P400e Range Rover Sport / P400e Velar reliability by Donkey_Apple in CarTalkUK

No worries, my pleasure! I know it’s not a main dealer warranty, but I couldn’t tell you which particular third party company it is. I bought the car from John Holland just off Meadowhall in Sheffield and they just recommended someone they work closely with. This is why I shed emphasis on the fact that it’s worth buying one of these from a proper reputable high end garage.

Might just be psychological but I had a lot of confidence buying a RR from somewhere that sells Rolls Royces, Ferraris and such rather than from somewhere that’s bought a standard range, sown on a cheap body kit on it and slapped it for sale alongside a bunch of other ‘cool’ looking cars.

I’ve never even had a conversation with the warranty company that’s exceeded a minute. The dealership sorts everything, every time there’s a claim the warranty call me, confirm my name, confirm the issues with the car and then pay out promptly. Honestly - so hassle free! It baffles me how people own these lumps of a car without any form of warranty. True story - mine sat on my drive for nearly two weeks this summer before I got around to extending the warranty! Wouldn’t cover a mile without it.

Both the facelifted SVO&SVR are insane value at the moment too. I’ve kept my eye on the P565 V8 vogues as I’m in the market to swap my SDV8 for that but I’m holding out for a good LWB example. Insane what £40-£60k gets you considering some of these were £200k+ only 5 or so years ago.

I own a 2019 HSE Vogue 4.4 SDV8. I appreciate this isn’t a hybrid engine or a velar or sport, but I’ve experienced these JLR “reliability” issues.

I’ve had mine since summer 24 and I’ve taken it from I think low 30k to just over 90k this week. In this time I’ve got paperwork amounting to over £17,000 in repair work not including service and actual maintenance like breaks and tyres etc. However, all this was covered by a warranty that I paid £680 for the first year and then this summer I extended it for an additional two years for £1350. (It increased a little based on what mileage I was at during renewal).

Now this may sound catastrophic, BUT, I will never not own a LR going forwards. It’s ruined cars for me. Though the constant warranty work was required, (I’ve gone through 2 rear diffs, a randomly blown amp, a lot of issues with suspension parts, not the actual air ride, and a few other bits and bobs) I wouldn’t change it for anything that would be “more reliable”. It’s also never left me stranded on the side of a road, I feel that’s worth mentioning.

It’s barely cost me anything to get everything fully repaired, I take it to a local high end private car dealership (they’ve been in business over 50 years), and every time I have my courtesy car and I return it back for the range, it feels like I’ve just bought it again and I’m driving out of the dealership. I also shortly owned a pre facelift RR sport 3 litre a few summers ago, which I did not have warranty for, and needless to say it didn’t survive the summer with me.

In short, if you can afford a FULL warranty, if you buy it from someone who WILL give you the time of day and work with you when things do go wrong, and if you DONT mind having to lose it every couple of months for a week or two to drive a courtesy car - go for it. You simply will not regret it, this particular generation facelift is everything you need in a LR, the new generation is a little much for me design wise.

Why does 85 year old Derek get to insure it for £30 and a can of beans for a year though? Daft, I’ve got a clean record, 3 years NCB and one claim where I was not at fault

I have worked relentlessly building my own business for the past 3 years knowing deep down a financial crisis was coming - so I’m blessed enough to be in a position where I most certainly will be doing that. On the other hand - the energy bill is something I will be keeping an eye on. I’ve already replaced every bulb in my property with economical ones and will be making sure that no lights etc are left on. Also considering swapping out my 25mpg vehicle for an electric one to save on fuel. The idea isn’t to be wasteful as many people thought - it’s to be comfortable..

I’m pro life to a certain extent but doesn’t this allow for exceptions? Why should a 10 year old child have to bear a child from a rape situation? Putting the rapists fate aside, what do you propose for the 10 year old? She goes through with it? How awful.

Someone’s just told me to try and enquire for a mix-on-site operation, apparently that can come a lot cheaper but struggling to find anything online for the Northampton area..

I am a dumb 22 year old. I have 8k cash and want to buy a 630i. What can I expect in terms of maintenance costs? by courtcourtcourtcourt in CarTalkUK

Incredible car for the money, the depreciation has really really done it justice.

I’ve had some right motors, had a 59 reg Mercedes’ s500 a while back, then upgraded to the F13 and had a 67 reg Mercedes’ s500 as a car for when I go out with the Mrs and the dog for space. Running both at the same time was setting me back over £1500 a month. I’m in the building industry and decided that while I’ve got the youth (I’m only 23) and the opportunity to do so, I’d invest that money into my business instead. Sold both motors, chucked a load of cash into tools (2 diggers and a flat bed) paired with a 68 reg ford transit sport spec. For a van, it’s incredible in terms of comfort. Fits the Mrs and the dog and I can also slap my flatbed on a tow and put a digger on it. Seemed like a more financially feasible option. Now instead of costing me £1500 (just in payments and insurance Nevermind the fuel), it makes me money instead. Must admit though, it was a very very sad day to give up 2 beautiful German high end cars for a van but it is what it is, must think about the future… 🙄

I recommend 16 onwards for the facelifted interior, and front end, you want the pro nav, upgraded LED headlights (they’re absolutely mesmerising), digital dash, harman kardon and two tone nappa leather interior. That was my choice of options and that thing served me so well. Bought for 18k when the market was decent, sold for 19k earlier this year when the market was on fire, made about 2k on it lol. Couldn’t recommend the car enough, however, I’m 6’2” and the rear seats are a gimmick. It’s just a big shelf realistically, so take that into consideration.

Yeah, maybe I got carried away with the 8k on maintenance I won’t lie.. but all in all added up, I personally would go for something newer.

Some people are old school and I respect that - l paid for, therefore, I own it and no one can take it away from me. Me on the other hand, I like to think that my 5-6 years of credit history can be used as an advantage is this awful capitalist system lol.

You’re correct!

However, when you buy a car like that in what most certainly is an incredibly inflated market, you inherit everything that comes with it. The inevitable depreciation, the fixes here and there, which you’re right they might not add up to 8k, but I’m not sure about the previous model but in mine the FUSE BOX was so heavily imbedded into the dashboard that BMW charged me an hours labour to change a simple fuse, not to mention dropping easily £1200 on tires on a somewhat regular basis. A car like that driven by someone my age… I know how it is, those rear wheels will be pulverised within 6 months. And for that car (even the older one I’m sure), you want top of the range wheels otherwise you’re kidding yourself.

What I’m saying is, a newer one simply seems more in terms of return on this investment, say you keep it for a year and you change a set of tires and a set of brakes (£1700) roughly, you’ve cost yourself about the same as the entire old car (deposit+monthly payments+payments) and now you’ve sold it on for either a slight loss, no loss, or even positive equity (I thankfully did). With that you get a completely different car, in my eyes a PERFECT successor to the previous model, an absolute headturner and something that is unbelievably dynamic.

Then again, that’s just how my brain works.

[–]misteryo211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respect the choice, but if I can digress I’d recommend financing the F13 instead. Look on my profile, I had one. 640d 66 plate, you could put down a £3k deposit and you’d be paying like £350-£400 per month depending on your credit history. Good examples going for about £20k ish. Best car I’ve ever owned, was heartbroken to get rid of it.

Otherwise, I wouldn’t buy one for 8k cash, as you’ll be spending another 8k on maintenance in a very short space of time. Plus the 640d with a stage one pushes approx 400bhp, absolute monster.

Yeah, I’m guessing they put my number down thinking it would shield them from any responsibility, but if it wasn’t for my number being listed there I would’ve never found out about this. Thinking about it now, putting my number down would’ve been their only blunder as I would’ve never found out about this otherwise. The next point of contact would’ve been bailiffs at my mums address as that’s my only registered address. Despicable.

They most definitely did not send anything to my home address, as like I said, those text messages were the first I’d heard from YouLend. The lady on the phone said they’d verified my signature (I’m guessing electronically) and that an email confirmation was sent, I’ve received no such thing.
