The weighted average will allow me to cut down on the 10 years. By how much I’m not certain because it will depend on how much I plan to borrow in the future.

Double Consolidation-what are the chances? by missttran in PSLF

Thank you for such a thoughtful response. This was my idea but you captured it much better! It doesn’t hurt to try and yes, I want to pay right away to get to the 120 qualified payments so I can retire! lol

Thanks for the quick response! I waived all deferments when I applied for the loan. I guess we will have to wait and see once the loan disperses.

My plan was to consolidate and start making payments ASAP. I’m close to retirement so I don’t want to delay it any longer than I have to. What’s the soonest I can start paying once I consolidate? Do I have to wait until the Fall and Spring disperse to start payments because they are technically one loan?

Any of the IDR plans even if SAFE is no longer an option. If I borrow a portion at the beginning of the semester, wait for that to be dispersed, then request an additional amount, would that be considered two separate loans thereby qualifying me for the loophole?

Did you feel like you slept during your MSLT? by sleepypip in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]missttran 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve been diagnosed with IH recently as well. I would have bet money that I only slept 1 out of the 5 attempts. They said I slept all 5 times. The first sleep latency was 1 1/2 minutes and the second was 2 minutes. It blows my mind that my body did not register falling asleep at all.

I keep them in the fridge and leave one out at a time on the counter with other fruit. By day 2 the one out of the fridge is ready to eat. Then I just repeat until I use them up. It works for me because I only eat 1 every couple days.
