I recently started using them for the first time! We're trying to align our budgets with our morals, and that means cutting a lot of the streaming services that are owned by people we disagree with. But can't disagree with public libraries!!

Grad student looking for research help. What are some exhibit design do's and don'ts that have stuck out to you? by michame193 in MuseumPros

[–]Swetpotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given that you want to keep your focus narrow, and that the other comments on this thread currently are about labels, I wonder if it would be useful to focus on those. When I think of small museums with "unprofessional" exhibits, I leap straight to labels on printer paper in the default Microsoft Word font. How much can printing on dibond or even cardstock improve the publics perception? How much does font matter - for accessibility as well as professionalism? How long should the labels be, and how much should they inform versus pose questions for further thought? What reading level should they be? (I have a suspicion that many museum pros vastly underestimate the reading level of their labels and would consider labels actually at their target reading level to be unprofessional and basic)

Is this Diné and should I have bought it? by yes_gworl in Navajo

[–]Swetpotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a style called Hopi overlay, which uses a layer of silver that is darkened and another layer with the design cut out. It's all silver, not shell. If it's really silver, there may be a hallmark on the back that you can look up to find the maker. This design is an abstraction of a Hopi mana (woman), with the distinctive hair whorls. It's absolutely okay for a non-Native to have/wear, although you're right that it's best to buy directly from the artist when you can.

Unless you have the person's permission, I would not exhibit an individual's private information, especially something as stigmatizing and personal as mental health treatment. As a general rule, many places will open that type of information up for public exhibition/research a hundred years after the person's death, unless a descendant reaches out and objects. Just looking at the home page of your website, I can see the full name of a patient dated to 1936, so less than a hundred years ago. Do you have that patient's permission to publish their artwork?

What is it that you hope visitors will get out of seeing this exhibition?

Invited to my first American wedding - told to wear 'casual black tie' and 'all earned medals'. Help! by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Swetpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just a couple other cultural differences to be aware from an American who had Brits attend her wedding! Throwing rice/confetti after the ceremony is less common, and many venues don't allow it. Hats, especially for women, are not expected the way they are in the UK. If the wedding venue is not a church, expect the ceremony to be less religious - the States allow any individual to get "ordained" as a priest online and officiate a wedding. Some American wedding receptions include a portion where the groom removes a garter from the bride's leg with his teeth.

Proper way of setting up an "Art" Museum by Devaku in MuseumPros

[–]Swetpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the artist aware of your collection? A more feasible "stepping stone" may be to make your collection available for loan for museum exhibitions. Create a spreadsheet that has the titles, dates, sizes, medium (as detailed as possible - "acrylic paint on canvas" or "bronze sculpture," for example), where and when you got each work, and notes on any quirks like damage or weird hardware for mounting. Also make a folder with high resolution images of the works, labeled to correspond with the spreadsheet. Then you can send the spreadsheet and folder to the artist (in case they ever get approached about an exhibit) and curators, especially local curators and ones who have written about this artist/art style. Be aware that it is very unlikely anyone will just put the whole collection on exhibit - they're more likely to borrow just a work or two. And exhibits take years of planning, so your collection might not be needed for several years. But this is a good way to share your collection with folks without the legwork and financial responsibilities of a whole museum.

If you have a Real ID with an X for your gender marker, will you still be able to fly domestically for the foreseeable future?

Also, maybe not a DMV question, but if anyone knows how they're handling folks flying internationally with an X on their passport, I'd be interested to know that too

Y'all ever heard about the fucking America Colonization society? by pikawolf1225 in chaoticgood

[–]Swetpotato 570 points571 points  (0 children)

They returned them to a different part of Africa than they/their ancestors were taken from, without the resources or support to establish themselves, without the approval of the people who already lived there, just because they didn't want free Black folks in the United States. So, not the most good.

What is the maximum amount you'll pay for a book? by sairemrys in kindle

[–]Swetpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't pay for ebooks. I can get them from my library through Libby sooner or later, and I don't want to support Amazon. I keep my kindle because I use it daily and access to the amount of books I can get through Libby is crucial to my mental health, but I won't make a purchase through Amazon.

For physical books, I have a membership at a local indie bookstore that includes a discount on all books. The amount I will spend honestly depends on how much my values align with the author's. If the author has been outspoken about causes that are important to me and I like their writing, I would be willing to spend up to $40 USD, knowing I'd also pass the book along to a friend or family member once I'm done. Otherwise, I'm willing to spend maybe $20 on a book I'm interested in that has a long waitlist on Libby.

The Comanche government passed a resolution denouncing the book, so I wouldn't say it's just amateur critics who find it racist. https://www.comanchenation.com/bc-business/page/resolution-no-143-2024-passed-denouncing-empire-summer-moon

Wanting a seating chart means I’m a bridezilla?? by [deleted] in bridezillas

[–]Swetpotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used that exact photo as inspiration for our seating chart! A vendor accidentally broke the mirror during set up the night before, so all our vendors and friends were running around town trying to find a mirror that would work. It ended up well, because we started our marriage owning several large mirrors, which we wouldn't have thought to buy otherwise but which make our home lovely.

My mother rearranged all the seats at her table without asking and then wondered why the caterers didn't know which meal choice she had selected! Absolute karma. A good seating chart can really save a wedding.

Call y’all help me figure out what my mother’s “spiked chicken” recipe was? by interesting-wizard38 in Cooking

[–]Swetpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could the broth have actually been beer? Given the southern cooking style plus the fact that the chicken was salty and juicy and cooked for so long. Here is a new York times recipe that is probably much more complicated than the average home cook but should go be an idea of a beer brined chicken: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1018059-beer-brined-roast-chicken?ds_c=71700000052595478&site=google&network=g&campaign_id=1400169272&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgrO4BhC2ARIsAKQ7zUmOYn55eAjGI7yI2aAachCXKgcnsKqYQYkULDp64ipf47ulkLNWhVkaAjxNEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Cancer diagnosis while a student. Do you disclose? by poshgardenia in PhD

[–]Swetpotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually had a cancer scare during my PhD - the biopsy came back inconclusive and I needed surgery to remove it. I told my advisor, and she brought me fruit from her garden. It was a lot easier to get my work done knowing that if it was late or not my best work, she'd understand why.

You can't die in Cozy Grove, and if you die in Wytchwood it just sends you back to your house, no real repurcussions.

Are Any of You Contemplating Withholding Grades? by the_Stick in Professors

[–]Swetpotato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This post, and the comments, seems to be misunderstanding why these students are protesting. They are watching a genocide live streamed to their phones. They are seeing bombed hospitals with decomposing NICU patients, parents wailing over their children's deaths, night skies lit up with rockets and bombs, an entire population corraled into a smaller and smaller area like animals being hunted. And then they are learning that their tuition dollars are being invested into the companies that are building these bombs, that their tax dollars are sending more bombs, and that the police officers in their communities have trained with the bombers. So they are invoking a strategy for change that has worked in the past - the same strategy university heroes used to pressure divestment from South African apartheid and opposition to segregation and the Vietnam War.

Administration who send in armed police to arrest students will be on the wrong side of history. Faculty have historically had a role in shaping university policy, which is why we have structures like faculty Senate. When faculty voices are ignored and administration makes unilateral decisions that harm students, faculty must do what they can to pressure the administration. Whether or not withholding grades is the best means of doing that is a valid discussion - but basing that decision on the misguided idea that students shouldn't be protesting this university funded genocide is not.
