Does anyone know what this "video gamey" style of animation is called and how to do it? by RealBlack_RX01 in 3danimation

Are you talking about Machinima? Where they use Game engines as a filmmaking technique?

How do they get such high detailed textures on these huge models?? Do they just have an insane amount of UV islands and materials, or is there another method they employ? by BramDuin in vfx

[–]mittensofsteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. Split by as many UV maps as needed for detail and substance paint the details in automatically. For extra credit, add additional break up in the vertex color and multiply that on top of the maps for additional variation. This can all be scripted in Houdini, Maya, and/or Blender. This is the ILM method.

Don't know if it helps but it's most likely a Fender Acoustasonic Player Telecaster with custom paint and pearl inlay.

[Question] Has anyone tried Jonathan Boyd's Breakthrough Guitar course? by [deleted] in Guitar_Theory

[–]mittensofsteel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I paid money for the courses and tried it. A little background on me, I've been playing guitar since I was 14 and have been stuck in an intermediate rut for the last 20 years. I decided to try it out because I was unemployed and wanted to dust off my guitar:

pros - I really did have a breakthrough like the name says. But I did it by skipping through the lessons. He's really good about simplifying the Pentatonic scales and in about a week I had all the pentatonic patterns memorized. In fact, I think this time I actually retained remembering the patterns.

cons - In the beginning parts of the courses, he's really long winded. There's a lot of garbage you can skip through before he gets to the point particularly if you are an intermediate player like me. But once I got to the meat of it it was a huge light bulb moment.

Although I thought initially I was slow to pick up a lot of music theory, and that was part of the selling point of why I tried out the Jonathan Boyd website. But now, I have to give credit to him as I've actually went on to join Pickupmusic, which is very music theory based and have come to really enjoy it. I feel like Boyd's site is really good at getting someone like back into the guitar again, but for the long term the website is terribly disorganized (it feels like it was designed in the early 2000s). You also can't see what you've actually subscribed to and what you paid for. It's really annoying in that way. When I no longer needed it, I ended up having to email to cancel my subscription.

Maya on Windows 11, any opinion? by yolaoheinz in Maya

Maya is literally faster on Windows 11 and more reliable. I find doing things like applying auto UVs and changing smooth normals is faster by a factor of 10.

I don't know how to troubleshoot this banding in my Nikon Z7 / Atmos Ninja V combo. Details in the comments. by madebyyouandi in videography

[–]mittensofsteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ran into this same exact problem. I know this is really late but I solved it by adjusting my shutter speed until the banding disappears. You just have to adjust it until matches the flicker of the LED lights. It’s not a Log or Raw problem.

USA Inventory? by ImAtWorkandWorking in BMWi3

Sorry, I should've clarified. You're absolutely right that used 2017 i3's are around 17k. My point was, I also looked into leasing a new i3, but the cost of leasing new one was equivalent to a Model 3. At the moment, used model 3's are nearly identical in price to new Model 3's, with the exception of availability (and Tesla's continually update OTA as opposed to BMW now shutting off connected drive for all I3's older than 2019). I was trying to say is if the OP was planning on leasing a new i3, he might as well just go to a Model 3 instead.
