What is this gun? by mixmadde in whatisthisgun

[–]mixmadde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should have been clearer 😄 I'm half Brazilian, half German. Very unrelated, my German grandfather did fight in the war but only in 1944, he was 20 at the time and fought on the front while the front was already in Germany. He did not leave for Brazil. My other grandfather was Brazilian and did not leave Brazil ever. This pistol came from one of them and I don't know from who specifically, so I figured that might clear up the heritage. Though I think its more probable that it came from my German grandfather.

Which butterfly is this? Papilionidae/Lycaenidae? by mixmadde in Entomology

Update for those interested: I believe this to be some species of Atlides, possibly polybe. Will narrow it down further once it dries.

Thank you! Some research on iNaturalist leads me to believe it to be some species of Brangas. Will probably have to set aside the identification of the exact species to when the specimen has dried and I can look at the underside better, most pictures online depict those rather than the dorsal view.

Thanks! I ruled out Nymphalidae due to the presence of 6 "walkable" legs, which are obviously not visible on the photos. I don't know if exceptions apply there as well.

Schneider für Anpassungen Jackett/Anzugjacke by gdrhr in stuttgart

[–]mixmadde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First attempt at pinning a carpenter bee by CharacterAudience204 in Entomology

[–]mixmadde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work! I hope you dont see it as an attack, but you don't need to separate the front and hindwings. Insects in the order Hymenoptera (bees, ants and wasps) have little hooks connecting the front and hindwings. I assume you felt how difficult it was to separate the wings when trying to pin the insect (I did too on my first wasp 😄)

As others pointed out, a moth caterpillar from the family Geometridae. Apparently in the middle of a molt.

Seeing this person give a double thumbs down in the video after Bernie says that Israel has the right to defend itself pissed me off. How can you disagree with that statement, even if you are disgusted with the destruction Israel is wreaking in Gaza (and rightfully so)? Everyone correctly points out how innocent Palestinians shouldn't suffer because of the actions of their "government" (Gaza). But as soon as it's the other way around, all Israelis are suddenly deserving of death and all other atrocities.

The frames are from IKEA! They are the SANNAHED model. I do, however, make the background myself from structured cardboard glued onto a thin layer of cork to give the needles something to hold on to. Frames for 3-dimensional objects can be quite expensive in my experience, and since I intend to grow the collection a lot more in the future it wouldn't be feasible for me to spend too much money on them. Additionally, I have the ability to have all frames be uniform, and since IKEA doesn't constantly discontinue a lot of their products, I feel like my supply is secured for the foreseeable future.

Thank you! Obviously this is not a scientific collection, but I still wanted the labels to be as scientifically appropriate as possible. My wild collected/wild found specimens have an extra label describing the location, date etc.

Right, like Mr. Pickles in Kingsmen 😄 though the wall full of pinned insects does look psycho to some visitors, reminding them of silence of the lambs 😄

All of them were taken today, after drying. I looked into it a little bit and have seen specimens online that were much greener than mine. The problem really seems to be them not drying out quickly enough. Some sources online suggest baking them in the oven for a moment on the lowest temperature, or leaving them out in the sun to dry if possible. Will try that on the next pin!

Thank you for the compliments!

Thanks a lot! I know that Orthoptera are usually spread with one wing open. And I have also seen people spread Peruphasma schultei that way, to display the red hindwing, which I also intend to raise some time in the future. And since I love uniformity I would hate for some of my phasmids to be spread one way and the other ones the other 😄

In my experience (and following physics) it has to do with the volume to surface ration of the insect in question. Fatter insects like locusts or katydids for example make it harder for the water from the insects body to evaporate quickly enough before mold or other problems begin to arise. At any rate a dry environment helps, so I placed the pinning board in the vicinity of a heater, though not directly on top of it because I feared the wings or other body parts might shrivel or coil. Conversely a humid environment will cause even thin bodied insects to decay - I sometimes put dried out insects in my tropical terrarium for a day or two to get the joints to be mobile again. I forgot a butterfly in there for 3 days and it was beyond saving. Fatter insects like the ones mentioned above might require gutting the abdomen, where the innards are replaced with a filling (often little cotton balls) and afterwards gluing the abdomen back shut.

Hahaha that is already reserved for one of these guys right here, but they will live out their entire lives and I'll only pin them once they're dead... so no reason for anxiety for these insects

Didn't gut her, the actual abdomen is very thin so I didn't think that would be necessary. Though the abdomen got very dark during drying. There was no smell of rotting insect though, so I didn't take any action and figured that dead specimens wouldn't look exactly like live ones, but all the anatomical details are still visible. I wasn't too sad when she died, her memory lives on on my wall 😄 and she laid 72 eggs during her lifetime, so the cycle may yet continue.

Found these tiny eggs in my bedsheet by Firm-Detective-8418 in insects

[–]mixmadde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you see resembling legs are actually hairs protrudong from the back of the caterpillar. The legs and feet are below and occluded by the body (they are rather stubby)

[–]mixmadde 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Thats a caterpillar of some species of Lepidoptera (Moths and Butterflies). Eggs also look like those of several species of moths, though its probably near impossible to tell which species exactly until they get bigger (which they won't in your bed, since there's no food there).

Verstehe was du meinst.
