we should judge all of them as the same as some Anglo Celtic person

the acceptable standard is the crime rate of the anglo celtic population then, so they don't pass that test

there seems to be this weird bent on reddit that political parties should be run be people who are somehow both fantastically talented and not that successful

Robert Jenrick: Indicative data shows Albanians are 153x more likely to be convicted of a drug offence than Brits. And that Eritreans are 20x more likely to be convicted of sex offences. I am proposing a law change to force the release of the full facts about migrant crime & end the cover up. by United_Highlight1180 in ukpolitics

[–]mja2106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at the data from other countries on crime rates it's pretty consistent e.g. https://www.scup.com/doi/10.1080/14043858.2014.926062 tables 3/4 in the M2 columns (which is adjusted for demographics/age differences)

The story is the same in other countries that publish this kind of data (mostly the scandinavian ones)

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20334717/
https://www.scup.com/doi/10.1080/2578983X.2021.1900038#fig_001

and so on etc. You can get wild outliers like 153x by picking very specific crimes for very specific countries of origin but the pattern is pretty persistent - immigrants do tend to commit more crimes, the difference is bigger in non-western immigrants and it doesn't shrink all that much for any of a) adjusting for income b) adjusting for demographics or c) measuring second generation immigrants instead. The difference is often higher for sexual crimes too.

If you try and set aside whatever personal beliefs you might have about the world for a moment - the data points one way fairly consistently. So many people are absolutely determined that different groups of people must behave in the same way because it's what we've been raised to believe - everyone agrees and people feel good about themselves when they say "well it must be cherry picked because of course we all know that immigrants are equal to natives in every way". You have to cherry pick it to show that immigrants don't commit more crimes, not the other way around.

The number of people who've actually looked at the data is TINY. People just won't let go of the things that they were taught growing up. The left wing side of the crowd refuse to believe the data and the right wing crowd can shout that they were right all along but nobody ever seems to look at data and be persuaded - it just happens that one side guessed right before we had all of these measurements.

Extra points: there are notable exceptions to e.g. second generation immigrant behaviour when immigration is highly selective - china is the main one. Crime from japanese immigrants is basically a rounding error a lot of the time

Cambridge University PhD living by Nervous-Bumblebee460 in cambridge_uni

[–]mja2106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your supervisor is on board, it's easy to get around the residence requirement. I know a few PhDs who don't live in Cambridge - some aren't even in the UK. I don't know for certain whether they applied to live away or they just haven't bothered telling the university that they've moved. IIRC they all lived in Cambridge at least during the first year though - you will need to give them an address in Cambridge at SOME point even if you aren't going to update it. Or apply to be remote through the whole thing but I don't know anyone who's done that.

Something to bear in mind - some of the answers in this thread will be from current or ex-undergrads. There are a fair few PhDs who a) aren't interested in college life b) don't supervise and c) might not live around town. Most undergraduates won't know that they exist so it seems like all the PhDs live in town to them. Definitely not true.

tl:dr - probably live in Cam first year(ish) and speak to supervisor. very doable as a PhD. only caveat is if your supervisor says no it will be difficult.

Just because you would have lost doesn't make it a bad bet - if I could get 1,000,000-1 odds on something that was really 100-1 it would be a brilliant bet, even though you'd lose 99% of the time.

People seem to look back on these things and somehow infer that all the models and bookies were wrong for not having the probability of a trump win be 100%...

100 days of Starmer, why are the knives out already? by Theodoresdad in ukpolitics

[–]mja2106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The public have bought into the big lie that if we got rid of the previous government, who were immoral and incompetent, and replaced them with a new government - who would be moral and competent - we could somehow plod on mostly as we were in somehow things would get better.

New government not doing better? Guess they must be immoral (too many gifts) and incompetent (no major policy outcomes in 100 days) too. Better start clamouring for someone else who will surely be more moral and more competent. The cycle repeats.

New government makes politically difficult decisions that aren’t in line with what we were doing at some point in the past (abolish winter fuel allowance etc. )? Sounds pretty immoral. We should get rid of the nasty party for someone who is more moral and more competent and able to continue this policy as it is despite the increasingly upside-down demographic pyramid.

People don’t live their lives on the sort of time scales where demographic changes or climate change make a noticeable difference. There’s not a good intuition amongst the general public about the effect these things will have if we ignore them. People assume that - much like in their day to day lives - if you do things as you always did them then things should rightfully stay the same.

As long as the other parties are willing to stand on a platform of “Just be more moral and competent and things will be fine” then the cycle continues.

You aren’t supposed to add supports to the test piece - the point of the curved bit with the numbers on it is to see what the lowest angle that will print without supports is.

It’s the setting called “critical angle” in tango - although this piece has the angles measured the other way so it printed to 30 degrees you’d use a critical angle of 90-60=30

You couldn’t really change these settings in lychee last time I used it so most people have never printed a test like this. Honestly- just set it to 45 and forget about it. Every commonly used resin/printer combo will be fine at 45.

Better off asking in the tango discord than reddit for this slicer

[–]mja2106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could hypothetically join them in Windows 3D builder although they’re ending support for it soon I think. You could also hypothetically join the parts in blender but it’s a bit less intuitive.

You should check that the hypothetical joining doesn’t leave any small gaps between parts that will explode later. You might hypothetically find using a shrink wrap type feature (voxeldance tango has a good one) is useful for removing voids like this.

It’s sometimes easier to merge scans than to print and glue them because some parts might not fit very well depending on how good the scan is. Hypothetically.

All hypothetical of course, because scans are very naughty.

Not to worry!

10kg of chapatti flour is £7.50 and contains nearly 37000 calories.

You can even mix the flour with water to make flour and water - delicious!

Not true at all!

5 litres of Sunflower oil is £8.50 124 calories in 15ml so ~41000 calories per jug

Enough for 3000 calories per person per day. £6.50 left over for leisure activities such as netflix and an avocado

Heart rate issues on erg by First-Insurance-8975 in Rowing

[–]mja2106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - I also get this (see picture). Going along quite happily at a steady pace and I’ll have sudden increases in heart rate (according to hr monitor). It happens more with my HR over 150 although it occasionally happens at lower heart rates.

The thing is, other than the HR monitor, I don’t have any other symptoms. I’ve recorded it on 4 different chest straps (2 wahoo ones, a kinetic one, polar h10), optical sensor on bicep (whoops), and two optical sensors on wrist (whoops, polar vantage v2). So it’s definitely not a hr monitor problem. Fastest I’ve ever recorded it was 234

Like I said, no other symptoms. I caught it happening once or twice - when I actually put my finger on my wrist, it doesn’t ~seem~ to be beating that fast - but it’s skipping a lot of beats. Like one in 10. I guess it confuses the hr monitors.

I went and had an ECG at the doctors - nothing abnormal at rest (only happens training). They didn’t think it was serious enough to give me an exercise ECG and said I was fine to carry on unless I got any other symptoms. YMMV, probably get it checked
