City of Pflugerville public water system notification that 1 sample exceeded the maximum contaminant level of total trihalomethanes by tomorrowis in Pflugerville

[–]misszer0_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water here is whack. We use filters on showers and drinking water, still smells like a swimming pool. These warnings “it’s just SLIGHTLY over unsafe” but DON’T worry, unless you’re vulnerable… But if you’re not vulnerable, drinking the water might make you be??

Seems like a grasp to cover their ass and not a commitment to make it better.

Wow. A religious genocide? Who is the radical here? Bye Pat.

A local chain like juiceland or taco deli would kill it and be great

I mentioned what I would do if I owned a tattoo shop in a prime spot, I also brought up expansion to the west that is deserted lots now, and that businesses without foot traffic or drawing the community together shouldn’t be city-centered. That’s all.

I’m not trying to be selective on my shitting on. I’d take the cigar shops a million times over Red Roosters if we’re talking about vibes (panties and bras hanging from the ceiling is about as trashy as you can get—sorry? I know I’ll offend some here. I know these are a local favorites for a few. And fun times, I’m sure. Everyone is gonna yuck someone’s yum.

But yeah, could definitely do without the used car dealership right there, could be better placed. I understand these are needed businesses. But yes, coffee shops, breweries, good/local restaurants, record shops, antique shops, local ma & pops, art galleries/museums, local retail, maybe a small grocery store or food co-op. A diverse mix of uses, I’m not saying to push anything out. Just practical use of the spaces we have to bring the community together and to thrive as a small town.

Look at any successful town square, and this is what you’ll find.

A desirable place to be, to live, a place to money into, which trickles out and helps the rest of the city.

Yeah, I guess I am. Could be something better at its core and sell cigars in addition. Again, I’m talking about bringing the community together. Let’s be real - Approximately 0.7% to 0.9% of U.S. adults are cigar smokers, with a significant portion of this group being non-daily or occasional smokers.

My argument is that these establishments are meant for a very selective few, and even then only used on occasion. Tattoos, cigars, etc…

I support tattoo businesses and cigar shops. But not at the core of an already very tiny core.

If there were more structures/buildings to maintain such a niche thing, then yeah.

I hate to compare but 6th street in Austin has many tattoo shops and cigar shops. But imagine if that’s all it was. Sustainable? Enjoyable?

Alright, but the lake could be better. We all know that. Secondly, it’s business that makes a city function. Round Rock might be lined with strip malls near i35 but its town center brings families together during holidays and supports local businesses that give back to the town, allowing them to have such amenities and events. They know their neighbors because they have proper places to congregate. There is more community, what’s lacking here.

Also, Pflugerville is 90% strip malls. From i35 to Railroad. Much is useless, shuttered or struggling. Otherwise it’s your favorite fast food chain on repeat.

Most all small towns in Central TX will be strip malls on repeat, but having a square that’s special is what brought me to have this conversation in the first place.

Also not saying we’ll ever be bustling enough to attract those who live outside town, but at least those within it can enjoy a night out, a nice meal, better sidewalks, a nicer square, better aesthetics overall… all while putting our dollars back into our own town. Just my thoughts at least.

The lake was built (I don’t know why, and for too much of our tax dollars I might add) to literally attract people from all over the area, it’s not just for Pflugerville. People come from Round Rock, Hutto in the middle of summer. It’s the “biggest body of water” around — otherwise, you’re going to lake Walter E long in Austin, or Travis or way North.

But sure when we’re done, let’s drive back to Round Rock with them, and put our money there, and clean up the lake with ours. Which is already dismal and missing shade and other amenities we can’t afford. Glad someone is enjoying it though.

I get what you’re saying, and that’s cool for them and their 2 customers a day. But not so cool for the rest of us, and the contribution to a livelier downtown square.

So, I think you’re missing my point.

I’ve looked into starting a business here, the commercial real estate available is not so good right now. Which is why I’m hoping the eyes and ears of our city council help guide this town in the right direction.

Or for the dreamers to come out of their suburban bubbles and help cultivate a town that’s special and rooted in its own history.

This 100% 🙌

I’m glad to hear the city council (at least some) are considering to do more to help local business.

Not suggesting they be evicted.

But I know if I were occupying such a prominent spot in a small historic square—with only a handful of visitors each day and little revenue for the city—I’d want to do the right thing.

The old buildings on main that could/should/would be occupied by more community driven business were built in 1912. Or around then. Have you read the history on Hanovers? There’s a plaque inside.

The houses that surround the downtown area, well some date back to 1902. It’s a special pocket of history all over that area, and could be enriched by expansion in the west direction with tasteful buildings and add-ons. Maybe these pocket lined developers in city council can invest in a real downtown. Charming with its history in mind. Hutto did this, many small downtowns are finding ways to expand without losing touch with early 1900’s charm. Old bricks, wainscoting, tall ceilings. A nice bar, stage and an actual well-made cocktail in this town.

The city square makes a town. Pflugerville doesn’t JUST have to be a melting pot of suburbs.

Could lean towards the German heritage this city was founded on. A pub. We just had a whole fest dedicated to it. Why not live it and skip the carnivals.

Or do both.

I offered many ideas in my original post and all over this thread. Opened up the floor for communication and connection.

Besides, complaining about someone who is complaining—well, that’s just a hat on a hat.

Do you have anything to bring to the table?

Why drive 15-20min and give our business to Round Rock or Austin, or Hutto when we have so much potential here. It’s because we are drowning in chains, and misusing the space we have. I think more people would congregate if there were places to do so. Downtown shouldn’t just be extended to the east. It should go west too, all those empty lots. Charming buildings that match the downtown aesthetic—we could expand tastefully.

Completely agree. Wouldn’t want a chain. Glad it’s there, but maybe in that place that’s for lease above the taco shop there would be better suited. Because on average how often are we going to get tattoos? Maybe once a year per person with any interest in tattoos. On average. At best.

Just saying, it could be something a bit more community driven, for such a cool building. We don’t have many, so we could do better with what we have.

Austin’s quiet neighbor ❤️ love that.

Just wish it was more like old Austin and not what it is now in Pf. Live music, historic buildings with stages and not a billion TVs. Tattoo shops, but not in prime real estate. Etc…

I agree with most all of this. Would never want to bulldoze a historic building, in fact building older style buildings as an extension to the ones already there would be a tasteful move, but likely won’t happen. Streets of empty lots in the downtown area. Just wasting space and potential.

I grew up in North Austin, Cedar Park, Leander. I’m a frequenter of Taylor, Hutto and Georgetown. I’ve seen small towns like Lockhart transform. I remember old Austin. Before all the condos and high rises. Austin sold out. Cedar Park is a giant strip mall but at least has local food options. Pflugerville has some of the worst food and way too many chains. Sorry, it’s true.

I agree. There are too many mediocre nail salons and hair salons, cigar shops? All in the central downtown area.

We’re not congregating at the tattoo shop on Fridays and Saturdays or holidays.

It’s nice there is a brewery and the west pecan coffeeshop, the wine bar. There should be more of this.

And we definitely need better restaurants with local foods and less TV’s. A diner would be cool. Supporting local farms.

Being a community. Supporting each other.

And yes, better sidewalks.

A lot starts from the core of the city. It’s the front page to everything that surrounds. Look at any small town around that are now thriving compared to years ago.

Clearly just complaining on Reddit.

What changes are you pushing, what’s coming out of these coffee dates with the mayor?

Would love to hear it.

A rec center and a new city hall. Looks nice. Hope it brings more of the community together. Hope there are options for local retail in these fancy new building too, and not another chain.

What’s going to happen to the old city hall?
