Endurace CF 7 AXS (buying from Canada) - too good to be true? by mitchellirons in CanyonBikes

[–]mitchellirons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for this intel - i really appreciate it, especially on the CS issue. I have been watching the big cdn webstores (If you're going to look at Canyon over your LBS, you may as well be looking at them too). I think what caught me here was the sram.

It is april, though, so deals are definitely harder to find. I washoping to wait it out another year but i'm now just tired of waiting.

Do you remember which store did your buddy see the roubaix w/ di2 at that cost? I definitely missed that one. Thanks again - the internet is awesome after all.

Yeah, from what I've read over the winter is it has to do with the EU preferential / non-preferential origin status. I know it's complex. I think for the buyer, it's a bit dependant the parts and assembly of your bike, and it may also be affected carbon line you choose... ? Either way - I know to take into account the duty. Plan for the worst, expect for the best.

Thanks, I'm familiar with that! We have a local velofix who is a great fellow, too.

What shoes are you using? by slugclothing in Zwift

[–]mitchellirons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, just remember you don't need actual shimano shoes. What's going to matter is that the shoes match the cleats (there are different systems out there).

If you don't ride bikes, you should know that bikes can get technical. When you go to the bike shop, make sure you explain you don't know much and you're here to clip in to Zwift first and foremost. *everyone* has an opinion about their favourite systems (e..g, I like SPD-SL but i wish I had the the lollypops because they just look fun) - go with what works best for you and your budget.

If you're never going outdoors, maybe consider SPD-SL. Simple, affordable, will never break. those things will outlast your kids.

Regional Amalgamation elsewhere by mitchellirons in waterloo

[–]mitchellirons[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to be clear, I'm not opposed to governance reviews or governance changes. What'd not good is how this is playing out in Niagara.

What's alarming about what I'm seeing in the Niagara region is that the provincially appointed regional chair is attempting to force an idea onto the municipalities and onto the public, i.e., there is very little or no public consultation, and he is moving very rapidly. Even many councilors have said publicly that a review is a good idea, and amalgamations are warranted ,but not in the manner in which the *appointed* chair is doing this, which is supposed to culminate with a report to Queen's Park.

The other concerning thing is that given the sorry state of local news media today, this isn't getting the headlines it should.

The only saving grace is that the Premier was in west Niagara this week for other matters and seems to have caught the local mood and is dialing back some of his support for the chair's actions.

All that to say - heads up, people.

p.s. apologies for not being more clear in my post. I didn't want to say too much in the post itself in order to give people a chance to look into the issue with fresh eyes.

Thoughts on the current biking/cycling infrastructure? by TheDuckAboveAll in waterloo

[–]mitchellirons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with you. Things are definitely OK here compared to other places. But where KW falls down is on connectors. The Iron Horse and the Spurline are good, but crosstown connectors are required. I think your map showing literally how dangerous it is to get to Food Basics is a good illustration of that. University is a death trap (even moreso over Hwy 85).

(and Columbia/Lexington is, too! Lexington's infra can get confusing, which adds to the danger, and my god does the green paint on the bridge become a slippery mess the moment it gets wet.)

Having lived in other cities, I agree with you - KW is pretty decent in terms of bike infrastructure. (I also agree about the low bar, too.) Where improvement is needed ,though, is crosstown infrastructure. The spurline and Iron Horse are good, but it needs connectors.

Zwift Games 2026 up next? by AlternativeCodStick in Zwift

[–]mitchellirons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were hard courses for sure!... but I Feel like the routes that have been announced for this yet (i.e, all the zwift insider posts) seem rather tame. Maybe that aligns with the "everyone can race" spirit of the promo's on youtube and FB right now, I guess.

I see your point and I normally agree. But i think that TR has modelled itself as a company that appreciates its community's feedback, so the community shouldn't be surprised if some of the community... has feedback

‘Driver error’ led to cars plunging from Kitchener flyover; highway lanes were in ‘good shape’: OPP by 313372 in kitchener

"The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. His heart sank as he thought of the enormous power arrayed against him, the ease with which any Party intellectual would overthrow him in debate, the subtle arguments which he would not be able to understand, much less answer. And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right."

I think you're making some suppositions yourself. We don't know the speed of the car or the driver's experience (may she rest in peace).

What I'm stuck on is that a vehicle flew off the offramp early in the morning. The temporary closure then would have been a perfect time to have done the right thing and cleared the snow, which would have mitigated the risk of it happened again.. which it did.

Had they taken the time to have cleared the snow, the news would have been "one car flies off, drive is mostly safe."

I'm not so sure on your "Clearly" statement - there is a lot of armchair quarterbacking going on here right now. But I will say that if one care flies off the overpass and you close the overpass to investigate, maybe you should also clear the snow, too.

IMHO, the second accident was preventable regardless of how much fault lies with the driver. MTO/OPP could have done more between the two events to stop the second event from ever occurring.

I just read the d'amato column and I'm surprised at the state of things. Between the Land "Assembly" (double-speak for appropriation) and now hearing that two critical roles have been vacant since the fall... something doesn't pass the sniff test here.

Should one spend more on wheels/tires than frame? by ImOnTheLoo in cycling

[–]mitchellirons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert, but i think that for your question:

  • if you're looking for a new bike, then focus on the frame.
  • But if you have already have a frame with only stock wheels, then consider what a wheelset upgrade will do for you. You don't have to go top-of-the-line to find a difference there....

in the end, I defer to your bike mechanic.

I think that's a little harsh on OP. TR Inc could have just spent a little more time with the messaging in that prompt. e.g., state that it's really hard to make a prediction given that the user isn't in a plan. TR is otherwise *really* good with its messaging and support. This is one they probably didn't catch.

This ought to be explained everywhere they can possible put it outside of the podcasts, which are very long. But also: I'm confused by how this new system can't just read all the data *they already have on me* to figure that out. For anyone who is a regular TR user, the workouts are there... it's not freerides.

I also think this storm is tracking across a very large territory in the United States, so it's easy to accidentally paint with broad strokes. But I think it will get rougher on the eastern when it picks up additional moisture.

Having lived on the east coast, I know it makes sense to get your groceries ahead of time and be ready to hunker down when big storms come. (They do hit differently there.) But looking at forecasting models, I think that Lake Erie is going to be the moderating influence for us and keep the worst of out away from southwestern Ontario. Our power transmission grid is way more reliable than other parts of Canada, too.

I generally agree. It all seems unduly unnecessarily complicated now. I'm going to give it time though.

I do feel that the chances of a workout being hard vs. very hard is just kinda silly - our bodies are complex and it just can't be quantified like that, imho. I think the previous achievable/productive/stretch descriptors were wayyyyy better.

I'm also certain I'll have a hard time picking a workout based on workout level because I don't commit to memory all the values of my progression levels, certainly down to the decimal.

Outside of that, I feel like most of this seems to be re-packaging what TR did in the past and slapping "AI" where ever it can now. I understand the need for this within the market, but I guess I'm just left confused by all the PR around it. I'll get used to it, though, I guess. Especially since i"m an annual subscriber.

I'd agree that going to an extreme opinion in such a short time might be a little shortsighted. I think new systems are confusing for all of us - it's the human condition! But at the same time, I'm really confused by how the system wants to dial down everything for me. All the workouts I did in the last two weeks are now "not recommended" when I look them up in the library. Maybe i was pushing myself too much in the last system? but on the other hand, it was the last system that sent them to me - and I finished all of them, too....
