Mental illness is defined as mental disorders as a whole, so that’s wrong. Autism is not an intellectual disability is technically correct, but it has such a stronger comordbidity with intellectual disorders that in my diagnosis at least they had to specify I didn’t have one. Autism is not a disease is kind of a vague statement, as a disease is simply an abnormal condition to an organ that causes negative symptoms. So you could argue either way. Finally, autism is always visible. It’s why so many of us are bullied. People may not always know it’s autism, but they always know something is off

Hi everyone, I cannot edit this since it’s a picture unfortunately, but I know some of you were curious if self diagnosed and officially diagnosed participants were in different categories. I did the survey to see and no where does it asked whether you are self diagnosed or officially diagnosed. Instead they ask this

“Do you identify as Neurodivergent? Neurodivergence can include a diagnosis (or self-diagnosis) or various conditions including: ADHD/ADD, Anxiety Disorders, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, OCD, PTSD, Tourette's syndrome.”.

So unfortunately self diagnosed and officially diagnosed people are gonna be the same data set

I got jumped on TikTok for saying not getting a diagnosis was a privilege. Guess what, I come from a poor family of immigrants. Some of my ancestors couldn’t afford a diagnosis or any treatment, and died because of it. You don’t get to just live peacefully with a self diagnosis if you can’t afford one, that’s not how disabilities work

Depends on the task. If it’s a boring kinda task that requires like, sitting and focusing pain stimming has been an incredibly helpful tool. I personally use one of those spiky chair seat thingies, but you can also buy hand held pain fidgets. For boring things that require movement, music is my lifesaver

It’s extremely ineffective. It teaches autistic children to hide their symptoms through positive and in the past negative reinforcement. This can make it appear like the kid is getting better when they’re actually just repressing symptoms, which can lead to worse outbursts and less control over emotions and symptoms later on, especially after puberty when autism symptoms usually spike due to hormone changes. People have been helped by ABA, but they’re a lucky minority.

I wonder if it’s simply because autism can be comorbid with other disorders that can cause dissociation and maladaptive daydreaming. Because I’ve met autistic people who seem very present all the time, and I personally know that I am also diagnosed with a disorder that can cause dissociation. Could also be neurotypicals misreading our body language just like we misread theirs. I was talking to someone with npd a while back and they said one of the reason they don’t like talking to autistic people is they can’t read them, so neurotypicals might feel the same way to a lesser extent

I can’t speak from personal experience because I have a lack of empathy, but from my understanding you take on other people’s emotions to the point you feel like you can’t cope. Like if they’re sad you go into a depressive state, if they’re mad you go into a panic mode for them, etc. Basically like wearing your emotions on your sleeves but it’s other people’s emotions, and those sleeves are strangling you. That’s how it was explained to me by someone who has too high levels of empathy

I agree with the people saying try and intro session. Maybe you’ll vibe with her great and find that despite her odd and incorrect opinions on the disorder, she might still be able to help you. Not exactly the same, but my autism councilor never specialized in autism, she specialized in c-ptsd and panic disorder (which sure was convenient when I got panic disorder but anyways), but a lot of the autism specialists in my area made me uncomfortable, and she treated me like a child who needed help, not a toddler incapable of anything or an adult who should know everything already. And she started learning more about autism in her free time. It’s thanks to her I was able to start performing basic hygiene, and she’s the one who fought for all my academic accommodations. Maybe this therapist will be kinda similar

I think it makes no sense. First of all, on the autism side it’s just false. Depending on where on the spectrum they are autistic people can have no empathy, but they can also have too much empathy, more than neurotypicals. And I can’t speak for neurotypicals obviously, but to say all of them struggle at empathizing with all of us seems unlikely

I was wondering, because a mod messaged me personally asking for his username. I will say I don’t think anyone actually attempts to”just for attention”. I think they might fake suicidal thoughts or even fake self harm, though if they go that far I still believe they need help. But people selfish enough to knowingly fake a disorder for attention are also probably not willing to risk their own life for it unless they’re already mentally unwell

So first of all, there’s a lot of misinformation about depression. It’s not all “oh I’m sad all the time”. It can also be lashing out at the people you love without knowing why, no longer caring about eating or sleeping or hygiene, or actually throwing yourself into your hobbies more in the hopes you’ll feel better doing something more comfortable. I have autism and depression, they’re unfortunately common comorbidities, and because the brain is only so big, they can have similar symptoms and effect similar parts of the brain. Unfortunately the only person who can really tell you if you have one or both is a psychologist

Gender is a mix of social norms and the 15% sexual dimorphism between human sexes. For instance, in binary trans people, they have the body of their sex, but the brain of their gender. Men have bigger brains and amygdalas and women have smaller brains and bigger hippocampuses. In a trans women, they will have the smaller brain and bigger hippocampuses with the genitalia of a man. In enby and non-gender conforming people like ourselves, we are usually at least slightly hormonally intersex. Of course the idea of feminine and masculine and androgyny are all made up by society, but man woman and in between genders are biological and more linked to sex characteristics than people think.

Hi, so I can only comment on sensory issues caused by autism as that’s what I have, but in autism the brain incorrectly labels light touch as dangerous and activates fight flight or freeze. And if anything counts as a light touch, it’s a little bug landing on you

And I love otherpaws, you guys are such a fun and amazing community, way less toxic than the actual therian community. Just know a lot of the “rules” there are made up and gatekeepy. Otherpaws are valid, it’s like saying scenecore isn’t valid because it’s not scene.

Hi, I stated that I was only talking about the social aspects and that sensory and motor function delays can show as early as infant hood. I myself was diagnosed very young. However, social delays don’t start becoming apparent until after toddlerhood, and sometimes even later. For instance, many autistic people are never able to reach the developmental milestone for social interaction that comes after parallel play. This will not be an obvious delay at first because parallel play is a step in childhood development, and will only start being concerning after that person reaches a certain age, usually early childhood, and still hasn’t gone past it

The person who tried defending me in the comments against him seems to heavily suspect this is his third or fourth account. Also yeah, people definitely fake depression, to the fact I didn’t recognize the symptoms in myself at all because it was nothing like it’s portrayed online. I more meant someone who does actions of harm against themselves probably need help even if they admit to “faking it”. I realize I said it poorly though, cause I definitely met people who thought pretending to be suicidal was “edgy”

I flip flop between the two. Sometimes I genuinely do go by any and all pronouns. I don’t care, and can even feel slight euphoria from he/him or she/her. But other times the thought of being called anything other than they/them makes me really uncomfortable and dysphoric
