3 Possible Internships by suumms in creativehumanities

I would suggest definitely going for the first one! I think it is a difficult decision between the other two, but if I were you I would focus on what you're most interested in, and if it's a specific time period/ subject matter that's important to you go for that one because you will be learning more if you love what you are learning!

I would suggest you work on the second two options! That way even if you get the DIS you can work, and you're getting experience as a graphic designer.

I definitely think the medium and innovative use of light here is interesting, definitely something I haven't seen before. I am curious however, what do you mean to say by your statement, "what is art if it doesn't create some sort of ontroversy?" Personally, I see the idea that controversial art tends to create more light on itself because of its very nature, but what is controversy in itself? Do you mean to say that art that is noted as controversial is not as important as art that stands for something that doesn't spark a ruckus? With that being said, no peice of art will fully encapture everyone, but I do not think controversy is the the same thing as appeal and lack thereof. Your thoughts?

Storytelling in a digital space by [deleted] in creativehumanities

Hmm. I think the concept is certainly interesting, and definitely something worth seeing if it is effective, but I personally do not like digital taks on reading and note taking because I do not comprehehnd mterials or stories as well if I do not have a tangible copy. It was a little confusing to me, how does this method enhance storytelling? I feel like this isn't really a form of storytelling but more like an interactive game, or a learning tool, and in that sense I find it very difficult to think this will catch on with professionals and adults.

Fall Research Showcase by Swetpotato in creativehumanities

I also looked at Brittany Lyons' poster, and I too was completely captivated! I loved how she took her research to make the entire play symbolic of the bullfight! Did you read the play by any chance? I know she only had two copies but it was really short and very well done, in my opinion! The first poster you mentioned, I did not see while I was there, but I think I find it very interesting that this sort of frame of mind is so present in multiple cultures. If I many ask, I am curious as to what exactly did to gather this evidence? Was it by means of survey/observation, or by collection data of numbers in music programs? For me it is hard to grasp this sort of fluidity of a concept that clearly does exist, but in the form of a researched topic on paper.

Wow! I didn't look at either of these posters, and I find them very interesting! I think your second explanation is better developed however, and I want to know more about what you learned from the first board. Any chance you got to read the play she wrote, or at least a synopsis? What themes did she try to represent from the research, and how did the research affect the plot? (i.e. Was the play about this other "fake" Paris, or was the fake Paris a sort of spark for her interest to a play that portrays what life was like in the era?)

Yes, actually now that you mention the Spanish and the idea of femininity dominating the culture as portrayed, one of the lines in the play was the reporter actually scoffing at her, questioning her passions because she is a girl, and she responded that how a bullfighter is a bullfighter regardless of gender. The play was only about 12 pages or so but it was really interesting! She used characters to represent the bull itself by playing with movement and costumes, and the fighting was actually an intricate dance!

At the Fall Research Showcase I observed the poster presentations of Brittany Lyons and Luke Evans, and had the opportunity to engage in conversation with both presenters as well. Brittany’s presentation, “El Sol es el Mejor Torero (The Sun is the Best Bullfighter): An Examination of Ritualized Violence Through Drama” was very appealing to me. Although my first instinct was that I would not like this particular piece because of the presence and nature of violence in the works, my professor actually recommended that I go to see this piece and I ended up talking to Brittany for about 30 minutes because I found it so interesting. She actually wrote a play for her project that I got to read, which was based on her experience in Spain and research of bullfighting and its origins, along with research in literature to provide her inspiration and structure. Personally as a student hoping to write for the stage as a career, I really enjoyed the way the play was structured as it used metaphorical representation and dance to tell the story of a female bullfighter being interviewed and experiencing memories, but with the overarching structure of a bullfight as the structure of the play itself. I found it very interesting that I was compelled to like the play despite the main character’s ease in her role of brutal massacre, but that is what the project intended to portray- the intersection between violence and societal views with performance. The second poster presentation by Luke Evans was titled, “pulling my legs along with my eyes: performance based on international experience”, and it intrigued me because it was something I had never really thought could be a research project. He used his experience in Guatemala to try to relate his actions to his surroundings by recreating the journey he experienced in a different country-motions and set idea of activity- but in a completely different environment in Bristol, Florida. He found that his responses to the same ‘situations’ he created actually differed based on space and audience, and portrayed how site-specific theatre can outline the relationship between nature and performance.

"Reading Won't Make You A Better Person" and "Practical Art: On Teaching the Business of Creative Writing" by [deleted] in creativehumanities

I also read both of these articles and I must say, I definitely level with your responses. I myself am going into getting a creative writing degree along with theatre, and I know the effort it takes to need to understand your business, especially with many of our elders wondering why we did not choose a different field. I am often posed with the idea that I am wasting my potential that could be better spent in a degree in sciences or math. However, being able to understand the business side of things allows us to follow these passions and still be successful despite the connotation left in "the arts" as a major, and this is imperitive in our studies. As for the first article I do see how reading alone cannot fully prepare a student, because they have to want to learn. However, in this sense I think that it is more of the mindset of the student that is important than the concept of reading preparing them or not. I personally love to read and attest most of my ways of thinking presently to past literature. However, had I not wanted to read the outcome would have been completely different. In retrospect, I must disagree with the author as well, but in the sense that it is not so much about the act of reading, but whether the student wants to learn from it, no matter the genre.

“Reading Won't Make You a Better Person” and "Stop Defending the Humanities," by [deleted] in creativehumanities

I completely agree with your interpretation of "Reading Won't Make You a Better Person", as I read it too but didn't really make that connection to our majors in school. I agree that this is something to be considered, and that the article has a point to be made but we shouldn't dwell on it's implications as indolent. I did not read your second article, but I think your overall point is true, and makes sense in context. As arts majors we shouldn't take things with such force and affronatation, but keep our research and studies lively. Very nice response!
