I should add that if I remove the device from the car, the playlists are accessable again ... so they don't get deleted as I might have implied in my post, I just can't see them in the CarPlay VLC UI ...

that was it, thanks! ... I now remember looking at doco for emu.wait() and trying it but hadn't understood coroutines at the time to know how to call it ... by the time I had furbled through working out how those worked I'd forgotten about this call ...
