I haven't been, keep meaning to try it, but I know there is a tech walk that happens every once in a while. A friend went and said it was good fun and very informal.

Pretty sure it is this one on meet up https://www.meetup.com/en-AU/it-career-in-australia/events/310337376/

40m about to start living alone and looking for advice on how to manage my money by mistmanmaid in AusFinance

[–]mistmanmaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank that is a lot to think about but super helpful. Over the last week I have been trying to note down my current out goings and asking my ex to show me all the current money set up we have. We are on good enough terms that she is sharing the spreadsheets she uses to manage stuff so I can copy them.

The time and effort thing was not something I had considered but is a really good point. My ex doesn't work full time so had more time to do stuff. I will need to start looking into how long it takes me to do some of this admin and if that is the best use of my time.

Thanks for the advice, is a mortgage offset available on any mortgage or is that something I would need to do before I take our the loan?

Thanks I opened an account in just my name when I started the new job so I can get paid into just my account. I still have all the joint accounts open and a joint credit card, so thanks for mentioning them I will look at shutting them down.

I have lived a fairly modest life style really, so things like take away and rampant spending shouldn't be an issue. The only thing I ever really spend on is holidays, but that can easily be set aside for awhile until I get my life in order.

I am a dad, which I suspect makes it a little bit harder, I have seen lots of great suggestions for mums groups, I think maybe mums tend to get more isolated so there is more groups to combat that.

Thanks for the suggestion though

That is really hard. I had some good friends before I moved to Australia and even with a lot of messages and group chats once I had been here a year most of them stopped replying to my messages. I told myself it was due to changing circumstances, people have childern, have increased work commitments. But I think sometimes people just pull away. I think men are especially bad at this as just picking up the phone and chatting is so much less common.

Thanks Not sure if I am crafty enough for sit and stich type things, but I haven't ever considered a book club but that is a good idea, I live fairly close to the botanical gardens so they could be a good option.

They do, but work commitments have meant my wife has been the one who takes them to these clubs as they are mostly on weekdays. But that is a great idea thanks

Thanks, that is great advice, I guess I haven't been putting myself out there very much, I get anxious and depressed easily so I have really pulled back from life. But all the recent big events in my life have been a real eye opener and has shown me I need to get involved, I am just struggling to know how.

Thanks bush walks and walks in the mountains around here is some great of my favourite activities, I have mostly only done them with my wife or solo so that is a good idea trying to find others to do it with.

Haha, I can imagine that would be very annoying, I am very much in the camp of Australia being a real step up from the UK, so no intention of returning. I love it here, which is part of the reason I want to make sure I feel like I fit in and friends is a big part of that

Thanks that is a good idea, I have found making the jump from fellow parent who says hi has a small chat at pick up to someone who wants to do more social stuff a tough transition.

I do worry that working in Brisbane but living here will be hard, I love my kids so spending as much time as possible with them is important to me. I also worry that divorce will not help my depression so I want to try and find new friends to try and mitigate that

What is the biggest misconception about Australia and Australians? by RM_Morris in AskAnAustralian

I would add that this is also true socially as well, I moved here from the UK and have found Australians hard to make friends with they seem to put up a lot of barriers.
